I have suffered from acne since I was 16. I was on Tazorac Cream 0.1% for 4.5 years. I am now 22 and I was switched to Tazorac Gel 0.1% back in October 2015. I still have a nose covered in blackheads and a forehead covered in close comedones and I break out frequently. It is mentally exhausting to deal with the constantly changing state of my skin to be honest. My skin looks as if I always have a sunburn but its worse because the color is blotchy and uneven looking to top it off. Sometimes I will have I day or two were my skin looks okay and have only a couple active acne marks. Or like this week when I have several cysts on my forehead and several inflamed papules on my cheeks. Like most people with acne that care a lot about their appearance, I feel like I have tried everything under the sun without success. Since starting the Gel I have noticed my skin has this glossy plastic look to it. To counter the irritation I tried washing my face only with water in the morning before moisturizing. I got excited for a few day that my face was less red but within a few days I had dozens of new blackheads and whitehead erupt. I could spends hours typing up the OTC products and regimen i have tried but I will spare you so here is my current regimen I have been on since October.
My current regimen is as follows:
AM:
Wash with Cerave foaming facial cleanser,
Tone with Thayers witch hazel (which I spray on, applying with a cotton ball irritated my skin too much)
Moisturize with PCA Skin Clearskin cream.
Whenever I know I am going to be in the sun longer than a couple minutes I apply sunscreen which is EltaMD UV Clear Broad-spectrum SPF46 Facial suncreen. (I hate that it adds to the oiliness and I feel like it is making me breakout but its ingredients are the best noncomedometic formula could find).
Throughout the day my face progressively becomes a red and oily looking mess.
PM:
Wash with GloTherapuetics Polishing Cleanser
Moisturize with SebaMed Clear Face Care gel
Treat with Tazorac 0.1% Gel (When I apply the Tazorac I use a pea size amount and dab several times all around my face and then wet my fingers before spreading it around otherwise I cannot apply an even layer unless I use more gel which I know would just cause more irritation.)
***all of these below I would take 2-3 days off of Tazorac before doing
I've tried 30% salicylic acid peels a few times but ended up with good looking skin for a day and then peeling and severe breakouts shortly after.
I recently tried a few months ago doing Aztec healing clay masks once a week. Skin looked great for a day or so and turned into a breakout shortly after.
I am forever done with facials as well I get those every so often and end up with severe breakouts as well.
I am lost to what is going on, its been 5+ years on this stuff and all my doctor says is this is the strongest stuff and there's no other options unless I take oral meds, which is one thing I won't do.
Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks in advance!
First of all have you always been religious about wearing sunscreen since using it all those years?
What was the strength of the cream you were using?
I honestly haven't heard much good reviews about Tazorac , it's possibly time that you maybe switch to a different retinoid seen as though it's not really working for you.
