I realise it's never been scientifically established that Accutane causes scars from spots that would have normally healed, but in my case, I've been on it three times in my life and these are the only times I've ever developed any acne scars, and it's always from the worst spots I had when I started the treatment. It's like starting the treatment just temporarily halts my ability to heal, then my healing ability returns somewhat in a few months of treatment, but by then the damage is done.
I had accepted this as price I was willing to pay, last time I got some laser scar removal done after the treatment ended. But this time this one particular scar is just too much to wait until the end of the treatment, it's on the ridge of the crest of my forehead and is slightly hypertrophic so it sticks out even worse, especially under indoor lights, and because it's an angry red it just looks like a permanent, active cyst even though its been there for 3 months now. I wear hats whenever I can because this one scar is just making me look ridiculous.
I'm looking to treat it with whatever I can that doesn't have any known conflicts with Accutane, since even if I stopped taking the Accutane I'd still have to wait months to treat it anyway so I might as well plow through the rest of the course. So far I'm using silicone scar sheets every night and just keeping it moisturised with Aquaphor, but does anybody have any other ideas? I've bought some GHK-Cu peptide to use topically, but that's a bit of a hail Mary.
Also, I'm a man, I've never worn make-up before but I'm genuinely considering trying it, maybe at least something to reduce the redness. I've read that green cover stuff somehow reduces redness? I'm clueless but any advice would be appreciated.
Anything that prolongs the inflammatory response could lead to scarring, and Accutane is pretty crazy. It can make so many random things happen. There isn't much evidence that it does caused raised scarring, but I tend to believe you! It can cause so many things.
Here's an article on isotretinoin and raised scars.
Here's all the info I have on raised scars. But as far as what to do while you're still on Accutane, it's hard because you're not supposed to do most of these while you're on it. In fact, doing some treatments might increase the risk of more scarring if you do it while on isotretinoin. But it's totally worth asking a scar specialist and talking it out as far as what you can do in the short term other than what you're already doing.
And here's what you can do naturally to help reduce scarring, but it's not going to be magical.
