Curly Hair A Result From Accutane

okay i posted about this before but i didnt get much help...maybe its because its so very hard to explain. but im posting pictures this time to help you get the idea. around month four of my treatment, my hair started thinning, drying out, breaking, and becoming oddly enough....curly. ive always had straight hair but now i have this somewhat curly mess that is completely unmanagable. these are pictures of my hair with no product. it gets much worse if im sweating or if i try to use a product because most products have some sort of water in them which curls my hair instantly...mainly the frontal region. my hair does the exact opposite of what id like it to do, i push it one way, it goes the other. and honestly folks, it makes my forehead look large and in charge with it pushing off the sides and curling up like it does. it exposes my temples and looks awful. so with the pictures and description...does anyone have any idea at all as to whats goin on? have you heard of it? will it go away and when? thanks! oh and btw...i had moderate persitent acne for quite some time...it went away completely month two, month and a half post and still clear as day.

thats not curly. its slightly wavy. curly hair is kinked if you look at it under magnification. your hair is still straightish. maybe you just never had it at that length and are only now noticing it. look at your baby pics. i never knew i had curly hair as a baby until i grew it out in my twenties and was like what the hell. then i searched and saw it was like that when i was 2 years old! i just always had it so short as an adolescent i never knew.

sorry, by curly...i meant that it has curled significantly from what it was before. to me, wavy hair can be managed with a little bit of product. i add anything to my hair, and it curls up even more almost as though its reacting to the water base. the corners, near my temples are the worst...they actually make curly q's when i sweat or add anything. trust me, this is completely out of the ordinary, for me at least. my hair structure has changed, grows in a different direction, reacts differently to moisture and sticks that way....is brittle, dry, broken, and unmanagable.

Accutane can make your hair curly, its a known side effect. However i think that its temporary in the vast majority of cases and it should pass within a few month of ending the treatment. I suppose it might be annoying, but in the grand scheme of things its kinda trivial, esp as tane has cleared you up.

thanks...yeah, its really a relief not having acne anymore but its like i traded one problem for another. im sure my bodies just recovering. ive never heard of curly hair being a symptom of accutane...and ive done a lot of online research but couldnt find anything specific. does anyone know why it does this to your hair....beentheredonethat....you have all the answers. all i know is that my hair is pissed. i bought some nizoral today, its for dandruff but studies have suggested that it improves hair thickness and growth...kind of an accidental discovery by the makers. has this happened to anyone else out of curiousity...if so, has it improved? thanks again.

My hair was wavy before i started but I never really had curls until about my third month of Tane. I think its just because of the dryness, your hair is so brittle. Im about 2 months post and its starting to go back to the way it was. Maybe just try not to wash it so much or find something that moisturizes.

hey there...an ex of mine was on accutane years ago when we were in college. his hair turned curlier than yours looks nearly overnight. the curls kinda diminished over the years, but it was pretty crazy. only difference is he didn't really mind it. his hair was thinning too, naturally (not just b/c of the accutane). just FYI, hope it helps.

thanks for all the input thus far. i have faith that my hair will go back to normal. it seems to have thinned all over, i know its from the tane. and i think it does have something to do with it being so brittle. i dont know exactly what causes it but im got an appointment with the derm on monday to get his expert opinion. ill be sure to give you all that i find out from that visit. ive been using nioxin shampoo and conditioner hair treatment....i havent noticed any results at all from it. rinsing with cold has thickened my hair up just a little bit, and i have this product called nizoral on order...its supposed to fight dandruff but improves hair thickness and growth much like rogaine would do. i have noticed since being off the tane that i have lots and lots of shorter, thin hair coming in right at the hairline....is this a good sign?

