Looks like no one has posted on here in a while, but I'm hoping someone can help me out. So for the past two months I started noticing how the skin on my nose got very sensitive and would flake off, scab up again, and flake off. I got tired of it and made an appt with a dermt., now mind you this is the first time in my whole life I went to a doctor with skincare problems so I haven't been using any other medications on my face.
The doctor told me I possibly have seborrheic dermatitis, she said she definitely saw it on the side/crease of my nose, which never really bothered me, wasn't too bad, but I've never read anywhere if it's possible to have like ON your nose, in the center, not the creases. She prescribed Desonide Cream with 3% Sulfur in it, after reading stuff about Desonide making people break out, and sulfur not good for you, IDK if I should try it?
Please, ANY help would be great, and I know this is very materalistic of me but I have a date tomorrow so I'm crossing my fingers I can get some sort of an answer soon. Thanks!

I'm not sure but isn't Desonide a steroid cream? If it is from what I hear you should absolutely not use it. Supposedly, although I know very little about it, steroid creams are pretty awful to use on your face.
There's a clusterfuck of opposing opinions on how to treat seb derm, but I would probably advise you to just try to get a better dermatologist. Unless they were born in medieval times, prescribing steroids for your face is pretty unforgivable. You could talk to your dermatologist about ketaconazole, and either elidel or protopic. Those are probably the biggest three things dermatologists use as treatment at this point.
i had blepharitis (basically seb derm of the eyelids) from a very young age, like 8 or so. this turned into pretty bad dandruff as i got older, then late high school and college cystic acne and seb derm of the face. every cream, shampoo is just simply like a temporary bandaid. ive seen about 6 derms, same thing over and over. consistent diet is the only thing that has put both into complete remission. not a complete cure as it will come back upon a high carb diet, but the closest as its gonna get
Hello, I'm new to the board and did not read through all the posts so I apologize if this question was already asked. My dermatologist said to never ever use soap on my face as it will worsen the condition. Has anyone else been given that advice from their dermatologist? He gave me some Oxistat cream which has not been all that effective. I'm turning 19 in a few weeks and I've had this skin condition for probably about ten years.
Your dermatologist is right in that soap has irritants in it that can irritate your face, but I've never heard of it permanently worsening seb derm. I don't think it'll do anything more than temporarily cause irritation but I'm obviously no expert.
Some dermatologists, including mine, actually recommend sulfur soaps. I didn't find that sulfur helped much at all, though, but it's worth noting.
Some people have also found relief thru... bare with me on this, using Head & Shoulders on their face. However, I use the Pyrithione Zinc version (some claim that using just P Zinc without it being a shampoo helps too). It's too early to tell if it's helped the seb derm, although it can temporarily eliminate trouble spots, but it's absolutely helped with my acne.
If you've been dealing with it for ten years you've probably come in contact with these, but it's worth noting the more scientifically backed options: Ketaconazole, Protopic, and Elidel.
Hello, everyone.
I've been reading this thread and have decided to join and contribute my 2 cents (I'm a male)
I've had SD for about five or six months now. I'm not sure exactly what triggered it, but I suspect that it may have been a soy protein drink that I used.
I have virtually no acne; no blackheads, pimples, and very clear, smooth skin, but the SD seems to be the big problem now. I have seborrheic dermatitis directly under my eyebrows (it used to be just one part of one eyebrow and for some reason it spread), and under the arches. I don't get much itching, but sometimes it's red and I get occasional flakes.
The thing is, my eyebrows are extremely thick. They are dense, thick, and wide, well-defined, and lustrous; however, they have become a bit thinner due to the SD, which saddens me because I used to get complimented on my eyebrows. I typically keep them in line and groomed, but I notice several patches where hairs have fallen out due to the SD (thankfully, they seem to be growing back).
The problem is that it is very difficult to put creams on under my eyebrows, because of how dense and thick they are; every time I try, I pull out hairs, and it is very frustrating (I am considering getting a brow transplant to restore them to their original fullness).
-------------
As for my "regimen", I wash them gently with T-Gel a few times a week. I use hydrocortizone only when there is a bad flare-up; I also use a salicylic acid moisturizor. As for my diet, I just eat whatever I want and it doesn't seem to affect the SD. However, I do take a multivitamin supplement.
I'm considering trying benzoyel peroxide; any luck with this?
