Has it been well established that Biotin worsens acne? I'd like to know before I try it.

I don't know if it's been scientifically established at all, but several people have reported their acne getting worse on it.

My acne got pretty bad on the biotin. Even after I cut it out and just used MSM and Zinc, those two give me a bit of acne (although not nearly as much as with the biotin).

It's definitely a trade-off.

Hi to all. New poster here. I've been reading this thread for a while and thought I'd join up and post something.

I've had SD most of my life, since I was a young child in fact. Doctors have been completely useless. The first GP I talked to about it told me it was caused by dandruff falling on to my face and irritating it. Other GP's have just prescribed the standard steroid creams. Nothing ever worked.

Chances are if you have SD you have a weak immune system or suffer from vitamin deficiencies. A lot of research into this condition seems to point out a definciency in the B vitamins especially B6, B2 and Biotin.

After doing some research I started taking Brewers Yeast 4 days ago and the results have been great. Brewers yeast contains lots of the B vitamins plus selenium and zinc etc. All those are good for your skin. I take 4 tbsps per day of the powdered form of Brewers Yeast. I tbsp in morning, 1 at lunchtime, 1 after evening meal and 1 at bedtime.

The results have been great considering that my SD had previously resisted everything that I threw at it. My facial SD was I'd say about 80% clear but after 4 days on Brewers Yeast I'm now 98/99% clear. Amazing results with it, started clearing my skin up very quickly indeed.

Try it out, you might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

NB I do eat a healthy diet and drink only mineral water as well. I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have and If it helps some of you out it'll be worth it. Good Luck.

Thanks!!! I will of course keep you informed of my progress over the coming weeks/months.

BTW To consume the 4 tbsps a day of Brewers Yeast I mix it with mineral water and drink it. So far so good!!

Guess what? In a very uncharacteristic way, while visiting my health store, I bought a pack of brewer's yeast. Usually I research products weeks if not months before I buy something. I'll start taking it tonight. I've never tasted yeast before, but one of the good things is that it contains a lot of protein (43%).

That was the most disgusting thing I have ever taken in my life... and believe me, I did try many things and I am not someone who complains. Moonset, how the heck do you eat this stuff? It was like drinking vomit and I'm not exaggerating at all.

Sorry to hear that. Did you buy the 'bittered' (ie natural) Brewers Yeast? That's supposed to be the most potent form of it. You can buy it debittered however although in that state it is said that it loses some of it's goodness. It's the debittered stuff that I'm taking as I can't find the 100% untampered with stuff locally. If I can get my hands on I will be taking it. If you don't like the taste of the powdered yeast you can buy it in capsule form now as well. The debittered stuff tastes okay to me.

You can find info on the benefits of Brewers Yeast easily enough online so it might be worth having a read at some of the articles on it.

please help!

I have some seborrheic dermatitis around my nose that make its itchy and red in the crease and around the nostrils

I tried gently washing that area in the shower with selenium sulfide shampoo and the next morning it was so red! Now two days later, I still have about twice the redness in that area (around and under my nose) than I had before

What should I do? Is there a way I can treat it that wont kill my face like this?

Hi everyone~

i wanted to share with you guys something that actually helped my seborrheic dermatitis greatly. The best thing about it is that it is all 100% organic & natural, so you don't have to worry about putting toxins into your skin or anything that may thin out your skin (such as hydrocortisone cream! don't use it :o ) Anyways, i was pretty sick of trying to fix my diet for seborrheic dermatitis. i was eating all whole foods, but after like 3 months, saw barely any results. so i did a little research and found something called argan oil. argan oil is extremely rare and is found in Morocco. It is known as 'liquid gold' since it is so amazing. here is why argan oil rocks:

- contains high percentage of essential fatty acids & phelnols such as vitamin a, omega 6, omega 9 fatty acids which provide antioxidant benefits. we all know one way to treat seborrheic dermatitis is to increase essential fatty acids in our skin.

- like i said all natural. and it contains no chlosetrol.

- helps restore natural ph of skin. unnatural ph is also a reason for seborrheic dermatitis.

- regulates sebum on oily skin & reduces extra oiliness (biggg plus for us.)

- increase elasticity & tigthen skin.

- neutralize free radicals & revitalizes cell functionos

- reduces skin inflamation & skin irritation

- anti-bacterial, anti-microbial. a huge contribution of seborrheic dermatitis is the fungus and bacteria that grows on our skin. this kills these microorganisms.

- another plus that does not have to do with seborrheic dermatitis. it treats acne & scars, so don't be afraid of putting oil on your skin. it won't break you out. also treats eczema & psoriasis.

- highly moisturizing. i'm always afraid of putting lotion or cream on my seborrheic dermatitis, even though i have tons of flakes. this is because the more lotion i put on it, the redder it gets. this solves my problems. also, i have eczema (wonderful skin eh?) and it cleared it up overnight. see, i have this dilemma. i always get huge pores or pimples on my nose, yet i can't use a cleanser because i've tried thousands of cleansers, and they all give me eczema flares on my nose since my nose is so sensitive. well with this oil, i clear the acne on my nose WHILE treating the eczema. so it basically hydrates skin while reducing extra oil

so i decided to try it. as great as it sounds, i was still initially a little scared to put oil onto my seborrheic dermatitis, because one reason we have seborrheic dermatitisis overproduction of oil. i didn't want to add fuel to the flame. but i tried it anyways. for the first two hours, my affected areas were really oily, but less red. when i woke up the next day, my seborrheic dermatitis looked a tad less red and a tad less oily. i feel like if i continue with this argan oil, my seborrheic dermatitis can be controlled! And so i used it nightly as a night treatment. I continued this method & to much sucesss, my seborrheic dermatitis has dramatically improved.

