Hi everyone, found the forum and have been lurking but need some advice. I have had moderate to almost severe acne from when I was about 13 to about 19. From 19 to 28 I have rarely ever had any breakouts above my cheekbones but have always had 1-8 spots around my mouth and jaw line and about the same on the back of my neck. I seem to be able to go for weeks clear then all of the sudden I will have a few weeks of breakout. It seems to get really back about the same 2 times every year in the spring and winter. I have never really had any issues with spots on my back or chest. I am wondering if it might be hormones as I lost most of my hair from 17-24 and my facial hair is very patchy... I only shave 2 times a week generally. My only real regimine has been St. Ives Apricot scrub in the morning and then clearasil for breakouts. I also switched to a non flouride toothpaste which seemed to help a little as well. I have never been to a dermatologist but am thinking about finally ponying up the money to go. It is a little frustrating still dealing with this at 28. Any suggestions? I have attached a picture of my current state which is about average but many times worse. Thanks
It could definitely be hormone related. The thing with clearasil or any acne treatment is that to spot treat is useless. Acne medicines do not clear up your current acne, they instead prevent future breakouts which can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Also, scrubs are generally harsh on acne prone skin.
You should look into diet as well as safe supplements for men to take (hormonal acne treatment seems to have more options for women in terms of prescription medication)
Going to see a derm may be a good idea but don't expect them to be the be all and end all.
