About 3 years I went on a course of accutane for about 12 months which I've now seen is longer than most. I started at 20mg and eventually gradually got it up to 50. In the end of it my skin was pretty good but now years later im still getting some acne and my skin is not clear and still bumpy. Although it is not severe i feel frustrated it came back as I did my course and the course of many other pills and prescription creams and gels before accutane. I am thinking my dermatolagist may not have given me a high enough dosage at the time to kick it in the bud completely but am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or advice? I'm looking for a new treatment or if going back on accutane would be an ok option?
Sadly, Accutane does not necessarily cure acne for good. Sure, some people's acne will be cleared to the point that it's kept away by your everyday wash routine, but for others it can return. Taking a higher dose might not have made any difference, and infact just caused you more discomfort at the time. I'm similar to you in that my acne gradually returned, and after a few years I decided I needed another treatment. Initially I wanted to take another course of Accutane but, like you, my acne was not as bad as it was before, and I was told that a dermatologist wouldn't prescribe accutane again. I was offered Differin gel, which did help, and using that there were many times when my skin was completely clear. However, it wasn't perfect, so after a year or so I switched to Epiduo gel which I still use, and it's pretty damn effective for me.
Although your acne has returned, the Accutane has obviously had a lasting effect as you say it's not severe. Initially I was a bit down that I couldn't take another course of Accutane, but looking back now I'm glad, and I found an alternative that I can just easily apply to my skin instead. I can recommend both Differin and Epiduo, so ask your derm if one of those would be suitable. Good luck.
I am in the same boat. I was on accutane for about 11 months, my dermatologist it would clear up my acne for life. After taking on the harsh regime of the medication I was acne free for awhile and now about a year off I'm still getting breakouts. Much like you, thankfully it isn't as bad as before Accutane but it's still extremely frustrating. I've yet to consult my dermatologist about this matter to find another alternative..but I can't say I would fully trust his knowledge at this point.
I try to use a Micro dermabrasion scrub when I wash my face which seems to help but it feels like in scrubbing my skin off. I'm sorry I don't have any advise for further acne help. It just wanted to let you know you're certainly not alone!
