Does anyone have SD of the eyelids at all? That's one of the worst places I have it - the other bad place is inside my ears.

Has anyone ever found making changes to their diet helps? I am currently trying to go gluten-free (which is hard - so far I've only managed to reduce it a lot, rather than entirely cutting it out, but maybe I'll get there soon). Also, I have noticed before that if I cut dairy out I get a slight improvement.

Hello,

I came up the article: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/EP1294375.html and found this very interesting. Is there anyone who have experience with Ivermectin topical?

It is another object to provide a safe and effective method for the treatment of such dermatitis which will afford a substantially permanent relief therefrom.

The lotion or cream is then applied on a daily basis for seven days and, thereafter, one to four times per month on the affected area to prevent recurrence of the condition.

Over a period of experimental testing of about seven years upon about 100 patients in my practice in Ormond Beach, Florida, I found results of the above method to be both safe and remarkably effective in the treatment of otherwise stubborn conditions of seborrheic dermatitis. Further, where the patients have followed the proper regime of use of ivermectin, I have seen no recurrence of the condition.

Your dermatologist is right in that soap has irritants in it that can irritate your face, but I've never heard of it permanently worsening seb derm. I don't think it'll do anything more than temporarily cause irritation but I'm obviously no expert.

Some dermatologists, including mine, actually recommend sulfur soaps. I didn't find that sulfur helped much at all, though, but it's worth noting.

Some people have also found relief thru... bare with me on this, using Head & Shoulders on their face. However, I use the Pyrithione Zinc version (some claim that using just P Zinc without it being a shampoo helps too). It's too early to tell if it's helped the seb derm, although it can temporarily eliminate trouble spots, but it's absolutely helped with my acne.

If you've been dealing with it for ten years you've probably come in contact with these, but it's worth noting the more scientifically backed options: Ketaconazole, Protopic, and Elidel.

Hey thanks for the reply Someguy328. I just remembered tonight that I posted in here and I am glad to see I got a response. Never tried that soap but all the shampoos he gave me like T-gel, all that are similar to it don't work. Maybe I will try the Head & Shoulders on my face. Sounds a little bizarre but then again, my dermatologist told me to put wet Vaseline in my hair.. :surprised: Not sure about all those names you mention I think I definitely used Ketaconazole though. I have only started seeing a dermatologist since February 2008 though despite having the problem for roughly ten years. Another question, do you find your sebderm worsens if you shower everyday? I tend to shower once every other day..not sure if I should maybe change this regimen.

I find I have to wash my face and around my ears twice a day, and my hair once a day (usually - occasionally I can get away with missing a day, but it isn't ideal for my SD to do that).

Funny you should say about the vaseline, as I've heard that before from someone who found it a big success!

I have seborrheic dermatitis too and I don't know what to do. Right now, I've just been leaving it alone - I haven't been using any harsh cleansers or creams. I only wash with Cetaphil and then apply Cetaphil lotion after shower. It seems to keep it from getting worse, but it certainly has not been getting any better. The doctor prescribed be desonide lotion and it seems to work well in the beginning, but it made my skin look funny after a while, so I stopped.

I don't know what to do. I'm tired of going to dermatologists. I wholeheartedly feel that the medication prescribed by the doctors caused me to have this seborrheic dermatitis. I don't want to go back to a dermatologist for another useless medication.

Does seborrheic dermatitis go away? I've had it for 4 months now and it kind of reached a plateau - it doesn't seem to improve.

First acne, now seborrheic dermatitis - only bc i was trying to get rid of acne. I'm tired.

Pretty much the same exact experience I've had, almost down to every detail. One thing I did recently was stopping using anything for a while to see what would happen and while I didn't break out, the dead/dry skin was absolutely excessive. I ended up washing my face with a very gentle scrub and proceeded to scrape the dead skin off with my fingernails. Not the best method but I was desperate and frustrated. This left my skin very red and irritated, so I applied aloe vera gel on it. It was certainly irritated but it was a pretty thorough manual exfoliation and it actually didn't cause any breakouts. I also hate using BHA/AHA on my skin. The next day my skin actually looked great and the texture was back to being smooth with minimal to no flakes. Although my hyperpigmentation/redmarks still looks bad and the damage is still prevalent from the past, I prefer it to having a thick layer of dead/dry skin on my face. It's been like 4-5 days since I did that and I've been using diluted apple cider vinegar and aloe vera juice to moisturize.

