Ok so, I was prescribed dianette which is only prescribed for acne, but on my file they said they had to put is was sexually active. So now they want to put me on accutane and I discovered I have to take birth control, even though I'm completely abstinent. I do not feel comfortable taking pregnancy tests or blood tests to see if I'm pregnant when there is no chance I will be! Does anyone have advice on this? I'm tempted to not take the birth control that will be prescribed, but it would be better to avoid it in the first place.
Hi...i am on accutane now and am female and my derm does not require birth control even though I'm 19, in college, and have a boyfriend so i think you should be ok. Physically i am unable to use birth control so it wasn't even an option, but she said as long as i don't get pregnant it is fine. Birth control is really not good for you in the long run anyways so i would really plead with the doctor to not push it on you, especially when you are abstinent. Just explain to your doctor the whole situation how they put sexually active but you are abstinent and they should let you because theres a place in the pledge program that you get registered for when starting accutane that you can put abstinence as your form of birth control. my sister also took accutane and unlike me, she used a birth control while on it and she cleared up and had great results, but about a year after taking accutane she got married and wanted to start a family so she came off her brith control and her skin went crazy again and got almost as severe as before accutane so I personally would not recommend it.
as far as blood tests and urine tests go, you're not going to be able to escape them. The reason for this is because they don't only test to make sure you're not pregnant, but under law they are required to test and make sure your liver and other things in your body are okay while you take it since it is an intense drug that can potentially have bad side effects. for a few months, its a small price to pay to ensure you're staying healthy. good luck with your decision and I hope clear skin comes your way soon

I heard this was the case but my dermatologist seems pretty set on it
The blood tests are fine with me, it's just the other stuff... it's rather invasive and the thought makes me uncomfortable if you know what I mean