So where can you buy argan oil? Sephora. It is expensive there, and I am sure that there are other places to purchase argan oil. But I did research and the other places I could find, they did not supply 100% organic argan oil. It was infused with other chemicals (some online stores supplied organic argan oil, but i'm skeptic about those sites). Sephora supplies 100% pure argan oil in a little dropper bottle. I use around 2 drops a night, one drop on each side of my nose, where my seborrheic dermatitis is. You can buy a 0.5oz bottle for $14 and a 1.7oz bottle for $48. Because it is pricey, I recommend buying the travel sized bottle first to see how it works out for you.

Here is the link:

Good luck & I hope i helped!!

Bigapple, try the Green (or White) tea/ White (or apple cider) Vinegar method.

Alice Kim, did the argan oil cure or dramatically improve your SD even when you don't apply it?

Am interested to hear about the argan oil, as I use it on my hair (and think it's great stuff). I am a fan of the oil cleansing method for my face (although it does seem to affect my eyes to get them oily), so I will give the argan a go for my face. :)

Hey Sebastian. I haven't stopped using the argan oil since I discovered it. However, since it is not medication, I do not think my results will go down after stopping it for a while. I will stop the argan oil for 3 days, and let you know what happens. I have only used the argan oil for 5 days, but the improvement in my seborrheic dermatitis is incredible. I honestly think it will be cured in maybe a month or so. Basically, there is no more extra oiliness on my seborrheic dermatitis. The redness can only be detected if scrutinized! Hope I helped!

Awesome! Glad I could help! That was something else I forgot to mention to the readers of this board. Apart from seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, acne (i have tried seborrheic dermatitis on all the affected regions by these conditions and it has helped all three), it is also awesome for nails & hair! Let us know how it goes for your seborrheic dermatitis :)

Another update, even though the conversation seems to have moved on from the whole Biotin ordeal...

I stopped using the Biotin a while ago (as I said in a previous post), but I continued using MSM and Zinc for about 3-4 weeks total time. I stopped because I was getting cystic acne from these products. When I went off of it, the bigguns disappeared. Overall, pretty happy with the experiment. While I was on the supplements, I noticed that my flare ups were limited to once every ten days or so, and in the last week on them I never had random mid-week flares.

I've been off of them for about a week now, and although I didn't realize it immediately, overall redness and scaliness has decreased a sizable amount. I still have good and bad days, but on good days it is 100% unnoticeable that I have seb derm, and 5 out of 7 days are typically good days now (although now I get to focus on my acne scars and current acne :/).

As a sidenote, I've been practicing super hygiene the past week as well, replacing bedsheets and pillowcases daily etc. which could be confounding the results. Someone suggested that my problem might be mites instead of seb derm, and I noticed that my dog's feet look similar to pictures online of dog's with demodex mites so I've been having suspicions. Gonna get a test done on that in a few weeks.

Okay so here is a important question.

I have never had an acne problem and then about 6 months ago - BOOM - I broke out

I have been recovering from that and over the past month my derm has me on doxycycline and epiduo. I use purpose cleanser and always wear sunscreen.

On the sides of my nose (around the nostrils) my skin is red and more easily irritated. Sometimes it is not as noticeable due to shadow from my nose, but there is a red patch by each nostril and on one side it is up on the side of my nose. It hasnt really changed at all ever since that acne breakout.

My derm said it looks like it could be seb derm and wants me to start washing once a day with sumaxin (9%Sodium sulfacetamide, 4% sulfur).

I used to have dandruff but havent had itching or scaling anywhere else. There isnt really any scaling around my nose at all - just the redness (itchy at times)

Does this seem like seb derm and if so, will the sumaxin help the redness?

Has anyone ever considered tea tree oil for seb derm? I tried a test by NOT using the protopic on one part of my face, and I was able to get it to subside by putting a few drops of tea tree oil into my hands as a washed my face with soap in the shower.

Will continue to see if it consistently works or if that was just a fluke or not. I tried using it first when I heard tea tree oil is used to kill mites, although it also helps against acne, redness, etc.

I go in detail a couple posts up but basically, I stopped Biotin because it made me break out in cysts. I continued zinc and msm, and it successfully increased the number of days between flare-ups but the seb derm was definitely still there and on bad days is pretty awful, making me have to rely back on the protopic yet again for flare-ups.

Tea tree oil got rid of the last flare-up (really surprised at that) but that's far from a confirmation, I'll try continuing its usage to see if it can fight off the next flare-up or if I'll have to run back to protopic again. I also have an appointment on monday and am hoping to get a test for mites done to rule that out as a possibility.

I know I'm posting a lot in this thread, but I'm really REALLY gung-ho on eliminating this seb derm this year. And the more and more I try the more and more down I get that nothing is really working.

Tea tree oil really does help with acne and redness, and I'm really quite confused how it got rid of my last flare-up, but like clockwork seven days later (I flare up without fail every 7-10 days) I flared up again, which is today.

My face is covered in weird blemish red dots and is back to being flakey and dry. Like a heroine addict, I'm back to using protopic.

You know, it'd be nice if western medicine TRIED to, you know, put some effort into learning about what seb derm is, instead of tossing antibiotics and band-aids at patients. Oh well, still waiting on that monday appointment.

Anyone has bad reactions with warm water? When I wash with mild water my face is crystal clear but with warm to hot water not so much
