Hi everyone, I'm a 32 year old female who never had acne until last year. My dermatologist tried different treatments and nothing is clearing up my acne, so I went to the gynecologist last week and she asked for some blood work. My estrogen levels are ok my testosterone is low but my progesterone is basically 0.
I stopped getting my periods last year around March and the acne started showing up in July.
Ps: I never took birth controll pills and I was never pregnant.
Could my low progesterone and acne be related ? What should I ask my gynecologist at my next appointment? Anyone dealing with a similar situation?
Any insides much appreciated
I believe low progesterone could affect acne insofar as you may not have enough progesterone to "fight" against your androgens (male hormones), which could then lead to more oil/acne.
Have you discussed it with your doc? Remember to stay your own advocate with this stuff. Hormones are delicate things and if it were me, I always err on the side of doing less to my body and/or looking for alternatives that can get my body back in balance naturally. But then again, sometimes something really is wrong and treatment is sometimes required.
At any rate, stay your own advocate, educate yourself, and work closely with a doctor you really trust. Get a second opinion if needed.
