I just started my Accutane 3 days ago, however my dermatologist prescribed me at 40mg twice a day, which is equivalent to 80mg a day. I have the generic brand of Accutane so I eat a fatty meal before taking the medicine. Is this too much to start off with? I am 178 pounds male, 5'11 ft. I noticed that my skin has been getting really oily and it looks kind of red, is this normal? I am using Cetaphil Cleanser and Cerave moisturizer.

Do what the Doc tells you too. He knows best. I am not going to say that it's too much, so hopefully he was correct.

I hope so too, I head it is uncommon for males with my height and weight to be on this dosage. However, I have acne but it is not crazy severe that is why I am just worried why I am being prescribed this much. Shouldn't my skin get dryer though? I know it only been 4 days but it just gets really oily right now, my face is more oily than it was before.

You won't see results for a little while longer, even on a high dose. I don't think your dose is ridiculously high. He's being aggressive and with Accutane, it's really 'go big or go home'.

Thank you for your reply, this makes me feel a lot better.

Make sure to pay close attention to any side effects that emerge, and don't be afraid to bring any of them up with your dermatologist (or even ask for a lower dose if you feel it would be best for you). Also try to eat healthily to make this whole process easier on your body. Finally, remember to keep your health in mind in general.

Hope everything works out for you!

Thanks for your reply, it really means a lot to me. Yes, I have actually change up my diet a lot. Since I have to get in fatty foods before taking my 40mg in the morning and at night. I usually consume healthy fats from either salmons or avocado and olive oil. I also cut out a lot of my simple carbs in order to prevent weight gain. I began to binge on vegetables a lot more now and have at least 1-2 fruits a day. Also I am taking supplements, Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B-Complex, Fish Oil, Garlic Supplement (to prevent an increase in cholesterol) and Biotin. I hope am on the right track, I am actually pretty stressed out on Accutane due to its potential side effects to my body. I hope I have made the right decision.

How bad is your acne, if you don't mind me asking. If you're that worried about taking Accutane, then in my opinion you shouldn't be taking it (or at least be taking it at your current dosage, you could always ask your dermatologist to lower the dose which would greatly reduce the chances of any complications). It's important to remember that this drug is purely for cosmetic reasons, and that you should never prioritize cosmetics more than your health.

With that being said, if your acne is pretty bad or disfiguring, then asking for a lower dose might be a good option; however, if it isn't too severe, maybe putting Accutane off for some time and trying different treatments would be a better option for now (you can always go back to Accutane if things don't work out, but dealing with bad side effects after treatment might not be so easily dealt with). But in my experience, doing anything that isn't mandatory/life saving that makes you super stressed isn't worth doing in the slightest.

I don't want to make you stress more about this, but I do think it is important to weigh in all factors when deciding to follow through with this medication. I don't know your whole story, so I'm assuming you already have, so I guess im just giving you a reminder to think about all of this.

I had acne since I was like 12. It was really bad and I always got made fun for it. Then it slowly faded away, when it did came back when I was around 13, I used proactive and it actually works for about 3 months and it really helped my self esteem. However, when I got to high school it got really bad and I was playing football at the time. I got acne on the temple of my face, and being outside sweating and training for hours got it to broke out even more. To make things worst I was wearing a football helmet like all the time due to football training, it causes the acne from my temple to bleed every time and I remember it was slightly infected. I went to see a dermatologist and it slowly went away but I was left with scars that will only go away with lazer treatment. From then I started to get mild acne throughout my face, and it left me with scars as well. I am now 18 and my acne did improve but it will not go away. I live a pretty healthy lifestyle and I am very educated when it comes to nutrition, yet nothing seems to work. Ive tried other acne antibiotics, they work for about a couple of months but they only reduce the acne I get, not cure it. I finally went to see a dermatologist, he told me that I should go with Accutane. I did very in depth research about it, and I was too scared so I waited off. Now I realized that it is time for me to go on it, I have 1 more year left of community college before I transfer to the top University of my state. When I leave home, I want to have clear skin to enhance my social life.

I must ask, I realized that I was out of the sun for like 10mins a day for the past 3 days with Cerave moisturizer without any SPF, could this be the reason why my skin is red? Did I get sunburned? I touch my face and it is kind of warm and it the redness look like I am blushing or something. Is this a side effect or is it a light sunburned?

What I bolded indicates that it's most likely a burn. So that should clear up within a few days, but if it doesn't, be sure to get it checked out.

Regarding your main paragraph though, it does sound like you do qualify for Accutane, but just make sure to take caution and keep a close eye on any symptoms that may appear. Also, if you are still willing to try other things other than Accutane, I'd recommend looking in to Cod Liver Oil and supplementing that for about two months and see what happens, but DO NOT take this while also taking Accutane. It works kinda the same way as Accutane, but is much safer (but obviously can't "carry" the same guarantee Accutane does for it to work against acne).

Thanks friend, my doctor office opens tomorrow and I am going to give him a call. Did you happen to take Accutane as well?

No problem, hope everything is going smoothly :).

I did, but only for 2.5 months. I didn't react well to it at all, which is honestly part of the reason why I say to take extreme caution when taking this drug.

Oh I see, I hope your acne journey is going well. If Accutane does affect me too negatively, I will mostly likely stop it as well. Health and longevity is more important to me than curing acne.
