I developed some of these after going on Differin. And now they won't go away!!! Extremely frustrating. I'm going to the derm soon and am going to ask about a laser treatment.
Anyone look into laser? I don't know which kind. I hope the derm will tell me something I can do about these.
I've got these as well, i've only used normal OTC cosmetics and the last four months oral tetracycline and BP. My chin is the only area i've applied the BP to.
If you google sebaceuous hyperplasia it seems a likely explanation but can't find any links to getting rid of the bl@@dy things!
If I squeeze the skin of my shin lightly together it looks way worse
I went for a free laser consultation and asked her about these. She said it wouldn't work for them. Then she goes, "They are called milia." And I swear within only 1-2 minutes of seeing her, she reaches for her extraction needle and says to sit back on the chair. She painfully pokes two of my spots, then goes, "Okay, they are not milia"... Now I have two bloodied scabs, on my chin and cheek. It's worse now. They don't even take the time to look at your face properly before jumping into something. I guess I'll try another derm and see what they say, because I hate these bumps.
Read this link. Mine are getting better!

^I read that link but didn't find anything definitive...
Anyway, yesterday I went to see my derm for a follow-up appointment and remembered to ask about the bumps on my chin. He said they're scarring, definitely not acne and that there isn't really anything that can be done. I asked him if he's seen anything like that before and he said he has, and one unfortunate patient even has it on his nose. :/
Well, it's not a big deal to me if they're still there because they're not that noticeable anymore (or maybe I just ignore them now). So I've just accepted them and I'm going to leave them alone, no more picking and squeezing and them.
BUMP!
Ugh! I have these exact same bumps and I am sick and tired of them! I was on a long (1-2 years) course of oral antibiotics for acne, and now am on a combination of cindamycin (topical antibiotic), differin, and birth control. It seems that these bumps have gotten a lot worse/more noticable when I began this new regiment...though my inflamed acne is mostly gone. Sometimes I even feel like they're spreading.
I've always heard that chin acne was hormonal acne and believed this to be the cause of the bumps. But after reading all these posts, I'm not so sure. I feel kind of discouraged after reading that no one's had any luck clearing these up...
What drives me crazy is that bumps can NOT be covered with makeup!! I'd rather have a lot of flat red spots than these white bumps.
I would love to hear what people have been trying recently and if anyone has found anything that works.
I realize this is an ancient thread, but I have yet to find a solution. I was on retin-a for a good 2 years, then I was switched to tazorac (another vitamin-a derivative treatment), which I found even better (on it for 1 year). I would use glycolic acid lotion in the morning. I've also been on an antibiotic for 2 years. Between these 3 products, my inflammatory acne was gone, and I got a rare small pimple now, at worst.
However, before using that regimen, I had the chin bumps. After it - I still had that bumpy texture.
Previously, I had mainly used BP, BHA & AHAs to treat my acne. Basically, I've tried what many of you have done, with no success, as far as this bumpy texture goes. These regimens have all improved my skin in many ways, but this last hurdle is a tough one.
I think if retin-a/tazorac or glycolic acid was going to solve it, then it would've shown some improvement by now. It's been 3 years of this stuff, and my chin is as bumpy as ever.
I've read stuff about "orange peel" texture skin as a sign of aging, and how it has something to do with skin elasticity and tissue connectivity, which reminds me of this dystrophic calcification "theory"....
My derm said it was secondary to scarring. Like a build up of calcium in the skin.
I want to try electro cautery, but i can't find anything about it here
I've had these pain in the ass bumps for about two years. There is no itch or sensitivity. They never change locations. They vary in size. They are colorless and number about 15 that are noticable in sunlight. My skin is otherwise clear, but it did take accutane to get me there. I read this whole thread. Here is the information I've gathered.
What we have in common.
-Most of us(if not all) have taken oral antibiotics
-We have all tried topicals
-We are all acne prone
-We are all royally pissed, and our dermatologists turn us into cynics
What these could be(from my extensive research):
-Deep clogged pores
-Walled Cysts
-Sebaceous Hyperplasia
-Keratinization
-Mutant Acne - Which I would argue is caused by oral antibiotic resistance
-Hypertrophic scars
-Flat Warts - or some variation look at some pictures on the web some look similiar
I believe these are some sort of weird skin thickening, like a form of hyper-keratinization. I have no idea what causes it though. I have tried pretty much everything(retina, doxy, tane, aha, bha, moisturizers, wart remover) to no avail.
However I'm trying something interesting now, Apple Cider Vinegar. This is something that is used as a wart remover. I applied it to a cotton ball and used a band aid to hold it to my chin for about 3 hours, and it definitely seemed to pull them further out of my skin, as they looked really swollen. It really irritated my skin though, so I've been lightly applying it with a q tip every night.
In short, they look like shit, but the skin on most of these bumps has been shedding. The bumps come out of the skin and the skin on top dies and can be peeled away. It seems to be working. I have a couple of spots that have bled, so I have been hiding from the world. Don't rush to try this - I'll be the guinea pig and report back, I'll let you know how it goes. I'm a 24 yr old, otherwise good looking single man, who needs a smooth chin. These things are from satan!!!