I've read that ACV can kill the bacteria/yeast that may occur in seb. derm. My skin is certainly not as flakey as it was, but unfortunately I think it's coming back and the layers are building up again. It looked really good a few days after I did that but it seems to be returning. I'm not sure what to do to get rid of this for good. I believe that product decisions in the past most definitely gave me SD. I never had anything CLOSE to this problem before using harsh products. I'm worried I've permanently damaged my skin. I need some relief and I'm gonna keep doing this regimen with the occasional exfoliation and a good diet see if the ACV can help fend off the SD.

While I don't really condone doing the manual exfoliation method, as it can be somewhat irritating, I realized something. If I could just "level the playing field", meaning getting those layers of dead/dry skin off permanently then I could use a combination of natural products and a good diet and my skin could finally look good again. The problem with the layers of dead/dry skin is that if you use products, they simply don't penetrate deeply because of those layers, in fact they seem to sometimes buildup and leave a film. It's a known fact that dead skin interferes with product absorption. I feel like whenever I thoroughly exfoliate and get my skin on that level playing field, that things like aloe vera/ACV penetrate my skin and work extremely well. After about 2 days of using the ACV/Aloe combo my skin actually looked really good and the flakes were minimal. In fact, I would probably stop using products all together if the dead/dry skin wasn't a problem. I don't even breakout anymore. The problem is, this level playing field only lasts about a week then the dead/dry skin comes back with a vengeance, so those products never fully get a chance to do their thing unless I keep exfoliating and even then it doesn't completely take care of the SD, it's temporary relief. I just miss having my skin be able to exfoliate on it's own, like it did 2-3 years ago. It was fine, I don't know why I started abusing products. Does anyone know a permanent way to kill this bacteria, or whatever the hell it is, that causes this face "dandruff".

I have had sebhoric dermititis for the past 22 years. I have found nothing that helps for more than a day or two. I feel like a freak! I have red patchy scaly skin all over my face. It itches and burns. I am trying to find a job but who is going to hire someone with this condition? I try to cover with makeup but it does not cover it.

heya, does that argan oil really work?

i went to a doctor todayand he said i have sebo D, but im not sure if its what i have.

in the 1rst year that this appeared, i had flaky skin, but then it went all away and never came back ( redness stayted though ). Went to many different doctors and they all said different things, first apparently was eczema so i used nizoral, then apparently was rosacea so i used something i cnt remember now, and now apparently its sebo D and they told me to use something, not sure of the name.

I think doctor said it was sebo D coz i told him that about 10 days ago, i got some redness on my eyebrows and cheeks and bit on the side of the nose and only today disappeared ( i had to be this 10 days at home coz i was too embarassed to go out )... I HAVE NO IDEA how this crap

happened though as in the 7 years that ive had this redness, this flakyness never happened ( apart from the first year i already said ).

my face never flaked and it never itches or anything...i just have a little bit of redness on my cheeks, thats it..its not that red its like pinkish i guess. But it bothers me alot because altho im a guy, im very very vain, i love to look good.

im gonna keep praying to God that this goes away forever! onlyGod can help at this point.

please reply to me if that argan oil works for redness

thank you

Just wanted to add my two cents:

I've had SD for about 5 years and in that time, have tried everything. Head and Shoulders, Nizoral, Zinc Bar, sulfur, even steroid cream (NEVER USE THAT ON THE FACE!!!!! I learned that the hard way.)

Anyway, what has worked pretty well for me has been a combination of apple cider vinegar (diluted 50/50 with water), followed by jojoba oil. Jojobal oil is antifungal and non-comedogenic. I apply both products once a day at night. For those whose nothing has worked, I recommend trying it. It's cheap and non-toxic.

It's kept me clear about 90% since I discovered it. I hope it helps someone else.

