So I am on retin a mirco .1%, and have not seen much improvment in hyperpigmentation over the course of 4-5 months.
I seems that alot of people have success with an AHA at fading hyperpigmentation. However, I was thinking that there is no way 10% aha is stronger than retin a micro, which would mean aha wouldn't work for me either.
My question is - Is AHA very good specifically for the treatment of hyperpigmentation (even better than retin a is)?
I'm going to ask my dermatologist if introducing an aha into my regimine is a good idea, but I was wondering what someone who has more knowledge of this stuff thinks. Thanks!
i just read this article and it explains the difference. basically it says that glycolic acid is kind of a baby step to retin-a.

Ok...So I just tried this "glytone mini peel gel" with 10.8% glycolic acid recommended by my derm and it was awful. The marks are BRIGHT red and skin around it looks sun burned. I threw that crap out...never using it again. Any Idea on how to soothe this situation and make the marks go back to their normal redness? Ya think it would only take a day or two?

As long as it is minor redness that is how the product is intended to work. In a few days new skin will be revealed. Just make sure not to pick at it or it will stay red for a while. Same thing happened to me. I apply retin a nightly to my face excluding forehead. Got a pimple on my temple, put retin-a on it, looked like a burn, took a week to heal and wahlah! Redness is gone and no scar. In my experience Retin-A does help with hyperpigmentation as long as sunscreen is used daily. Also hydroquinone works very well too.

I use Retin a with no problem whatsoever. I think I had a rare allergic reaction to glycolic acid perhaps. I really have no idea though.
In my experience Retin - A thinned the skin on my forehead which seems irreversible. The product is not to be used without caution. Please look into less harsh products, possibly Snail Cream. Otherwise red marks will fade in time and thats the best and safest option.
Retin-A actually has the opposite effect, it builds collagen which does not thing the skin rather makes it thicker. Besides the point, letting it heal naturally along with sunscreen is one of the best options.

Retin A builds collagen and thickens the dermis only - the side effect of this is that it changes the epidermis cells and changes the state of the elastin in some people. My skin thinned from using this product and has never returned to the thickness it once was. There is a lot of people who have experienced the same side effect as me from using the product. Everyone reacts differently and it should be used with caution.
My red marks STILL look much more red and noticeable, even 3 days after the 10% peel. I thought 10% was supposed to be very mild, but I guess I was wrong. How much longer do you guys think it will take for the redness of the marks to revert back to their original state (like before I did the peel?) It's EXTREMELY frustrating when you try to make things better, and they only end up getting worse. (even if only for a week or 2) I know many of you must feel the same way when things like this happen...

Can I enquire what products you are using on your skin just now post peel? Also please bare in mind that the skin takes aprox 28 days to turn full cycle. I would imagine that half this time you will begin to see the damaged skin from the peel has left and the fresher skin coming to form. You have essentially burned the epidermis so redness is to be expected for a little while. Please do not use any harsh topicals as your skin heals from the peel. Instead baby the skin and use sunscreen only when you need to - try to stay away from sunlight as much as possible. I know that it must be very frustrating but this is only temporary and time will heal it.

28 days? That's not TOO bad I guess. Thanks for the info. Right now I use CeraVe gentle cleanser, and I am putting tons on CeraVe lotion on the areas that are red. I find the CeraVe products to be excellent. I still use the retin a at night.
Your welcome for the information.
Im not too sure about CeraVe products, I dont think they are sold here in the UK. I did have a quick Google and looked at the ingredients of CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser. I just copied and pasted the ingredients here below. As you can see theres some good things for the skin like Glycerin and Hylaronic Acid. There is some things that might be against the healing of the skin and causing more redness such as Cetearyl Alcohol and Sodium. Sodium is salt ( you can guess that this additive on open wounded skin would not feel good). Alcohol is not good either, as it burns and evaporates, this should also be avoided on fresh skin post peel. Have a look at your products ingredients lists and in my opinion dump anything thats got salt or vodka in it
Purified Water, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6-II, Ceramide 1, Hyaluronic Acid, Cholesterol, Polyoxyl 40 Stearate, Glyceryl Monostearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Cetyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Phytosphingosine, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum
In my opinion Im still not sold on Retin A - it damadged my skin, thinned it and now I have paper like flesh which Im negative to myself about everyday. This topical is a high dosage of vitamin A. Its the topical form of Accutane essentially which has over 180 side effects. Vitamin A incorages the cell turnover of skin, speeds it up and makes your skin shed faster. Right now your skin needs to be mildly cared for. Baby it and let the skin and epidermis heal, not try and speed the skins turnover as it currently has no epidermis to work with.
Ill link you to this video, a girl who uses oatmeal on her skin, its naturally non comogenic ( non clogging) anti bacterial, moisturises and calms redness. I would just put some oatmeal in a bowl of warm water, let the cream come from the oatmeal and use a spoon to just scoop some of the creamy water. Use the cloudy water from the oatmeal and not the actual pieces to cleanse your flesh. This will be very soothing and mild.
PS - I should add that moisturisation is most definitely a crucial part of the healing process just now post peel so keep using the cereVa moisturiser if its not got harsh ingredients or purchase something that is kinder and does the job. Possibly Shea Butter from a health food store for instance.
I understand that everyone's skin is different. Retin - A is the reason I am only trying to treat redmarks right now, instead of actual acne. I have not broken out in a long time thanks to retin-a. As for the redmarks I am going to take evryone's advice and just let TIME heal them instead of worrying about them so much.
