Follitulitis Or Acne?

I have had acne for 12 years and last year finally went to my GP about it. He prescribed doxycycline which cleared me after 3 months, however the capsules ran out and it took a week to get a new prescription, I therefore broke out like never before. After that the doxy no longer worked, after 3 more months I switched to lymecycline, which did nothing, 3 months later erythromycin, which also did nothing, along with differin, which made things even worse. My acne has never been this bad and now I'm wondering if the antibiotics have led to follitulitis - either fungal or gram negative. I have used BP too which used to improve things slightly but never cleared me.

I just wondered what anyone else thought? I have been washing my face with Hibiscrub (Hibicleans) for a few days now and I also have head and shoulders shampoo, it hasn't made a difference so far. I have an appt booked with my GP in a few weeks and I'm going to ask for a referral to a specialist derm (even though my GP used to be a derm).

Try not getting your face wet at all, no washing or showering or anything (you can do below your neck I guess), for a week. You're kidding yourself if you think you have anything to lose... no offense, but none of us do.

Hey :) I had a look at your pictures and I really don't think you have folliculitis. To me anyway it looks like acne. Does your skin itch?

In the meantime before your go see a specialist, who I HOPE helps you out, stop using what your using unless you actually think it IS impoving? I think you might be irritating it more. Why not just cleanse in the morning with water only, since it is not harsh on skin. Try not touching your face too much either and just relax and not stress, not until you see this dermatologist and you can explain your worries to him/her and your thoughts to him/her.

I wish you the best of luck.

Yes it does itch a bit. I don't think not washing my face is going to help tbh, I have tried this before when I was younger and if I ever miss a day then I break out even more (yes in fact it can get worse than it is!). I do think the hibiscrub is working slowly, I haven't actually got that many active spots, nearly all the red marks/bumps are previous spots that just take forever to disappear - I think those pictures really highlight them, probably the flash of the camera and the fact I have extremely pale skin. I have been wearing bare minerals make up for a few years and now I'm wondering if I've developed a sensitivity or something, so I'm experimenting by using a different foundation for a while. I know everyone will probably be like 'don't wear any make up' - this is not going to happen, there is no way I am leaving my house without covering at least some of it, especially since I work in a hospital and have to face the public everyday. I wash my make up brushes regularly, I never use old make up and I always remove my make up at night thoroughly.

I'm just hoping now that a specialist can give me more information and try some new medications. I have always said I wouldn't go on isotretinoin but it's fast becoming an option....

can u track any pattern?

u say they itch - u mean always or when u eat or touch something?

It always itches slightly (when I'm busy I don't notice it so it's hard to tell). I have changed my cleansers, moisturisers etc every couple of months and haven't noticed a pattern....it's so difficult since the face takes so long to heal anyway. I've had hives before and I don't think it looks like that. My face never used to be this bad, it only got this way after the antibiotics :( I really wish I hadn't taken them, I used to get bacne and chest acne when I was younger and it went on its own, but on the antibiotics it came back! I've been off antibiotics about 2 months now and my chest and back are clear again :) I don't know what that's about!
