Nizoral is an over the counter dandruff shampoo that you can use as a face wash to control fungal folliculitis. If you check out this thread:

http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Pityrospo...is-t208147.html

There is a lot of info on PF, as well as many natural aids- although from personal experience, the natural aids didn't seem to do anything. Maybe if had stuck with them for several months, but in my case nizoral got the job done in less than two weeks so.. :)

As far as your observation of not wearing a hat: Once the overgrowth of fungus is triggered, it can keep going on its own, so that wouldn't rule it out. If you want to be sure, the best thing would be to go see a derm with your suspicions. But the way I see it is, if you've tried a bunch of things and it hasn't worked, why not give nizoral a try (it's gentle, OTC and cheap), and you should get your answer in about two weeks. If anything at least you'll have ruled it out and can move on to other things.

Good luck!

Hey,

Sorry im going on now...from what ive been reading what youve written it does all sound like it could be a fungus thing.

Also i understand that antibiotics can worsen it,are they the cause? As thinking about it i was quite ill for about 1 yr 1/2 as i started work at a nursey and within that time i must have had 4 lots of antibiotic!! And then another 2 in the last 6 months for acne.My gosh what have i done to my poor body :(

Also i never used to eat properly and worked myself in to the ground.

It first started on my forehead and down the sides, almost looked like big goosebumps and itched like crazy!

Also have some on my body, when they first appear they itch. Its mainly my forehead thats the problem and around my nose.

I sure hope it is this as it may respond then.

the nizoral cream as I understand it is prescription only, but Nizoral shampoo should be over the counter. You can also use Head and Shoulders Classic Clean- this one is a bit harsher though, so don't leave it on too long (past 3-5 minutes). It will also dry out your skin more.

As far as creams go- I probably wouldn't use a cream, because PT thrives in moist and oily environments. And foot creams in general contain very emolient ingredients that you shouldn't use on your face as it might clog pores. With the description of your symptoms, it really sounds like PT is what you have.

Good luck!

Hiya,

Thanks for your reply.

I managed to get some nazirol shampoo today,so do i use it on my skin as directed for hair?

The last couple of days it has begun to itch again.grrr drives me mad.Im guessing this is because i had a riding hat on for about an hour saturday and thre weather was so hot! I was wet with sweat and couldnt get to have a shower until hours later! Surely normal acne would not react like this?

The doctor did say the hair follicles were infected but said it was a type of acne.Every type of lotion and pill i had was antibiotic, so if it is pf then this will have made it worse!

Do you cut out yeast in your diet also?

Thanks again

Hiya,

I used the shampoo on my hair lastnight to see how i reacted, then used it on my forehead this morning. It did feel quite soothing and ive not itched yet!

How often should i be using it and does it get worse before it gets better?

Thanks again

Yes just take a dime-size amount, lather it on your skin, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse- you can use your regular cleanser for the rest of your face. I started out with once a day, then I moved on to twice a day. It shouldn't get worse before it gets better. It took me a few days to start seeing results and about two weeks to get completely clear. I've stayed completely clear since, as long as I keep up with the Nizoral.

No, I haven't stopped eating yeast. In fact, after I discovered Nizoral, I was able to start eating all the things I had cut out of my diet in an effort to get rid of my acne. It's not necessarily a good thing, as I'm eating much more chocolate, cheese and bread, but it feels soooo good not to have to worry about what I eat in that respect.

I used the Nizoral for about 3 weeks and my forehead has improved significantly.

I may try it again soon and see if I can get the rest of my face to clear up as well.

I read another place to use the 2% Nizoral daily for 5 days, leave it on 5 minutes and wash

off. Then twice a week for at least a month. If it clears, then use it twice a month or more.

when did you start seeing noticable results?

I think mine was caused by playing baseball and being sweaty on forehead and having hat rubbing it in. Also, my forehead tends to be very oily.

Appreciate all your help thanks!

The bumps that were bigger seem to have come to a head, by this i mean whatever is in them seems to be at the surface.

I didnt itch today until early eve after going to my horses and getting a bit clammy after been out in the heat.As soon as i got home i showered and used nizarol on my forehead,20 mins later the itching stopped.Does this all sound familiar?

Its great you can scoff what you want now :)

I really hate having to put on my riding hat as i know it aggravates it, but id be tempting fate not wearing it!

Wearing hats is a big problem. After sweating does the yeast then grow as this is when it seems to itch?

I have the same thing (10 months now). Tried 1% Nizoral after reading threads here on acne.org. Face cleared up in a week. I was so stoked. But after a few weeks, it came back. I have been using the 2% Nizoral for the last two weeks, but it hasnt gotten better, and could even be worse than when I started. I think I am going to stop using Nizoral, as I may have developed a sensitivity to it.