Also, some things you may want to try are mint leaves tea. You can probably get mint leaves from any organic food store. You brew it just like you brew tea, and you drink it; it's supposed to be very effective at promoting a healthy bowel and fighting yeast and bacteria. It seems to be doing well for me.
I can't believe there isn't a cure for this. IS ANYONE working on one? The SD has really made me sad and upset, and I really, really want a way out of this.
Thanks everyone! And keep up the fight.
hey agent x, i TOO HAVE SD ON MY EYEBROWS. Mine i believe is worse though. You said you had some thinning with your eyebrows? 3/4 of both of my eyebrows are so fucking patchy, you can literally see through them and i have massive bald spots. You thought your eyebrows were thick and lustrous? Mine were literally as bushy as they come and now they are thinner than most girls that wax their eyebrows... I am very depressed and i literally hide myself from the world. I have controlled the itchyness using ACVM but i still have the flakes/dandruff on my eyebrows and worse of all, the hair keeps falling. This all happened in a course of a year.
FML
I don't think it's permanent unless the follicles get damaged. My hairs are growing back; the problem isn't so much whether or not they will grow back, but how to stop them from simply getting pulled out again, which is the frustrating bit.
Has anyone heard of Loma Lux Psoriasis? It's supposed to treat SD as well. I've read alot of good reviews about it.
Hello all!
Thought I'd share my experience with SD. I'm 41, male, and have had SD for over 20 years. It's only on that area between the nose and cheeks, and in and between my eyebrows. What's finally worked for me is this: wash with Cetaphil, gently go over the area with a wet cotton ball to exfoliate, and while the area is still wet massage in a couple drops of organic jojoba oil, and pat dry with a tissue.
That's it. No more itching or scaling, and the redness is significantly reduced. It's been a couple years now, and haven't even had a single flare up. It's something I picked up from Linda Sy's Vita Oil treatment (now discontinued. It was basically just jojoba oil.)
This is after years of using hydrocortisone daily (stupid, I know). Then more years of using dermatologist-prescribed desonide lotion (don't get me started on doctors). DON'T USE TOPICAL STEROIDS. It DID thin my skin, and induced rosacea on my cheeks. Strangely, I also now have rosacea on my forehead, though I never had SD there. My SD area will always be a little pink because of the thin skin there, but it's not red anymore.
I should also mention if I didn't use Head & Shoulders on my scalp, I would have dandruff like you would not believe. I used to use TGel (coal tar shampoo) with moderate success until my early 20s then switched to H&S, and haven't had a flake of dandruff since. Seriously - I'm surprised by all the people who have said you need to switch dandruff shampoos or they lose effect. That has not been the case with me.
For the Rosacea I tried numerous prescription things (Finacea, Metrogel, a couple antibiotics, other creams/gels I can't remember the names of) with zero results. But then I found just washing with Cetaphil and putting on a thin layer of tinted moisturizer/sunscreen works fairly well. At least people have stopped asking me, "oh, did you get a little too much sun?".
For the record, I eat and drink like crap and take no supplements.

Hey John,
Im wondering when you started using jojoba oil if it instantly started working for you or did you have to give it some time. My story is similer to your except I still havent found something that works. My problem is mainly on the sides of my nose. Im on day two with the jojoba oil and really wondering if its going to be enough to stop the iflimation that occurs. Its been awhile since you made this post so hopefully you might respond
i found this board helpful and would just like to share what worked and didn't work for me
i have a moderate combination of SD, acne, and rosacea. most of my pustules and redness are in the nose/cheek area and a bit above the left eye. i have some serious dryness on the forehead, temples, along the hairline, jawbone, and in my ears as well. i have pretty bad burning/itching/flushing when untreated.
i had been treating the acne with benzoyl peroxide & clindamycin and oral bactrim DS. that just dried everything out and let the SD/rosacea cause big problems. i found that small applications of a topical steroid otherwised used for exczema (clobetasol) took care of the itch/burn and some of the redness, but knew it wasn't a good/healthy choice and wanted to get off it. i was using metrogel on the nose/cheeks with really no results other than a bit of a soothing effect.
stopped the clobetasol and immediately there were awful flareups. went to milk of magnesia applications and virgin coconut oil for moisturizing. kept on the bactrim and metrogel and the redness continued at a ridiculous level but the itching/burning subsided some.
started biotin @ 1000/day & fish oil. not too expensive and nothing negative yet. been on those for 2 or 3 weeks.
