Roaccutane Journey - 19/F

I've just finished a 3 month course of Roaccutane and thought I would share my story, as before I started it myself I read as many stories as I could.

I struggled with semi-severe acne from the age of about 12 until now. It started on my back and progressed to just about everywhere; an extreme flare-up on my face over the past 6 months was what pushed me to go back to the doctor, after repeatedly being brushed off with 6 month rounds of antibiotics which did nothing for me.

Acne has affected every part of my life possible, as although I could cover my face with makeup I never wore any tops that revealed my back and was extremely conscious of people touching me, as I even had flare-ups on my shoulders and arms. Even now that I'm clear I have to fight my reflex to recoil when people give me a friendly touch on the shoulder; while I had acne I had some weird perception that I was dirty or infectious!

After being a referred to a dermatologist the experience was plain sailing for me. I'm from the UK and was under the impression that I would be waiting at least a month from my initial appointment to receiving the medication; however, I received a prescription the same day after a quick blood and pregnancy test. I was told to start on 20mg a day and increase to 40mg as soon as I felt ready - this was the dosage I was to stay on throughout my treatment. For reference, I'm 5'0 and around 110 pounds. The rest was history - I had a nasty IB, but honestly I was clear within 8 weeks (my back/body acne cleared first).

I've decided to include a female-type FAQ on Roaccutane as I ran into a few things during my course that my derm/google didn't know the answer to:

  • Don't bother fake tanning. Personally I found that no matter how much you moisturise it won't sit right on your skin.
  • For those that bleach their hair, getting my roots done was a bit more unpleasant due to my sensitive scalp but I informed my hairdresser about what I was taking and she kept a good eye on it. I ran into no problems there!
  • I continued to wear acrylic nails - I can't really tell if the accutane has made my nails any weaker or if it is just the acrylics in general.
  • There are a few topics already on this one, but I thought I would post a clearer answer - I read posts advising to avoid new piercings during accutane and also posts that others had no problems. I personally had three new piercings during my treatment and had no issues, I found that the less I handled them the better as the skin is more sensitive, but I found that my healing times were the same.
  • Alcohol - I had numerous nights out and attended a festival, all of which included drinking. I am completely not advocating binge drinking while on the medication, and I did take a break from taking it at certain times (e.g. the festival) however found that the medication didn't affect me at all regarding alcohol, after reading that perhaps I would get drunk faster or fall ill.
  • Makeup - loads of topics regarding this! Rather than going out and buying a load of new makeup to deal with my suddenly dry skin after being excessively oily over the years, I just threw on a really thick moisturiser (Nivea, in the blue tub) under my foundation from day 1. Worked a charm. I couldn't afford to buy a load of a new products for my skincare, but soon realised I didn't need to; a good (does not mean expensive) moisturiser for your face and lips is enough. I use baby wipes with micellar water to remove my makeup since anything else feels a bit harsh, and I was told not to cleanse my skin.

There's a load more things, I'm sure, but most of which are already covered on the forums. Of course, with everything here YMMV; I thought at least something on here might be useful for someone. I decided that I would enjoy my time on accutane and not put my life on hold - there were some down points (like having a massive breakout the night before the festival, typical!) but overall I was excited for my skin's progress and it all still feels very surreal.

TL;DR - Survived Roaccutane, had great results. Keep your heads up. I'm sorry for the wall of text! If anyone wants any more/specific info I'm happy to oblige. My skin still has LONG way to go, and I plan to post a real before/after as soon as my main scarring has faded ;D

Would you say your IB resulted in worse acne than you've ever had?
I'm starting roaccutane in a couple weeks and am a little nervous about this part.

I was reading your story with acne and it is almost the same as mine. I only have one question for you. Do you have any red marks left on your face? If so, do they fade fast or do you treat them with something? I can use any tips. Thank you :)

Hi, What exactly did you get told about not cleansing your skin? Thanks!
