Poll: Which marks do you hate the most red marks or dark marks?
When i was a teenager i usted to get red marks but i was not too obsesssed about my skin now that i am in my 20s i hate my skin because all i get are dark marks after my acne heals and makes me very self-conscious. To me dark marks are more noticeable and very unattractive. I wish I could cover them up but I can't because it would only aggravate my acne and make me uncomfortable because I am a guy. How do you guys deal deal with this? because I have been isolating a lot because of this damn dark marks.
Make sure you wear sunscreen to prevent them from getting darker. There are also lightening products you can use to help fade them faster. I'm not sure what your skin color is.... but maybe this will help explain why this happens.
There is a scale called the fitzpatrick scale. There are 6 skin tone types. So it depends on where you fall on this scale what color your marks will be. Someone who is a Type 1 is very fair and never can get a tan... always burns (think of a redhead with freckles). This type has very little melanin in their skin. So their marks will be red.
But someone who is a Type 6 is very dark and has alot of Melanin in their skin. Their marks will be dark.
I'd guess type 1,2 & 3 prob get red marks. And type 4, 5 & 6 get darker marks. Something like that.
Melanin is what gives you pigment in your skin. Type 6 has twice as much melanin as type 1. When you have an injury your body produces melanin to protect itself. So that is why scars turn dark. And when the sun hits it.... it will just get darker. You produce melanin to protect your body from the sun... this is a TAN! It's just your body's way of protecton. But someone who is a level 1 or 2 on the fitzpatrick scale burns easily... they don't produce enough melanin and this is why they can get skin cancer much easier than someone with darker skin.
So melanin is a good thing... but overproduction of it will cause hyperpigmentation. And if you have an injury or healing ACNE that is called Post Imflammatory Hyperpigmentation AKA Dark or Red Marks!! Which we all hate. lol

i am like a 3 and a half or 4 but i am very but it depends.
i think the scale might be a little inaccurate for me, hmm? as you can see i'm brown/olive-skinned with red undertones, and i'm VERY prone to BOTH red and dark marks. i've had both in varying degrees. my red marks are usually worse than my dark marks. but i'm not fair-skinned either.