Anyone try sulfacetamide for this?

I am 16, I just turned 16 yesterday, my birthday was completely ruined because of these bumps. I can't get a derm appoint until sep, thats 3 months away. no health insurance. i have no little money. i can't styand these little bumps on my left cheek and between eyebows. I had this for 4 days now. it's so ichy. now i decided to let it dry, instead of a moisterzier, because i heard fungi suffer from lack of water. I'm suffering so much.

Hey guys, I really need help. Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

I think I had these skin colored bumps on my neck. The only difference is I was dumb enough to scrub it really hard and irritate it and now it broke out horribly. I get red, inflamed, whiteheads on my neck now. I used to RARELY get neck acne but now my neck acne looks very severe.

I want to try the Nizoral shampoo and I probably will.

However, my question is... I happen to have Fluconazole prescribed to me from a while back. Can I take it for this? I am desperate to heal my neck. Thanks.

I went to the doctor instead of derm because i can't get a appointment until september. it's july.....my doctor recommended me "nystatin" cream usp, 100,000 units per gram. it worked on non-severe parts on my face. it hasn't cleared up my severe clusters. Please God let this clear up in a week please. I have an important place to go.

Oh goodness, thanks for the heads up on alt possibilities. I am so excited about setting an appt with a derm so maybe he can just tell me that its something i can take a pill to take and get ride of. I love to web md myself or self diagnose. SO sad.

I also have those bumps on my forehead, and their a pain to deal with!

I think the thing that annoys me most is the fact that it's not even active acne, like it's just THERE!

I also have oily skin which could explain how I got them..

Is there anything over-the-counter you'd suggest to help get rid of them? I'm trying to treat my acne myself, and if it doesn't get better in a few months, then I'd probably see a Derm...

Has anyone tried the "Head And Shoulders" trick for these bumps? Have you had any success? I'm tempted to try it...

Yes, Head and Shoulders works- make sure it's "classic clean". It's pretty drying though- I prefer Nizoral.

Does anyone have any suggestions if everything else fails to work?

I've made at least 5 visits to my new derm--he seemed to be the most knowledgeable out of all the derms I've been to--and still no progression. It's so disheartening when all the medications don't work. Since I have it on the face/neck/chest/shoulders/back/stomach he's prescribed me oral antifungals but none work. And the last appt he simply told me to "moisturize" and that my skin is really dry and under the microscope he saw traces of ringworm (tinea corporis) even though I know what ringworms look like and I definitely do not have anything like that. They are just fleshy looking bumps that never rise to the surface, some I can extract (sebum) others just sit there and do nothing but look awful. The ones on my chest/back/shoulder/and neck are red bumps (some of which have a white dot in the center but I do not try to pop them). I do not want to waste expensive retinols on large areas of the body like that to try and get rid of them but seriously nothing works. I do not have insurance so a $75 visit to the derm to simply tell me i need to moisturize is a load of crap and I'm really disappointed.

I'm frustrated because my skin is really dry but super oily and no matter what I do I cannot get this under control. This seriously has me feeling depressed. >_< GRRR!!!

Hello. First off, ringworm is generally the same thing as folliculitis - it's yeast. I think you have a systemic yeast infection... Even if I'm wrong and you just have it on the skin, you might want to treat it the same way. The only way to really get rid of something like this is to change your diet ALONG with antifungal topicals. In fact, the diet changes alone will probably do it but the topicals would be an added bonus. I'm currently trying to find some good topicals for this problem myself since I have had trouble sticking to the diet as I was not doing it correctly. Topicals would be oregano oil, tea tree oil, Nizoral (whatever this is). I've heard coconut oil works but that makes little sense as I've heard folliculitis can feed on the oil of the skin so I'm not sure despite coconut oil being an antifungal I wouldn't take the risk. I know what you mean about dry and oily skin. The folliculitis really tears everything up and leaves you with all those dry flakes it's really annoying. I wouldn't really trust doctors...they often don't really look into what is causing these things.

I've been using head & shoulders for my scalp and it seems to be doing a decent job. There are lots of antifungal herbs you can take along with probiotics which help keep the yeast in your body in check. Oh and the diet is the candida diet. It's basically a low carb meat/veggie diet with your main source of calories coming from fat. I'd suggest you try it because you sound like you're feeling a bit hopeless. If all else fails order some lufenuron. I bought some online but I just started taking it so I won't notice anything for a few days. Good luck with getting rid of this little devil!
