I've decided to treat my acne Scarring recently. As depicted, the scarring is pronounced, and is easily seen in pictures.
I'm not sure what kind of treatment would help best. The Scarring seems to be a mix of boxcar and ice pick scars. I have been using topical paulas choice BHA 2%, minimalist niacinamide, and cera ve resurfacing retinol. I have been using them daily for about 2-3 months now, and have had no reactions.
What kind of clinical treatments are normal for this type of scarring?
Should I go to an esthetician or Dermatologist?
What questions or things should I tell the person I end up working with?
Topicals don't do anything for scars really. I'd save your money and look into legit scar treatment.
What kind of legit scar treatment though? That's a good question and something I'd recommend 2 things for:
- Become accustomed to the various scar treatments available
- Get under the care of a really good scar specialist. Don't settle for anything less than total confidence that you've found the right person. And they should be able to show you before and afters of similar scarring to yours. Trust your gut and see as many docs as you need to until you find the person you think can help you out and get you results with a plan that makes sense. This might take some time, but it's your face and it's worth the time.
Best of luck and if you do get treated please share the results with us.
For boxcar and ice pick scars, the go-to treatments are usually things like TCA CROSS for the deeper ice picks, and subcision or fractional laser/microneedling RF for boxcars. Topicals help skin health but wont change the scars much, so seeing a dermatologist (ideally one who specializes in acne scarring) would be your best bet. Id bring clear photos and ask about a treatment plan that mixes different methods, since scars often need more than one approach.