yep buddy i'm going through the SAME exact thing except as well as the curly hair i'm currently dealing with horrible horrible hair loss due to the stuff. I used to have thick straight hair, sort of like an early beatles lookish that was wonderful and i could style anyway i wanted etc etc. now after accutane my hair is weak dry and brittle and it curls in certain patterns. i literally now have these weak wirery strands sticking out of the back of my crown it's horrible. first off, yes the curly hair may be permenant, and second if you are losing your hair and it is breaking off etc that may very well be permanent too. it depends how long you have been off the stuff and are experiencing everything etc. usually hair loss and accutane effects on hair will subside within about two months time, anything after that and they tend to be permenant. to answer your question this is occuring because most people don't realize that accutane is and was actually first used as a chemotherapy agent. the reason why it fucks up our hair as with any chemo drug it stops the proliferation of cells as in slows down the production of all cells in the body, hence that is why chemo drugs kill hair because they kill the hair cells and slow them down as well. the hair cells are some of the fastest growing cells on our bodies and any chemo drug will affect them adversely for the most part. the reason why accutane is more lethal to the hair than most other chemo drugs is that it can stay in your system for many years after treatment, and this tends to permanently damage the hair follicle thus causing the breaking and curling of your hair and our current situation. many cancer patients report curly hair as a side effect of chemo therapy when their hair returns and all, and in many cases it is permanent. there was a great article on this but i dont know where ill see if i can find it. hope that helps.

Is this side effect common? because I am now officially scared that my hair is gonna turn curly

okay I just checked my hair.. and something is different. Some strands of hair are sort of wavy at the end, and that's never happened to me before.

derms don't give straight answers about this stuff so i he/she will be of any help. the most they will due is just reassure you that your hair will return to normal, but in all likelihood there is a chance it will not. like many others on here you're hair is now fucked from this stuff. derms don't really know of the side effects of accutane, and thus really shouldn't be the one's to prescribe it/handle the various side effects associated with it.

I really think you should ease up on the whole i hate accutane, i hate derms thing. Derms cant give yes or no answers about these things. On my first appt my derm told me all the horror stories about how some people have committed suicide, and how one of his previous patients needed a liver transplant due to tane. His exact words were that he couldn't promise me that those thing wont happen to me because he dosent know. All he could tell me was that he would be willing to put his own daughter on tane if needed along with some rough probabilities that dont really mean much. Hairloss is in the lealet he gave me, but he didnt esp mention it, i suppose he thought that if was willing to risk my liver, depression and possibly death then i wouldnt be put of by some hair thinning. I went on tane as a last resort and i know the possible risks. Im not trying to trivialise your problem, but dont go round preaching to people saying how tane is "in all likelyhood" gonna cause these permanent side effects when you have no evidence to back up your claims.

gdwright, it hasnt been long since you have been off tane. It takes 6 months for your skin to return to normal so it will probably take just as long for your hair to do the same. Your hair will probably return to normal, and getting stressed that it might not wont wont solve anything.

i don't feel like posting it again. there are a ton of stories from hundreds of people on here about how accutane has caused them permanent hairloss/damage. and this is only the stuff listed on the internet there are probably thousands out there dealing with this on some level. anyway if you want to go on accutane fully knowing that there is a decent possibility you could suffer certain hair loss that may be permanent than by all means go ahead, but just know everything before you start the stuff.

hey just for the information of anyone whos having curly hair syndrom such as myself....i picked up this deep conditioner the other day by pantene. its called extra straight..."get up to 75% straighter hair". and i think its for hispanic people because it has spanish all over it...that and thats what i came up with in my research. now up until recently, ive been using nioxin...the cleanser and the scalp tingly conditioner type stuff. honestly, i havent noticed anything from this product, though ill use it once in a while just because i can only imagine that the strong tingly sensation may be stimulating my hairs a bit. but back to the extra straight pantene...three days of use, and ive already noticed a difference! i havent used deep conditioners up until this point because i assumed the nioxin would do the trick...this stuff is pretty damn good. i still have that appointment with the derm tomorrow...ill let yall know what he says, but so far, so good...im satisfied. and uh, "ithappens"....no one can keep you from posting on these boards, but i can guarantee that pretty much everyone is tired of your horror stories...and whether or not you think everyone should here about how horrible your experience was...youve pushed it to the point where your opinions are irrelevant and unwanted. got it? i dont want you in my topic. thanks
