It's happening everywhere. And I mean everywhere. On TV, on radio, on printed media, on the Internet, even on this very forum. People continue to call skin discoloration, or hyperpigmentation, acne scar. WTF? Serius Lee?

Obviously, their notion of what a scar is vastly differently from mine since an acne scar for me is a crater that's there for eternity, period. I can't help but chuckle when I read "oh, I had this terrible acne scar and it took me almost 3 months to heal." Is that so, Missy? I've had mine for over 10 years and there's no sign that it's getting any better.

Yea I know what you mean. And I am pretty sure they do it on purpose.. Tough I am shocked that you haven't been able to heal your pitted car after 10 years..

My point was that, without intervention, scars don't heal on their own.

Yeah, it's completely ridiculous. I've been seeing this commercial for Clinique for some sort of bleaching cream, and they keep making the claim that it will "fade discoloration, even acne scars..." I really just want to chuck something at the TV when I hear that. The fact that even the moderators of this board are so ignorant to the difference that they lumped the red marks board into the scar board just shows how widespread this misconception is.

It really just adds to this belief that people with scars are lazy and aren't taking of their skin, because lay people just think that rubbing some Clinique onto your skin will fade acne scars. It must be true if a big company like Clinique has a product for it!!

Its so annoying, especially when you are looking online and see people moaning or telling you how you can get rid of them using things like lemon juice or whatever.

A scar is an indent on the skin, or even a permanent bump which wont heal. They may get better over time, but need to be treated.

A mark is the hyperpigmentation, which will heal.

These people who can't tell the difference between skin blotches (that's what they were called back in the good ol' days) and scars are only adding insult to injury to those who wear their scars every day like a badge of dishonor. Blech!

I completely understand your frustration. Red marks fade with time unless they are very deep in the dermis area. On the other hand, acne scars (indented scars) will never disappear with time unless you do something to stimulate regrowth, which is very difficult to do.

This is my third year battling against acne scar caused by cystic acne, but nothing is working. I would never trust/recommend other people to get laser treatments because they can actually worsen skin texture dramatically.

totally agree with OP on this. I find it very frustrating because its hard to really get a good picture of what treatments will work for 'true scars' not a red mark...

so annoying
