What other procedure have you guys who had derma tried before?

Also to those who have it done is it really that invasive?

Oursfan i see your point i've seen that article and it is pretty scary stuff, but i'm thinking that if someone not familiar with the procedure was doing it it's really dangerous, it's like many plastic surgeons offer dermabrasion but they probably have done it like 10-15 times you know, we can all have our opinion on the procedure me personally i am scared of it a good bit, but it seems like the best way to actually rid myself of most of my scarring other than masking it and having to treat it numerous times again and again.

I guess since i'll never become accostumed to having scars in my face it appeals to me, having scars in your face is not a good feeling.

1. CO2 laser: waste of money, left me with some scars, enlarged my pores.

2. Punch grafting: worked well to fill in ice pick scars. Had "spot" dermabrasion to smooth this area over.

3. Smoothbeam: 2 sessions. Caused me to have significant acne afterwards and increased the oil in my skin. I decided not to continue, I was afraid of the new acne causing more scars. bb_shock.gif

4. Lactic acid peels: good for skin tone and texture.

5. TCA Cross: on one ice pick. It has been about 8 weeks since this test spot and I can say the pit is not as deep, but the perimeter of the scar is wider. Probably would take another treatment to see the best results. I decided to go with the punch floats instead followed by dermabrasion.

Dermabrasion is a very invasive procedure that can leave you with significant problems if you are in the hands of an unskilled doctor. You heal very quickly and the results can be very dramatic. I know there is a lot of controversy about whether or not this is an outdated method of scar revision. I can speak from my personal experience and say that hands down it has been the only procedure that really made a permanent change to my scars. I can also tell you that I would not let anyone but Dr. Yarborough touch my face at this point. He has a very long history with the procedure, he uses the wire brush which allows for more precision and there are several people from this board who have first hand experience at his office. Just be sure to do your research and decide what procedure is best for you and above all find a skilled professional.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/dermabrasion-rst/

This is just a link about dermabrasion I saw from the Mayo clinic. It states dermabrasion is the BEST treatment for acne scars. From my reading the only thing dermabrasion can't be used for is certain types of moles, congenital birth defects and some scars from burns. Of course you need to punch float first with ice picks and then do the procedure. I think the 7-10 days downtime is usually about the same as a strong chemical peel, so in that way they are both invasive. Amnesiac, the article also states it's good for spot treating, which is what we need! I go in a week for mine spots, however, if they are still a little puffy Dr Y may not do them all in one visit. He wants to make sure they are at a good stage before doing them. He said my scars were still producing collagnase on the last visit. sad.gif

After serious consideration on dermabrasion, I finally made an appointment for consultation and punch flow with Dr. Yarborough. The consultation is on November 11 2004 at 9:15 am. I believe that is the first appointment of the day. Please don't laugh at the HUGE goofy Asian walking out of the doctor office. Ooh...now I am a little excited and nervous.

Becky recommended two hotels, the Hilton Inn and the Clarion Grand Petite. Which one do you guys an gals recommend? Are either of the hotel within walking distance from the doctor office?

Hi Steven

I'm going a week or so after you so I'd love to hear about your experience. Please keep us posted and good luck!

I'm staying at the Clarion also..... though I might opt to leave early and go home to a family members about 40 min away. I'm gonna stay close for the first 2 days for sure.

Dr. Y's office also said to call about a week before your procedure to find out if the McFarland center (located in the same building as Dr. Y) might be available. I'm hoping for my dermabrasion it is.

Hmm, I have a question for the people who's had dermabrasion or anyone who just happen to know, for that matter... How long do I have to wait after dermabrasion before I can start using peels(i.e. Lactic, Glycolic, TCA)? I'm thinking about doing some 30 % Lactic Acid peels, once a week, to help with my skin tone but I don't know how long I should wait.. If any of you have an idea, your opinion would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks smile.gif

I would wait a long time. I would also check with Dr. Y first for sure. Your skin is still remodeling itself.

Why do you want to do this? I would think dermabrasion is enough for tone--it better be, or I'm seriously rethinking having this procedure. bb_icon_eek.gif

LoL Emma.. My skin is smooth and everything, it's just that it's a little more pigmented where I had more scars.. I know, I probably should wait awhile so that it will heal all the way.. It'll fade on it's own, just that I'm too impatient to wait hehe.. Don't worry about it just cuz stupid me want to speed up the healing process Emma! I would do this again in a blink of a eye.. smile.gif

I just booked my airfare from NYC to New Orleans for $142. The room rate for the Clarion is expensive at $199 a night. I need to do some shopping around.

NYC to New Orleans is gonna have good rates... From Portland, Maine to New Orleans is like $330 (yikes~)

But when you're spending $4500 on a dermabrasion and 1000 or so on punch floats... whats another $100 or so right?

It's amazing that I'm gonna part with this much money and not even think twice about it. I get all worked up to save $0.30 on mac and cheese with coupons at the grocery store. hahah blink.gif

hey guys,

well really looking at my face i don't think i would need full face or even deep dermabrasion, i know Dr.Y is willing to spot test so that will decide if i go trough with this or not, does all dermabrasion have to be deep or does it depend on the scar?

It doesn't have to be deep. He can adjust the depth.

I have active acne breakout from time to time. After trying out the acne.org regimen (apply a LOT of BP + Lotion), I bring acne under control (1-2 breakout/week).

1) Is dermabrasion the right choice?

2) After dermabrasion, how soon can I get back to regimen?

I am worry about more breakout after dermabrasion without using the regimen.

Thanks.

It's hard to say if it the right choice for you without knowing what kind of scars you have.

I think you can resume the regimen in 4-6 weeks. bb_eusa_think.gif
