Pros:

Good for other health benefits.

Cons:

I had moderate acne before trying flaxseed oil and grounded flaxseed (1 pimple every 2 weeks). I took 2 tbsp of flaxseed oil and 2 tbsp of grounded flaxseeds per day for 3 weeks. My face exploded with cystic acne all over my face. They were red and sore for weeks. I stopped taking flaxseed all together and the acne went away, but it left me with a ton of marks all over my face. I will never take this again.

It may work for others, but it was a HUGE mistake for me to take it. I'll stick with getting my EFA's from 4 tbsp of liquid fish oil which helped me so much and 2-4 tbsp of coconut oil per day.

Cons:

Broke me out horribly.

I'm not sure why, but this broke me out horribly. I am a male and I'm guessing that it is the phytoestrogens. I have noticed that this tends to help girls more than guys. Estrogen dominance may be a cause of acne for some people, so please be weary of this. Flax is also very high in omega 6's which is not so good and the conversion rate of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) to DHA and EPA can be very low in most people. I think I saw a study showing it to range from .4% to 16%.

Stay away from Flaxseed Oil
Fish oil caps had given me the worst forehead acne - I've never had it before and when my dermo recommended that I take flax seed instead I was hesitant - and as it turns out, I should have listened to my gut instinct and said no because lo and behold, four days in, I'm sporting a crop of deep pimples across my forehead and it keeps on coming! If you're sensitive and have had problems with fish oil, I would NOT touch flaxseed.

Stay away!
I am prone to getting hormonal acne around my mouth. Normally it's not bad and I can live with it. When I started taking flaxseed oil it got horrible and I only realized after weeks that this was the reason. I also think that I started to smell differently (maybe not true though). I stopped taking it immediately and it still took months for me to get back to normal. I think it's due to the phytoestrogens it contains. Many people are estrogen dominant anyways, especially if you suffer from hormonal acne (may be cause by xenoestrogens). I am currently trying out DIM, which I find a logical conclusion, since flaxseed made everything so much worse.

Caused cystic acne
This is the first review I've written- to warn the acne prone to stay away. My skin was clear for 8 months on the B5 regimen, then I started taking flax seed for my health and woke up to an acne cyst and now have a scar. Stay away!!!

Never again!
it's been more than ayear that I have been having acne. my skin was fairly clear since until I became pregnant with my second child with indigestion, a friend of mine recommended I use flax seed/oil to help improve my metabolism. I researched on it as they said flax may not be good for pregnant women ( though I found out it was fine, in fact I gave birth to a super healthy boy). Anyway, I started getting some acne on my Left lower cheek... and to the right... I placed some topical cream hoping it would help which it did temporarily. now, more than a year has passed, and I still have acne that seems to get worse... I'm trying to remember what I did different why I started to have acne?! all I did was add flax seed to my diet... I guess I won't be taking any more flax starting today.

Pros:

None.

Cons:

Tried 1 tablespoon a day for only 3 days and within a week several deep, painful spots broke out along my jawline, much worse than any breakout I've had in years. The spots wouldn't come to a head and are still healing.

Never again.

Pros:

Reduced my dry-eye symptoms (I wear contact lenses)

Cons:

Gave me really bad skin

My friend recommended this product to me because I wear contact lenses and find that towards the end of the day, my eyes become dry and tired. I took two capsules a day for 2 weeks. Although I did notice that my eyes felt less irritable, I was also getting really big, painful spots, deep purple and 'cystic'. My skin also felt greasier and I looked awful! It took me a while to realise that the spots began the day I started taking the capsules. I've since stopped taking this product and although I am still seeing new spots, they are smaller and less severe. Never again!

Caused huge, sore cystic acne along my jawline and on my back.

I took 1 tsp of flaxseed oil a day for three weeks and got nothing but deep, cystic acne along my jawline and huge sore pimples in the middle of my back (never had any there before!) Oh and I also gained three pounds because of the extra fat intake from the oil. So this stuff obviously didn't work for me. I'm a 30 year old female who has had acne since I was 15 and there has never been a day in those 15 years when I haven't had at least a few pimples or more on my face. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who didn't outgrow acne after puberty. So since the flaxseed caused me to break out worse and gain weight, I'm going back to using the Proactiv Extra Strength kit and drinking one cup a day of Wu Long tea, which seems to help, but I still wish I could find something that would make my face clear since I'm 30 years old!
