i went on dianette when i was 18 as my skin had just exploded with acne and it worked amazingly but i came off it last feb as i thought it was to blame for my bad moods, which in retrospect was down to stress and other things going on in my life. when i came off it my skin was worse then ever and this has made me feel worse than any of the moods i ever had with dianette and nothing else that i have used in the mean time has been any use for me. at 21 i do not want to be putting up with acne and for this reason i am going back on dianette. i am at the stage that i do not want to go out in public because of my skin. i dianette is not working for you then dont stay on it as i know it does not agree with some people but i have found it to work for me. x

GOT WORST BEFORE IT GOT BETTER - VERY HONEST REVIEW

So I wanted to write a review because I was really struggling to find a review that matched what I was going through whilst taking dianette. I'm 24 and have suffered with acne since my teens, I always knew it was hormonal but wanted to try everything first before I decided to take dianette. Here comes the honest part. My skin got extremely worst as soon as I started taking it, within the first few weeks it got super red and blotchy and I had these painful cystic spots everywhere, especially on my chin which I had never had before! It was just awful and I felt like I couldn't leave the house. This carried on for the first 4 months with no sign of getting better at all. I even considered coming off it. Anyways I am now on my fifth month and all of a sudden my skin is clearer than ever! I am still for some reason experiencing redness which almost looks like roscaea (especially when i exercise etc) I never use to get this before but I'd take that over acne any day. Anyways my skin felt like it improved over night but it definitely took a lot of patience and emotional pain. Its important to remember that this pill effects everyone differently but if like me you have tried everything else I would say give it a go as long as you are willing to experience the side effects and push through to at least 6 months to see if it can help you! I feel a lot more confident now and am hoping to stay on it for a bit longer whilst I am in my twenties. Have hope. :symbols_v1_2:

Hi there!

Have you tried other birth control than that? I'm on yaz and it is not helping yet.

What you doctor is saying about staying long term on dianette? Thank you!

Works with side effects
A while ago I had really severe acne so I went on dianette. It took a few months but it did clear up my skin totally. However, I also noticed a lot of weight gain resulting in stretch marks. As a result, I switched to a course of antibiotics which seemed to be working at first but now my skin has got really bad again. I have restarted taking dianette for a few days and have experienced mood swings however I am not sure if that is a result of my acne or the pill. I did not like taking dianette but I fear it is necessary if I want clear skin as nothing else has worked

Works but ....
I've had hormonal acne for 20 years . I started taking dianette aged 20 and it definitely helped my skin but I did still get spots . Every time I came off it my skin was worse than ever so I ended up back on it but it took longer to kick in each time . After the birth of my son when I was 29 my skin really flared up , I had cystic acne on my cheeks which was leaving pitted scars . I was getting an improvement after 6 months but was still really fed up so took 2 packets back to back and for the first time in 15 years I had no spots !. I carried on doing this until a couple of months ago and the worst I'd get was a spot on my chin every few weeks which cleared up with bp . I decided to do an experiment and see what happened if I went back to taking the pill 'normally' and last week I had a cystic spot on my cheek for the first time in years . I've done loads of research and opinion is divided on if it does any harm continuously running 2 packs back to back . The issue is that my doctor thinks when I'm 35 ( next year) I need to come off dianette. I am aware of the increased risk compared to other pills but to me it's worth it not to be depressed by acne . I know by my little experiment that I'm still acne prone so I'm starting to panic . That is where the but comes in because it's not something ( most ) doctors will agree to you taking until you truly 'grow out ' of acne . Personally I've had no side effects and getting acne does make me depressed, moody and irritable so feel better on it . I've had no weight gain , I weigh the same as I did when I was 20 !. It's a shame there's not a way for the manufacturers to lower the risks of dianette so it can be taken until it's no longer needed . After spending a fortune on getting rid of my acne scars I'm terrified of getting full blown cystic acne again.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne almost completely
Regulated my periods

Cons:

Didn't do anything else to my periods aside from regulating them, still very heavy (possibly heavier than when I didn't take it) and did not reduce my pain (which can be fairly severe) at all.
Made me feel very low/emotional some days

I would recommend this pill to anyone who is looking for an acne treatment and also needs to regulate their periods, however if, like me, you were also looking for something to reduce pain etc, then maybe Yasmin (which I have just changed to after taking diannette for 6 months) would be a better option. I had virtually no side effects aside from nausea the first week or so of taking it. It took 5 days after taking my last pill in the packet before I came on, but I've heard this is not unusual.

