About isotretinoin and stunted growth

Hey,

I wanted to hear your guys opinion on this topic. I live in Germany and I asked 6 different dermatologists (one of them even wrote a dissertationon isotretinoin use in teenagers) about this possible side effect and all of them said that accutane doesNOTstunt growth in teenagers at low doses (a low dose means 10-20mg daily, ~ 0,2mg/kg). All of them said that this side effect only occurred in patients who took very high doses of isotretinoin for a very long amount of time (e.g. 60-80 mg for 5 years). I also read some literature on this topic (for example Acne and Rosacea: Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Treatment by David E. Goldberg, page 25, line 5) and every book on this topic confirms that stunted growth only occurred in patients who took high doses of isotretinoin (1-2mg/kg) for a long time. So I think, those who took low doses of accutane shouldn't be worried about this side effect. What do you guys think?

Just avoid the medication at all costs. It can cause so many horrible long-term side effects that will affect your life forever.

Avoid, avoid.

Hey CantyScore,
Thanks for your intelligent question and approach of seeking professional opinion and peer reviewed literature! I'm sorry that I can't read the thesis you reference in German and the book you link to is not available to me either.
Clearly though, a lot of consideration has been given to the stunting of growth in teenagers. That's not an allegedside affect I had been aware of before. As I understand there has been growing interest in lower dose Accutane treatment regimens, with many researchers reporting lesser side effects in general as a result, so I tend to accept what the derms are telling you. Dryness and blood noses were the only side effects I personally experienced on Accutane.
My own son has acne returning now after initially clearing on doxycycline so we are probably going to be considering Accutane when we next see our doctor. He is already about 5'10" and destined to be over 6 feet tall so I wouldn't be worried for us.
Good luck with your decision. I think you can trust in your doctor and the papers you have read.

For example go on ' repairing long term side effects of accutane'

Stunted growth is listed as a side effect on the leaflet as well as in literature.

It may or may not be a rare side effect but that doesn't mean it won't be a side effect for you.

Are you not worried about the potential sexual side effects, persistent joint pain, mental health issues, long term depression, losing your motivation for life.
There is no such thing as a good medicine - all medicines have side effects and no one can predict how a certain drug will effect the individual.
Accutane is one of the worst drugs in the world - stunted growth should be the least of your worries.

Google accutane/sexual side effects - (David Healy) and accutane depression. Go on forums and look on youtube.
Just make sure you are fully informed and don't listen to the doctors, listen to the people who took ACCUTANE!!!

I really hope you are trolling. Just look at the side effects of Aspirin or other simple medications people are taking every day. Ibuprofen for example can also cause impotence..
I think most of the people here are overexaggerating this whole topic. 'all medicines have side effects and no one can predict how a certain drug will effect the individual.' I totally aggree with you on that but where would we be if no one on this planet took any medicines because of some extremely rare side effects? Life is all about decisions and sometimes you have to take certain risks. I mean, acne also causes severe mental health issues like depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, etc..
The people I talked to who took accutane only reported minor side effects like dry skin, nose bleeds, dry eyes and I think you don't have to worry about most of the side effects you listed on a low-dose therapy.

I wish I were trolling but I sadly speak from experience. I have given you ideas to research and a lot of what you will find is scientific.
Do you think PFS victims are exaggerating? They were mostly never warned about sexual side effects, not before 2012 anyway. Also even now sexual side effects
are not listed as being permanent!
Dr Healy is quite credible you know.
I have nothing to gain. I admit to being biased again accutane but with good cause.
If side effects were listed as possibly permanent and sexual side effects were also listed I would not feel the need to comment.
You should be thanking me for making you aware of the side effects that are not listed in the packet leaflet.
I just believe that anyone who takes accutane has the right to be informed.
