As a newly graduate nurse who has a BSN I must say I'm glad to have found this website for I to have acne. I have read some of the diets suggested and would like to point out that there is no link between diet and acne. Acne is caused by large over productive sebaceous glands. Sebaceous gland production is influenced by androgens the hormones found in men and women. Genetics also influence sebaceous gland size so some people have larger more productive glands than others. Dieting will not help acne numerous medical studies have proved this.

i think i agree with u to an extent. from my own experience i actually performed my own "study" on myself and sustained from greasy, fried foods for quite some time and then purposely introduced them into my diet in a decent amount and noticed breakouts . so, how does one explain that? i actually did that twice in order to see if the food was actually a contributing factor and both times it was. "coincidence" ?

Acne can get worse or better on its own due to your hormonal changes that you have no control over.

Dairy products are a prime example of foods that can definitely alter you hormonal balance and cause hypertrophy of your sebaceous glands. Milk contains IGF-1 (Growth hormone), sex hormones, and other hormones that have been injected into the cow to quadruple the milk output. There is a correlation between dairy and acne...it may not be a dominant correlation but certainly does exist

I beg to disagree. The only reason my acne ( which I had for 20 years ) has disappeared today is because I stay away from sugar. The minute I slip and eat anything sweet it comes back.

I have gone from cystic acne on my cheeks every day to perfectly clear skin with good skin tone due to overhauling ny diet.

I finally realised that no one food stuff was linked (except dairy and sugar, which a doctor told me), but it was quality of diet overall.

I sharedhow I clearedup my skin (after 16 years) in holistic health forum!

I would like to share my own expierence about diet and acne.
I took food intolerance test which cost around 400 pounds because I was sure my diet was causing my acne. So I found out I am highly intolerant to dairy, gluten and paprika. Besides that, the test also showed that I have candida overgrowth. Since then I cut all the products containing these ingredients and all the sugars, including fruits or honey, vegetables with high glycemic index like potatoes or carrots, mushrooms and vinegar, all the marinated food. I was already vegan before the test. It was obvious I could not handle this overly strict diet. I started eating meat, fish and eggs again. And after more than three months of completely obeying the diet I noticed my nails and hair got stronger, my stomach was no longer bloating BUT my skin did not get any better.
So I think there is no link between acne and diet.

Wow some of you people are ridiculous. "Well since my diet never affected my acne, I declare that this means there is absolutely no correlation between diet and acne. And this applies to everyone in the entire world because it applies to me." And no, diet does not affect *my* acne as I only randomly got acne at 20 and cleared it before I hit 21, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna spout some BS about how my experience is universal.

There is not one particular fooditem or food group linked to acne (hormone-filled dairy aside). Acne is a sign of hormonal imbalance, linked to nutrient deficiencies also. There are so many studies showing nutrient deficiencies in people with acne!

Eating a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet rich in dark green, leafy veg will help most. If it doesn't, the root cause needs to be further investigated.

Food intolerance tests have zero evidence in science, plus the person above added back in inflammatory foods (fish and eggs).

Check out nutritionfacts.org for critical reviews of actual published research.

The ONLY reason there will never, ever research to 'prove' a link between diet and acne is because it is absolutely impossible to have a double-blind, placebo-control study (I.e. Randomly assign acne patients to aneating condition they are not aware of).

Whilst you can claim no diet-acne link for some, I can literally control my acne through what I eat and stress, so a blanket statement is false!