doctor switched me to minocycline from bactrim and im waiting for that to do anything. i have been doing the head and shoulders face wash and i have switched to cetaphil cream in the tub which is great.. the coconut oil was leaving my hair and clothes a bit greasy and required lots of re-application. between these two topical things, the itching is gone and the redness is way reduced.
i have stopped using my acne topicals because i just cant handle the dryness anymore, especially after having moved to a dry climate and winter is coming up. the acne is definitely getting worse but along with the pustules and nose redness, i hope the minocyclene will eventually kick in and take care of these things.
so to sum up, for me:
good: cetaphil in the tub, head & shoulders as a face wash, clobetasol (but it is not good for your face at all)
eh: virgin coconut oil
not good: drying acne meds, metrogel, mik of magnesia
undecided but hopeful: vitamin supplements, minocyclene
im sure im leaving stuff out but will respond with more info esp if anyone has questions. and thanks again to everyone who posts here.
Hey guys, I've found something is working splendidly for me!

I went out and bought some Psoriasin gel (you can get it at Wal-Mart for $5) and it has worked wonders so far. I have had virtually no symptoms. No flaking, itching, or redness. And it's pretty easy to apply.
Psoriasin is intended for Psoriasis although it says you can use it for SD as well. It contains coal tar, but instead of a shampoo, it's something you apply on your skin directly once or twice a day.
I'm so happy!

Do you just apply it at night before bed?
I have the same SD on my eyebrows. Its been about 6 months, but very noticable the last couple months. Im getting new bald spots in my eyebrows every week or so, with a few hairs falling out per day. Right now im trying to use natural remedies like coconut oil. Not sure if its helping yet. Im going to dab some olive oil too before bed. Ive tried castor oil and nizoral shampoo. They weren't of much help. I miss my thicker brows!
Hello all!
Like many of you, I suffer from SD. I have since I was about 15/16 (I am now 21).
I have been to many dermatologists, and I have tried many different products and home remedies and so many other so-called "cures". The only thing that really worked so far were those products with cortisone, but since I found out they can be dangerous / have some mean side effects, I stopped using those products altogether.
My SD has been getting worse year after year, especially since my SD "crisis" are triggered mostly by stress (I get stressed really easily), and the older I get, the more problems I have, so SD is now a constant in my life (and face). Unfortunately, it is so bad that I had to have surgery twice already to remove meibomian cysts from my eyelids in less than 2 years (because of the blepharitis caused by my SD, my eyelids are almost constantly inflammed). My face looks red and inflammed most of the time, and mainly my forehead looks awful. It's not really noticeable because of my bangs, but it's there and I hate it. Especially since I always had amazing, unblemished skin and many people used to come to me and tell me how I had such fair and pretty skin and how much they were jealous... Now my skin only looks great about 50-60% of the time, if that. Well, except for last year.
I wonder if the climate has got something to do with SD (maybe the humidity?), because last year I went on an exchange program to Germany and I stayed there for 1 year; and guess what - my SD was completely gone for those 12 months! I was so excited because I honestly thought I was finally "cured", but when I came back to my home country just a couple of months ago, my SD was back after a few days.
Now, here is my question:
Has any of you actually tried using Aloe Vera for your SD? Did you have any results?
I was reading this [Edited link out] the other day and I had an Aloe spray at home, so I decided to try it (like I tried about 1 million things before...). I didn't notice any difference during the first 2/3 uses but damn after just 3 days (1st day I sprayed my face 5 times; the 2nd day 3 times; today only a couple of times) my SD is completely gone from my face! I'm not getting any excited because my SD might be going away naturally the way it does after a SD crisis, even though it happened really quickly this time. But damn, if it was the Aloe, than it really worked! I wish I had taken some photos, it's unbelievable! My skin hasn't looked this soft and even in weeks! I will stop using it now because my SD is gone but once I have a new crisis I will make sure to test it again. I mean, wow. I'm so pleased right now. *tries not to get too excited*
Sorry about my english.

I just bought the Psoriasin stuff too though I got the ointment... seems to have cleared up some redness and dead skin but it has left my skin very dry for a couple of days, even though the skin didn't really show it. Just wondering if I'm using it wrong, because it seems to actually do something and that is a rarity so I am not so hesitant to drop it.
Yep skin still looks good, a little burning sensation but not bad, and yeah its obvious I used too much to begin with since it says you can apply 4 or so times a day, but with me the stuff was still visible on my face for like a few days. Lets hope this is a good and study treatment.
Everyone else should look into it as well.
