Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

-fast working

Cons:

-I guess the smell, but I kinda like it, it smells like eucalyptus.
-dries out skin

I have had bad cystic acne on my chin since I was about 15, I'm now 18, and havent found anything (other than expensive prescriptions) that would clear the break outs and keep them away. I then read about using tea tree oil and have been using it for about 3 days now and am amazed. The stuff totally dried up my pimples and they are now scabbed over and healing. I tried using a honey mask but I just found that it only kept the breakouts away it didn't heal the breakouts I already had. Once my face is healed I will go back to using the honey mask to keep them from coming back. I would not, however, recommend using tea tree oil all over your face as it does dry out skin. Only use it as a spot treatment.

Pros:

WORKS!

Cons:

Can really dry skin

One side of my face used to be really red, for some reason. I used to cover it up with makeup. Then I started using TTO, overnight, put some on a q-tip and rub on areas you want to clear. It works, the redness and weird texture on that cheek dissappeared! But the only thing is, sometimes you cant use it daily cuz it dries out and can cause flaking around certain areas.

Pros:

Works well for people with oily skin and with pustules (regular pimples). It can be very drying, esp. at 100% strength, if so, use a more diluted one (the Body Shop's one is 15% and smells less than any other I've tried). The drying aspects are great if you have oily skin.

Cons:

Not for you if you have truly dry skin. Warning: for me, it makes rosacea much worse! If you are getting worse, and you are not sure if you have rosacea, read about rosacea on this site and ask your doctor about it.

Good for "regular" acne characterized by pustules and with by oily skin. Too harsh and make rosacea worse. Rosacea requires different treatments. Sadly, you can have both acne and rosacea, esp. if you are older. If you do, or aren't sure what you have, see a dermatologist. Family practitioners are often unfamiliar with rasacea, despite how common it is.

Pros:

- This didn't make me break out any more than I normally do
- No redness or having my skin peeling when I used this treatment

Cons:

- I didn't necessarily break out more, but I had the feeling that my face was a lot oiler the next day. You get a nice refreshing feeling right away after using this product, but the following day, my face didn't feel that great.
- The smell is interesting. You get used to it after wearing the formula for a while
- Hard to find. I had to buy mine at the Body Shop.

Unless you're a big fan of natural remedies and would love to try something new, I suggest you not buy this product. I had to buy mine at the Body Shop for $9. I also tried the Body Shop Tea Tree Face Mask (bought on sale for $6, originally priced at $15). The tea tree mask is similar to the tea tree oil in the same way that it makes my skin feel more oily the next day. AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT. I suppose it doesn't hurt to try the product, I just never got the results that I expected I would. Maybe if I chose to use the product for more than a few weeks?

Pros:

A wide varitys of uses

Cons:

strong smell though I think it's ok

I've been using tea tree oil for many puposes over the last ten years. I've used it on infected wounds, against uranary tract syndrom, and are exspesially amazed by how good it works on mouth ulcers when aplied early, with first signs of break out. I use it pure on skin in some cases, but it is very important to avoid high doses. I think it works great on cyst on the back and on pustules on chin and nose. For some reasons, I don't know why, it has no good effect and might even worsen breakouts on my cheeks and forhead. But overall it is something of a small apotetechary and a must have for me.

Pros:

Clears skin and prevents future breakouts!

Cons:

Leaves skin dried out.

Love it. I use "amosphere (not atmosphere) tea tree oil facial wash", and use the "amosphere antibacterial facial stick" for problem spots. It's worked wonders considering I've even been prescribed stuff by the doc that didn't work. I've also been taking "DermaMed: for troubled skin" pills (one a day) along with the tea tree oil treatment. My face isn't as red as it once was from acne scars either. :) It cost me around 7$ for each amosphere product, and 30$ for the pills (these are optional though). Overall, VERY happy!

Pros:

Cons:

It worked for...about a day and then I began to break out. It smells, it stings and it has caused my face to become bumpy and red again.

It might work for some, but it won't work for others. Be aware of the fact.

Little to none

be sure your buying pure tea tree oil which comes only from an Australian tree "Melaleuca alternifolia" and can be found at " [link removed] "search for natria.A product that can be bought pre-mixed for use can be found at " [link removed] and search for tea tree oil.The Australian government sets the standard (AS 2782-1985) for tea tree oil quality at a minimum content of 30% terpinen-4-ol, and a maximum content of 15% 1,8-cineol can treat most skin conditions, dry scalp problems and canker sores. It should never be used without diluting and should not smell badly.A bad smell is of lower quality, may be rotten because of improper packaging or is from the Melaleuca family of trees but not the Austrailian alternifolia variety. If you buy it pure you can find mixing reciepes on [link removed] and at the bottom are other links for its use and how to properly mix.Rarity makes it a bit pricier at $10/oz.Mixing will go far.
