Hello all,
Last year I began Thermolysis Electrolysis to remove my beard as part of my transition. I did this because I had read many times over the laser hair removal was not a permanent solution and could make beard removal difficult in years to come. However, sadly in March of this year (2022) the technician I was seeing badly over treated my face, resulting in texturing around my mouth, and jaw. I noticed the damage almost right away and stopped electrolysis, which I have not been back to since. I felt a burning sensation which I tried to treat with Aloe and leaving it alone for as long as I could, but the scarring damage was done.
This has been extremely distressing to me, as prior to this, I had satisfactory skin. The scarring bothers me on a daily basis, and has made it hard for me to socialize and enjoy aspects of my life, to the point of depression and anxiety.
I want to have some sort of treatment on my skin to assist with the textural scarring. I have seen a few dermatologists in NYC where reside. One recommended RF microneedling, and the other didn't really see anything wrong (mind the latter was early in the process, and may not have seen anything due to swelling). I have done a few microneedling sessions through my aesthetician, but do not really see much of a textural improvement.
I would appreciate any recommendations here, as I am truly struggling with this.
Thank you so much.
I also don't see anything. It looks fine to me. But...you know your skin best and if you don't like it, I would say lasers might be a good option. For someone who just wants a nice textural boost, perhaps ablative fractional laser (but comes with a longer recovery time). Even non-ablative laser might help with texture (shorter recovery time).
Hi Dan,
Thank you kindly for the advice. I really appreciate it.
The skin is noticeably for textured, and I would like to do some sort of laser/texture treatment.
I am not sure which laser would be right for me, so even a point in the right direction is a help.
Again, I appreciate the help.
Honestly, your skin looks good and I wouldn't mess with it.
I'm 3 years into treating deep atrophic scars caused by a laser procedure that I could've done without. I never had any scarring before my treatments, just some redness from rosacea. I'd give anything to go back to the redness and not have huge craters on my nose of all places. Don't try to fix what isn't broken.
I get what you're saying and it's mostly textural and extremely superficial and it's not very noticeable and looks good to me. I get it that lighting brings it out so I know it looks bad to you when some sort of shadows or lighting hits those superficial areas (same with me because I have superficial but numerous textural issues) but in the end I don't think you should mess with it as superficial scarring that light could be worsened pretty easily.
If you have to try something maybe some light dermabrasion as a test in a small area first or a light peel but light peels are super temporary so I doubt you'd be happy with that. You could try a medium peel but it's hit or miss with some risks.
This is just a pure guess but you might want to try a light aggressive treatment on a small area and test to see if it improves, like light dermabrasion or some sort of lower risk resurfacing laser or a peel perhaps.
I just don't want to see you make something very light into something moderate so test something or do nothing. Microneedling is a waste btw.

What happened exactly?
