This is my first post on acne.org and as you can imagine (from what I have read on previous posts) I have been researching Accutane over and over again. I have read so many forums and watched about 100 youtube channels and I am still undecided.
I have had moderate acne for about 15 years now (I am 25). I have taken antibiotics, topical creams, different pills, had £3,500 worth of laser treatment and peels - it just keeps coming back!
I am worried about Accutane for many reasons, I am not sure I can handle the initial breakout - my acne makes me feel like crap and I don't want to feel anymore self conscious than I already do and be in more pain with cystic acne.
I am also quite small (50kg) so do not want to go on a really high dose and get a massive amount of side effects.
I also have a huge amount of acne scarring/redness - will Accutane make this worse?
I would really appreciate if people could, give me their stories on Accutane and whether or not you regret taking it thanks
I only started to break out this year but after trying a few things I went for accutane purely because I can't deal with my skin how it is. It's up to you if you go for it. You could try and see how you get on? I think you've paid your dues with the acne. Time to put it to bed. Good luck with whatever you decide
I'm on week 10 of accutane on a very low dose (20mg/day and I'm 6'0 84kg). It has been working wonderfully regardless. Skin is looking good and pimples are getting very rare.
Will accutane make your redness worse? Yes. My skin is flushed (looks like rosy cheeks) and im on a low dose. As for the initial breakout, think of it as sacrificing a moment of sadness for long term happiness. Besides, if your doctor can start you out on a low dose you won't have a bad initial breakout. Mine was very mild although I do accredit that to my 8-9 months of tretinoin and azelaic acid use prior to accutane.
As for my recommendation:
Just do it. I'm the happiest I've ever been in the last 3 years because of accutane, and I'm fully aware that things are still going to get better! Sure dry lips suck but as I've said before, temporary suffering is worth a lifetime of clear skin.
It's not 100% guaranteed that you will get an initial breakout, I didn't my skin just got better. Often a dermatologist will put you on a lower dose to see how your body reacts to it first. Accutane is worth a shot, if you go on it and get some bad side effects simply come off. Accutane has been one of the best things for me, I had pretty moderate - severe acne on my back, chest, and face and I'm 3 months in to my 5 month course and I only get the occasional pimple now. The rest is just scarring that will fade overtime. In my opinion Accutane is worth a shot, I messed around with other prescriptions for years that where just a waste of time and money.