Has anyone tried a blood test for food allergies/intolerances? I've cut out wheat, dairy, anything spicy, yeast, peanuts, fruit and just about all sugars from my diet as well as trying just about everything on my skin that has been suggested on this thread yet the symptoms persist.

I am almost certain that I have an intolerance to wheat and dairy products as I cut those out of my diet a few years ago and my digestive/fatigue/immune system issues have really cleared up since then and I have had some improvement in my SD/acne since then also. So does anyone think its possible that some other food intolerance is the major source of my SD problem?

I am contemplating getting a food intolerance test done here in Australia which tests for 271 foods, spices, preservatives etc but costs $850. Before I spend the cash to get this done can anyone share their thoughts on the connection between SD and food allergies/intolerance?

Much appreciated.

personally, i can see the connection, but rather than spend the money, keep a food journal and monitor your SD flareups in connection to food. corn syrup and dairy does it for me.

Hmmm, I don't know, I guess my scalp is generally more irritated the day after I don't shower. It's not exactly a walk in the park the day after I shower either though. The whole Vaseline thing just seems a little bizarre to me but hey, this disorder is all about trying new treatment methods. I tried it but you end just having extremely greasy hair and it didn't seem to settle the flaking much.

Ive had sebhorreic dermatitis of the scalp for 13 years and it began when i dyed my hair and must have been allergic to it.

For a long time i thought it was dandruff as it was so itchy and left white flakes all over my shoulders. I tried using all sorts of dandruff shampoos but they made it worse, and various tar shampoos.

By the time I found out what it was (a hairdresser named it - i had never heard of seborrei dermatitis before) I had a thick layer of crust on my scalp. The doctor told me I had to put oil on my scalp every night and put a towel over the pillow case, until the build up to dead skin could be teased away.

Once that layer was dealt with the skin was pink underneath and i used Betnovate scalp solution which helped alot and Neutrogena coal tar shampoo. I continue to use these products to this very day, except I can get away with using the coal tar shampoo just now & again, & more frequently at times when it flares up. My doctor keeps giving me 'Bettacap' which is a cheap version of Betnovate but even though its the same ingredient it doesnt seem to be as effective.

I recently found out I have seborrheic dermatitis. I'm getting very frustrated because I've been to the Derm two times already, and nothing he gave me has worked. My skin doesn't get the brown flakes anymore but if I let the dead skin build up, I probably will. When I wash my face with a soap or something, it rubs any dead skin that might be there and my face is left looking red and irritated. If I wash with just water and I don't try to rub any deadskin off (if there is any) then the dead skin will just build up, but it's not noticable unless wet. Does anyone know what I could do to get rid of the redness?

It seems like something that might work for one person might not always work for the next.Personally I've found that using a small amount of plain old selsun blue diluted with 10 drops of water works very well for me.If you scroll up you will find my previous post with step-by-step instructions on how I use it.The trick is that when you find something that works, stick to using it on a regular basis.Consistency is the magic word.I try to not use it too much...but not too little so the SD starts coming back.

I forget if people went into this already in this thread, but has anyone tried getting their hands on CROTAMITON (aka Eurax in the UK)? There's a few studies floating around that show the scabicide working well against seb derm, suggesting that certain forms of seb derm could be caused by gram-negative bugs rather than yeasts as previously thought (or perhaps certain forms of it are getting confused with other conditions). Hopefully someone from the UK can try it out as it's over-the-counter over there; I'm gonna have to somehow convince my derm to prescribe it to me over here in the states.

In the past year and a half with seb derm, I've tried countless remedies to no avail, including multiple dandruff shampoos and antifungals. Only thing that's worked for me is immunosupressants like Protopic, which unfortunately is western medicine's way of shoving my problems under the rug :/

I had SD on the sides of my nose and in the corner of one of my eyes for a few months, as well as along my hairline. After reading some things to try to get rid of it, I decided to use hydrocortisone cream.

So I got some from the drug store and I've been using it for three days now... My SD has almost completely cleared up. I'm gonna keep using it for one or 2 more days and then stop, and hopefully it doesn't come back.

Hey Everyone, I'm new here same story...

I want to share a little of my struggle and a little of my success.

Like many of you I've tried all the shampoos.