Lets team up, and figure out what works. Keep this thread alive, I think this is a new condition.
Hey guys,
I just wanted to say that these small bumps wreaked havoc on my skin over the period of several months. I first noticed them a while after taking oral antibiotics which have been prescribed by my dermatologist. I have not only got them on my chin but also all over my cheeks and forehead. After doing some research I found that the holistic approach seemed to be promising: Changing my diet AND trying several different remedies.
My diet was what made the biggest impact. While not getting any inflammated acne anymore these small bumps also seemed to slowly disappear. But it was a slow and painful process: I had so many of them that some days I would stress myself into not thinking that my diet would do any good. I finally decided to put it to the test: Over the course of approximately two weeks I pigged out on sugar, fats and dairy. After that I had FIELDS of this small f*ckers all over my face again.
Lesson learned, I changed my diet again. After a lot of experimenting I came to the conclusion that the praised low carb diet was not adjuvant for all the woundhealing that had to take place. I continued to eat the main foods of said diet such as grass fed ground beef, chicken, fish, eggs and vegetables but I added sweet potatoes to get some energy. VoilA: skin was on the road of getting clear again.
But as I mentioned, it was painfully slow. So I did some research and added the Nizoral anti fungal cream (and by that I mean HEAVY doses of it) to my regimen of water rinsing and baking powder scrubs. Having made that these little pimples faded within 2 weeks. I have not one single of the left on my face.
Thats awesome for you man. I'm trying the nizoral now, too. Why not, nothing else has worked. Maybe these bumps are fungal. Kinda weird though since theyve been there for years and are in the same exact spots. Look damn similar to the picture.
I would be the happiest man alive if these bumps would got away. Lets keep the thread up, I need help dermatologists can't provide.
Hey, I just wanted to add something: The one thing that really eliminated all of those bumps within no time was the infamous caveman face wash regimen (i.e. not washing your face but with cold water every now and then). Think about it, if these small bumps are really a fungal infection it'd obvious that a deficit in the acid mantle of the skin might be the cause of it.
I was on doxy for about 1 and a half years on and off. I would say these popped up about 6 months into taking it. I refuse to ever take antibiotics long term again. I think that because antibiotics lower your immunity, these bumps are allowed to exist. Its either bacterial, fungal, or viral in nature. If I could just figure out which it was for sure, I know I would be able to treat these.
Does this pic look like scarring to anyone? It doesn't to me.
I had the bumps before I went on antibiotics...so that theory does not work for me. I have been on antibiotics for over 2 years (& I am currently on them). Right now, I am on Bactrim DS. Honestly, I am scared to go off them, because no topical has controlled my acne so well on its own.
This is my chin BEFORE I went on antibiotics (it looked worse in person & it's even worse now):
Okay, yup. That's exactly what I have. They really dont look terrible in indoor lighting, but in my car or in a room where the sun is shining through the window they look really noticeable. I'm at my wits end. I have treated them as acne, dermatitis, keratinization, sebaceous hyperplasia, flat warts, etc. to no avail. I haven't gone to a dermatologist for this specifically, but I'm about to go to one and demand some answers.
Siouxsie, mine are just like that.
The situation on my chin hasn't changed much. They seem to come and go, but they are always present and noticeable in any case. They're not super noticeable in real life unless you're close to me, but in pictures, man can those thing make my chin look dimply! I hate it.
It's been a while since I last posted. Since then, I've gone on and finished accutane (finished at the end of September!). That's helped the acne, of course, but the tiny chin bumps haven't responded to that at all. Then I tried Retin-A for a while (not for the bumps) but it just made me break out, so I'm not using anything except Purpose Gentle Cleanser and Cerave PM lotion skincare-wise. So yeah, frustrating little buggers, they won't let up! My new derm (the one who prescribed me accutane) looked at them and said they were scars as well. I really don't think so, but I can't argue against that since there's no other explanation. Oh well... The search for the solution goes on!
Anyone think this could be perioral dermatitis. My bumps are like the pictures on this post, noticeable but not inflamed. Maybe this is just a less inflamed version of pd. Fluoride in toothpastes can cause it as well as certain lotions and cosmetic products. Anyone else looked into this?
Just doesnt seem likely these are scars. The point of origin of all my bumps are at a hair follicle.
I tried apple cider vinegar, but it was too irritating and had no effect on the bumps, except making them look worse. I'm washing the area with nizoral anti fungal shampoo twice a day, and it helps for a few hours. Makes me think this is a fungal infection. Nizoral shampoo doesnt seem to be strong enough. Most people seem to get these after a course of antibiotics, which weakens the immune system, making the user more prone to fungal infection. Knowing the cause would help us find the solution. Anyone thought about a biopsy?
Hey everyone. There was another ancient thread that I found that advised people with such bumps (which I have a few also) to use a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate (which also causes canker sores) or flouride. Other than that, I am afraid the only other advice I can give any of you is to use a good BHA. I hear mandelic acid is becoming more and more popular on non-inflamed acne even though I have not tried it myself. I'm pretty sure it is not perioral dermatitis because generally PD is characterized by multiple papules and pustules concentrated in a specific area.
Anyhow, best of luck