Pros:

Cleared my skin and more controlled periods. I also used Neutrogena Oil free Gel wash and azelaic acid for face.

Cons:

Breast tenderness and doesn't really help with period pains.

I suffered severe acne, couldn't find anything that worked. I started using NEUTROGENA oil-free gel wash which did dry up the oil on my skin, but still got breakouts, which left me with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation........:( so frustrating. Then my GP gave me DIANETTE (once every day) to treat acne from internally and AZELAIC ACID as a tropical cream to treat the acne as well as hyperpigmentation. I'm not sure, which was helping the acne most, but all 3 of these combined together works wonders! Trust me and try it, for me, I started seeing difference in 4 weeks. I know lots of you are so tired of trying OTC products and getting depressed when they don't work, which triggers more breakouts, instead of wasting money on expensive dermatology treatments, please try this! It REALLY WORKS! ask your GP for advice.

Pros:

Reduces oiliness of skin and hair and therefore for me decreases amount of new spots forming.

Cons:

Not a complete cure, bloating. Been on it so long im not sure what was the pill and what wasnt.

I was on dianette for nine years for acne and came off it twice for a couple of months to give my body a break. I went back on it about nine months ago so i could go on isotretinoin. Each time i've come off it i've noticed much greasier skin and hair. After completing a five month course of isotretinoin i decided that however scared i was to come off my security blanket-dianette, now was the time. I started getting spots again soon after coming off isotretinoin but decided to still come off dianette. I dont know whether its just my body settling down but ive been off dianette for two months now and my skin is awful!

Pros:

Cleared up spots wonderfully, skin less oily

Cons:

Weight gain, spots did come back after around 6 months being off Dianette

Dianette really cleared up my skin, was practically a God-send seeing as I've suffered with acne since the age of 12/13 (I'm 18 now). I was on it for around 6 months during which time it worked great for my skin, however it did make me gain weight, around a stone and a half. I'm naturally very slim and was only around the 7 stone mark when i started taking it but the weight gain, although not drastic, was still unpleasant as I'd never had a problem with that before. I came off Dianette after around 6 months, skin stayed clear for another 6 months but I then found the spots came back suddenly, although granted not as bad as before. Ive now starte taking Dianette again and in just a month my skin is so much clearer.

Pros:

First time I took it skin and face hair cleared up, came off for a while and when started taking it again had no effect on spots or hair

Cons:

Bad mood swings, only worked for about a year effects wore off.

Have to take this tablet for about 6 months before you notice any effect. I found after having a break from it to escape from mood swings which were horrendous, the tabletever had quite the same effect after this break. Spots never cleared up completely and hair has come back. Makes you put on weight too. Would only recommend if spots aren't too bad.

Pros:

Gets rid of nearly all spots.

Cons:

mild depression, nausea, headaches

I was on Dianette for two years prior to having my son. I felt fine, my mild acne (caused by PCOS) cleared up and i thought it was fantastic. After finishing breastfeeding i decided to go back on it and have taken it for 10 days and since day one have felt numb, down and nauseous Also smells which normally wouldn't bother me are making me feel sick and my sense of smell seems to be stronger. In fact if i didn't know better i'd think i was pregnant as it feels just like the first three months my pregnancy - but i'm definitely not! I have decided to stop taking it tomorrow as i feel awful, hopefully it won't take too long to be out of my system. I'm guessing the change in hormones after having a baby has made me react differently. Having spots constantly is horrible but not as horrible as i feel now and if i am miserable all the time it's not fair on my poor (but very understanding family). Fingers crossed.