Suffered some hair loss

And gone the natural route.

At about 15 I was diagnosed with SD and again at 18 so I'm pretty sure that's what it is unless it's psoriasis mine isn't dry skin because of have sd on other parts of the body. I've scratched at midnight till it bleed and I've contemplated shaving my head and eye browls. I've even cried myself to anger over it most of you know there's rarely any sleep with this condition.

I take a vitamin with 2000mcg d-biotin and 600 mg of msm in it called Countrylife maxi hair I'm on my second bottle and I haven't noticed anything but for those who have had success with these supplements maybe they will help.

Right now I'm back on nizoral which I can't stand but the last time I took it it was 2 percent and very harsh but didn't help just hurt. This time it's 1 percent and still not helping I just wanted to try once more. Enough of my fails attempts

SUCCESSES

Desonide Lotion - IT WORKED on my body (no flaking, cleared scars completely, and you'd never know I had a skin condition) BUT it is a steroid so I no longer take it but I'm thinking of starting back. It's NOT the best or safest idea but if you have insurance and don't mind using something you'll probably have to take forever and may stop working go for it but to echo what one person here and my derm said "it's not for the face"

Chagrin Valley Bars & Shampoo Bars

I found these I think in late 2008. I stopped using sulfates and had some success with that. I also mostly only use natural products on my hair, scalp, and face.

I used this type after visiting their site and watching youtube videos. The shampoo bars kept my scalp at bay taking my selsun blue / suflur 8 flare frequency of every 1-3 days to 4-7 days. They don't contain sulfates and I like them a lot. If you use them on your scalp massage it in your hands not on your hair I made that mistake. They have great facial bars too one is tea tree and neem which can be for body, face, and hair so economical. They help a lot but don't fix the issue.

These bars are acidic but if you're using acv as a toner and shea butter or for me melted shea butter or jojoba oil as a moisturizer all should be well. It's my facial regimen unless I get some olay oil free foaming face wash it's gentle and does well too.

For sd on the body

Unrefined Shea Butter - After I stopped using desonide my scars returned I started a shower regimen about 4 months ago of equate body wash (I know equate has bad ingredients but it's one of few store bought bodywashes that actually keeps my skin smooth in the shower while cleaning and no pain from the sd scars even dove couldn't do that dove made my sd flare) a regular skin moisturizer followed by shea butter to lock in the moisture. Shea butter also is said to heal eczema and scars.

Equal parts of coconut and tea tree oil and a little lavender oil I haven't tried this on my face but I have tried coconut oil and tea tree oil alone on my face no big results. I put this on my scalp after wetting it. Leave it for about 45mins and shampoo. It keeps the itch away flakes not so much.

I know my eating has a lot to do with it if I go without lactose or gluten for a while I can automatically see a difference in my scalp and face. But so many foods have it to where its hard to avoid.

Water helps too not sure of why but when I drank 65oz a day or you weight divided by 2 I saw great results but didn't stick with it.

Sorry this is so long but I just wanted to offer any advice I could.

As for acv its good to drink and good for smooth the roughness from sd for jojoba oil its said to breakdown dried sebum not sure how when it's the oil that mimics sebum but many people have success with it and use it as a growth aid to regrow hair ruined by sd. And someone asked if hairloss from sd is permanent based on my research no BUT based on my experience there may be a yes. Just depends on if it came out on its own from sd or if you did aggressive scrubbing on some areas like I did and have kinda of stunned the folicles.

I'll shush now and thank you all for your recipes and success stories it's good to know I'm not alone in this

can someone tell me specific problems they've had with using steroid creams on the face?

it really works for me in a small dose 1x/week to alleviate symptoms when they get really bad. then right around that same time the following week i have to reapply to keep everything in check.

i know regular steroid use would clear up the problem but i'm trying to keep my immune system active while i try other things to find a lasting, manageable solution.

thanks

I have tried dozens of different treatments. The absolute best that I've used, which I've been using for like 10 years, is Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion. It cured the cracks and patches, but I still have oily skin. I highly recommend it. You can pick it up in CVS. Let me know how it goes =) It has been a life saver 4 me.
