Is my dosage for Accutane too low? What did you start at?

So my dermatologist finally prescribed me Accutane, and I have moderately severe acne that scars. My medicine is supposed to be ready to be picked up tomorrow after 3 pm, but I'm worried because my derm prescribed me only 20mg/day and i'm 17, 5'4.5, and 117 pounds (female). Do you think if I call him in the morning and ask for a higher dosage that they will change this month's from 20 to 40? Or is it too late? :( I don't want my acne to come back once the course is over, and my derm said I will be on it for 5 months..

I guess there's no harm in checking with your Derm to put your mind at rest, but they would have prescribed the dosage they felt appropriate. I actually had my dosage reduced before I started my course because the derm felt it was too much. Don't fall in to the trap of convincing yourself that increasing medication will bring about a change quicker, accutane is a serious treatment and you don't want to over do it.

He probably plans on increasing your dosage in the future if he said you'll be on Accutane for 5 months. I'm on 20mg daily and I'm staying on this dosage throughout the whole course, but my derm told me I'll have to be on it for 6 to 8 months. He probably prescribed you lower dosage for the first month to see how your body will react, because of all the side effects. I'd say he's being careful about it and is taking care of your health, but if you feel unsure, just call him and ask him :)

do NOT increase your dosage. you will regret it later in life. 20mg is plenty. worse comes to worse, you will be on it for a full 6 months. if your skin doesn't clear by then, he can opt to keep you on it for an additional month.