Just found this thread and read most of it and thought I should chime in.
I developed a pretty severe case of SD about 10 years ago. I was 18, anxious to get rid of my mild acne and had limited access to the internet. So when my derm prescribed me Accutane I didn't know much about it but I was totally psyched to try it! Anyways long story short it was the worst decision of my life and I now spend my weekends trying to build a time machine. Anyways, Accutane gave me severe SD across my scalp as it butchered my hair. Eventually it started showing up on my face, mainly the butterfly shape across my nose and cheeks. Over the years I neglected treating it as I spent most of my time reading pubmed trying to fix my hair loss. Having given up on that I've focused on SD recently and thought I should post a couple things I've learned.
For me diet is a pretty big factor in the redness on my face. Dairy, sugar, wheat are my main culprits.
I've been applying raw honey on my face every second day for 3 hours and that seems to help.
I've been compiling a list of supplements that I'll be ordering to combat this problem. One potentially interesting supplement would be a probiotic with Lactobacillus paracasei:
[Edited link out] (have to scroll down a little)
Something else I will be trying is a combination of polyunsaturated fatty acids, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Methionine:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1831657?dopt=Abstract
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5290809.html
Also how Biotin deficiency relates to abnormal Polyunsatured fatty acid metabolism and dermatitis:
http://books.google.ca/books?id=bNHj0PLvoz...ufa&f=false
So basically my regimen will probably be:
-B vitamins, particularly Biotin. Some Biotin I will take in capsule and some sublingually.
-Methionine
-Vitamin E
-Selenium
-Evening Primrose Oil
-Probiotic(possibly kefir as it has the strain I want)
-Continue honey
-Avoid food allergies
Hey Guys !
I'm new to this site but have enjoyed reading about everybody's problems lol.
At least I'm not alone. SB blows.
My face has been flaking from my chin (really bad) , around my mouth, under my nose, and my forehead. Under the flakes my skin appears red, especially after a shower or anything that removes the flakes.
I'm sick and tired of the splotchy redness, incessant flaking, and tight dry feeling.
Has anyone else tried DermaDoctors Born to be Mild face cleanser ?
I tried it once and it burned pretty strong. Does that mean it's working? Should I keep trying it ?
It at least slowed down the flaking, but the redness always looks terrible.
I'm also currently trying anti-fungal clotrimazole and Dermarest Medicated Psoriasis Cream 2% sacylic acid.
Is Jojoba oil good for SB ? I can't ever find a good moisturizer.
That's a lot of questions, lol. Thanks for the help you guys.
I've had SD for about 8-9 yrs now and have tried all kinds of things to keep it away. For the longest time I've used a night cream(has almost a vaseline like texture) over night when I sleep. It worked better than most creams because it didn't dry up or rub off as easily. It seemed like if I could keep the dry skin at bay,the redness would go away too.Well lately that hasn't been working for me as much. And about a week ago I started getting dry,red skin along my eyelid.I made a doctor appointment because I thought maybe I had pinkeye. He checked it out,we talked and got on the topic of my SD.Apparently this eye condition and SD were related and he recommended using selsun blue on my face.
Here is what you do...First off wash your face with warm water using no soaps, then dry your hands/face..Take one hand and put 2 drops of selsun blue in it.Then put the other hand under running water and with your finger tip add 10 drops of water, and dry that hand off. This will dilute the strength of the shampoo and give it the right consistency. Now mix it together and apply it to the areas the SD effects you.Let it sit there for about 5-10 minutes(I usually put it on and brush my teeth, then rinse it off).Do this one per day, every other day,for the first week or two. Then once the SD clears up,repeat this process about twice per week max.Afterwards your face might feel a bit weird, but that will go away pretty quick.
Don't use any special skin creams,lotions,etc....the whole idea of this method is so we won't need that stuff. --> It's all about good personal hygiene. <-- My face/scalp looks and feels way better now but if I stop doing this for a week...my SD will be back in full force. You really have to keep at it.By the way..you might not see instant results on day 1...but after 2-3 times of doing this you should see big improvements.I really hope this works for you as it did for me.Good Luck!
Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
Hey, i've been using sulfur soap for the past 2-3 months. it really controls it quite well. my face doesn't flake dead skin anymore and the redness is somewhat gone BUT as of the past week it has been failing me. the redness is back on my face and its killing my confidence.
i have no idea why it just stopped working...
i think the soap's potency has weaken or perhaps my SD has evolved..
im going to order a new soap bar.
