Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Can chemically burn skin if used on large areas
I've used this as a spot treatment in the past, undiluted (which is not recommended), and while the skin did dry out a bit, I never had any problems. The pimple cleared within a day or two used this way. However, last night I put tea tree oil on a cotton pad, with some water (apparently not enough to sufficiently dilute it), taped it onto my face with some medical tape, and went to sleep. I used a whole cotton pad because I had several pimples on one part of my face that I wanted to treat. I also happen to sleep on my left side, and the treatment was applied on the left side of my face, causing the tea tree oil-soaked pad to be really pressed into my skin as I slept. About an hour later, I woke up with a throbbing pain on my face. I removed the cotton pad and saw that my skin was all red underneath, and even had what looked like a few burn marks. I washed off the tea tree oil from the affected area with Cetaphil gentle cleanser and applied aloe vera gel to moisturize. Then I actually had to hold an ice pack to my face (with a paper towel over it; don't apply ice packs directly to the skin) for 30 minutes to make the pain go away. That's how much it hurt. Fortunately, I am female and can use makeup to cover up the redness, but men are not so lucky. Also, my pillow now has a tea tree oil stain and a strong smell that won't come out. I've tried spraying Febreze on it twice today and it isn't helping. Overall, I would recommend tea tree oil as a spot treatment only.

Sorry about your burn that horrible. But you cant dilute oil with water. Maybe next time try olive oil or coconut oil. Really anything you have will work.

Be Careful With This Product! I Got Burns!!!!

Pros:

Works a little (I guess based on my tea tree oil based products)
Feels refreshing
Easy to find and use!

Cons:

The smell could be a turnoff but I didn't mind it
Easy to damage your skin with it
Can cause burns and make skin raw and red

I had a bad breakout and I probably did the stupidest thing a person could do and decided to apply tea tree oil and expired aloe vera gel over night XD the catch? I just poured so much undiluted tea tree oil into the concoction and let's just say that I woke up with raw burns on my face :( it was my fault but even then my acne still remained! I do use a tea tree oil based cleanser and it's great! I just think that you have to be VERY careful and start small because you can't be sure how much of it your skin can handle! I used pure UNEXPIRED aloe vera gel to heal it and it was gone within a couple days! I'm still scared to try it agin but I think it would work well in some people Currently, I have cleared up my skin by washing my face morning and evening with a very gentle cleanser and no treatments or moisturizers at ALL. It is working great and it's day 3 and my skin is glowing and no new pimples are appearing! My skin is neither oily or dry! So just in case you overuse it, just use aloe vera gel and after it heals be gentle to your skin! If your worried about how it might react to your skin then use a cleanser or moisturizer with it! :) they are always safe and you can find them at Superstore and the body shop! Hope this helped! :D

Did not work for me

Pros:

May work a little bit

Cons:

did not do much
drying
expencive

I am 14 and last year I suffered with very light acne but this year it has gotten a lot worse. I used BP for a while but it dried out my skin too much so I wanted to try something more natural. I have been using tea tree oil for about 2 1/2 weeks and have seen little to no improvement.

Did not work for me personally

Cons:

Burns
Stings
Irritated my pimples and made them very cranky!

I have oily/sensitive skin and I tried this in my school years because my mother would have this lying around the house.. I used to use a Cotton-tip to apply it on my pimples and it really irritated them so much! It made them red and angry looking! I really DO NOT recommend this product for people with the same skin as me as. If you are looking for an organic oil for spot treatments I recommend Lavender oil.

natural

Pros:

helps with painful zits
natural
does not irritate skin

Cons:

very strong smell
kind of pricey but its worth it

I use tea tree oil as a spot treatment. It helps with painful pimples to reduce redness and swelling. I have oily skin and the tea tree oil dried up the breakouts that i used it on. I have also used this face wash from the body shop that has tea tree oil and it helps to control breakouts really well.

Pros:

The smell!
Dries up blackheads & pimples
Helps heal my acne
Cleanses my pores

Cons:

Stings on open wounds

I use this as a spot treatment when I'm battling a raging pimple and sometimes when I'm steaming my face. I add a few drops to a pot of water and boil it on the stove and hold my face above the pot so the steam hits my face. It's refreshing and really helps. It does burn your skin when applying all-over, like a spot treatment. ONLY SPOT TREAT WITH THIS PRODUCT!

Pros:

Dries up acne without irritating the rest of your skin
Diminishes the appearance of acne gradually
Doesn't irritate
Easy to apply
Works well overnight

Cons:

Slow to work // takes time
Doesn't do wonders - only speeds up healing process
Left me with very dark acne scars
Strong smell

Overall, I do use tea tree oil on a daily basis and will probably continue to do so. The results aren't TOO noticeable, though it has helped in reducing spots and has made my blemishes clear up quicker than usual. The thing I hate about it though, is that many pimples that I've applied this to left behind VERY dark scars that I'm afraid will take forever to remove.

Pros:

The only thing to ever make a difference to my skin!
Cheap
Natural
Very versatile

Cons:

Can't really think of any cons! Yes, it smells like...tea tree oil! ;)

This stuff is AMAZING! I started mixing a few drops of tea tree oil with Extra Virgin olive oil (to counteract the drying properties of the TTO), and massaging it on to my face as a treatment every evening. I also used the pure oil as a spot treatment over night, and was amazed with the results! Even huge papules would diminish significantly in a matter of hours! Combined with Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant this has really made a huge difference! I cleanse morning and evening with a really cheap, fragrance-free cleanser called Lactacyd (containing lactic acid, which ensures a low pH-value), which doesn't strip the skin of it's natural oils and maintains the skin's own the pH-value. Then I use the Daily Microfoliant (only in the evening), and then apply the mixture of EVOO and TTO (also in the evening). In the morning I apply the tea tree oil lotion from Body Shop, to control shine. Works like a charm for me! :)

Pros:

Natural, cheap, smell (some may differ), effective.

Cons:

Prefer for spot treatment- may be too oily to apply all over face. Can stain clothes.

Is a natural benzol peroxide in my opinion. I believe it works like a charm to heal those zits that have already came to the surface or those which are in the process of healing. I found that you're better off with benzol peroxide for those zits beneath the surface of the skin. It will make your skin turn a little red at first but it disappears after a few minutes. I think it also helps to remove the dead skin cells at a quicker pace. I wash my face with Aveeno acne soap, pat-dry and then apply pro-active toner, spot treat with tea tree oil and apply benzol peroxide to the rest of my face. I put foundation directly over tea tree oil- you do not need additional lotion. I really recommend this stuff.
