Hi,
I am 33 yr old male with acne since I was around 14. I am not getting anywhere with the NHS and anitbiotics, creams, BP etc so I want to find a private dermatologist.
Could anyone give me advice on the best way to find one? I always think got straight to BUPA but are there many other options that are not as expensive?
Thanks in advance
Hello I might be making assumptions here but are you looking for Accutane? I'm from the uk as well just north of London and I sought out a private dermatologist through BMI healthcare. My acne is getting progressively worse everyday and the thought of waiting for a nhs referral was just soul destroying for me. Anyways I saw on 2 weeks ago, he examined me started listing the options and when I shook my head like 'this shit just needs to go' he point blank asked me if I had come for Accutane lol I said yes Dr I have and he was like ok atleast your honest and whacked out the paper work. I should be starting in 2 weeks. imagine...NHS I would be starting in October proberly after getting jerked around with antibiotics etc like you said.
costing, I paid 200 for consultation and will be paying 150 monthly to see him. I don't know how much the script will cost yet but my GP has agreed to do my blood work monthly. I'm doing a 4 month course. I reckon it will end up costing me about 1k-1.2k.
In private because costing is not an issue t just give you what you want. Sick as it is, money talks.

Hi, yeah essentially I am. I would love if there was another option but with having persistent cystic acne at my age particularly being a male I feel like accutance is my best shot.
Was it quite easy to get your GP to agree to the blood tests? did you just go for an appointment and ask them?
I actually saw a private derm when I was around 16, he mentioned accutane then but all you heard were scare stories which meant my parents didn't even consider it. Wish I'd given it a go then instead of constant acne through my teens, 20s & now 30s
Hey well i wouldn't say he it was easy to get him to agree, I went in there with whole sheet of things I needed from him in a 10 minute appointment and I didn't even ask him he just said 'I need the schedule of treatment so I can arrange blood tests' and I was like ok sweet. When I spoke to my private derm's secretary she didn't seem to think the private company would be requesting bloods anyways which is abit worrying I think. I am sure if you got a private derm to agree to treatment and then saw your GP about your plans they would be willing to give you a monthly blood form because that's all your asking them for. I'm also doing 4 months rather than 6 which helps keep costs down in appointments.
I would request bloods from your GP before you see the derm because asa man you could get the script the same day. You need the following:
U+E's
Liver Function
Lipid profile
Full blood count
I'm abit nervous though as I'm assuming with a 4 month treatment they hit you hard which I think means pizza face city within 2 weeks. But I guess the quicker you get all the shit out the sooner the marks can fade while you have acccutane preventing new acne.
Hope that helps.
