Here's my problem, I started dating this girl i met at University last year over the summer. We live 5 hours away so my only chance to talk to her has been online, usually at nighttime. I get up weekday mornings at 6:30 for work, and at the start of the summer I would go to bed at like 1, which was ok for me, but as time went on i started talking to her later and later, until its been closer to 2:30 now..

I have definitely noticed lately that my facial acne for the first time in a long time is getting kinda worse. Not terrible, just random zits poppin up. Which kinda sucks cause im goin to visit her this weekend. But blah nothin i can do about it.

Either way, are my 4 hour sleeps the cause of my uprising acne?

"Acne is not caused by a poor diet, dirt or an oily complexion. Factors that may make acne worse include emotional stress, fatigue, cosmetics, and drugs such as iodides and bromides."

I think its bad for acne.

Yeah, everyone is my family always bitches @ me that since I don't sleep @ or before 12am, my acne is going to/can get worse. I really don't know how much sleep contributes because I have SO MANY friends who stay up all night and barely clock in 3 hours of shut eye, yet they have no acne whatsoever.....and I'm talking about at least 10 people; I know everyone has different skin, but it's impossible that all 10 of them just happen to have good skin.

But I guess getting at least 7 hours of sleep is good.

well I can tell if im fatigued (feels like an emotional depressed state, where I dont enjoy anything that I love doing and just really feel exhausted enough to sleep)

or just tired (which doesnt cause me any break outs). When im fatigued, I usually end up getting a zit somewhere in the morning, or a break out.

So I really try to distinguish the two and work it out.

I have trouble sleeping. My acne is way better than before but I think a good night sleep won't hurt. I think your body repairs itself at night so doesn't that some how link to acne? idk nvm

Acne is not caused by a poor diet

This a classic myth. Stop misleading people.

As an acne sufferer, you cannot compare yourself to anyone else.

My friends can eat KFC for every meal, get no sleep, drink coffee all morning and sugarry alcohol all night, not wash, drink a gallon of milk and several chocolate bars at night and wake up with a perfect complexion.

Come on, you should know this by now, we operate ina different ball park.

It said it right on an accutane brochure my derma gave me 4 years ago, so you think its a typo?

Diet has never been proven to affect acne nor has it been disproven.

In my opinion, diet is DEFINITELY one of the contributing factor towards acne.

Yes it's never been proven but at least there are some people who can attest to this (real experiences/evidences). I wont be specific into details but diet especially high in sugar can raise some hormones and that specific hormone can cause or aggravate acne. So the bottom line is never disregard diet as your main culprit.

I think the quality of sleep is a huge factor in relation to acne, not necessarily the amount.

I always find that if I have a restless and stressful sleep, I wake up with new active acne.

When it comes to diet I have a varying opinion. I think SOME acne's are caused by diet, but not all. Mine certainly is not. I'm sure a healthy diet would help my overall immunity, but not acne in particular. For some it is purely diet though.

In my experience sleep is not connected with acne. I had very bad insomnia last summer, which went on for 3 months. Sometimes I couldn't sleep for days. I don't need to say I was also very stressed out because of it. BUT my skin was perfectly clear, no spots.

And now I sleep normally 8 hours per night and my skin looks terrible again! Maybe I shouldn't sleep :D

I think lack of sleep and unhealthy diets CAN contribute to acne but personally I've never noticed any correlation whatsoever - I have quite a lot of dairy in my diet (which apparently has very little nutritional value once we are adults) but I'm a sucker for cheese and milk! Anyway I thought I was lactose intolerant last year and completely eliminated dairy from my diet = absolutely no difference to my skin.

Just be careful because there's a lot of people on this site that have eliminated 90% of normal food from their diets (which is way to extreme for me!) but for some it affects their acne and a lot of them see results so good luck to them...equally there will be people making sweeping statements like diet doesn't affect acne and because there is limited medical proof they refuse to accept diet is a factor for others.

My advice would be to keep a sleep/ food diary so you can track how your skin is affected and maybe see if there's a pattern - just remember it's different strokes for different folks so get all the advice you can but ultimately something that works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa, it's just a process of elimination to see what does/ doesn't affect your acne.

It is. Sleep deprivation contributes to a number of health problems including acne. Like air and water, sleep is a necessary part of life. Not getting enough sleep affects two factors that contribute to the development of acne: inflammation and insulin resistance. These factors can throw off the bodys hormones and cause the overproduction of sebum which clogs pores and leads to skin eruptions. So if you want to avoid acne, don't let anything or anyone stop you from getting enough sleep.
