I'm in my fifth month of accutane and i'm not gonna lie, it's been a challenge, although not (yet anyway) as catastrophic as i feared, it's still not something that you can take unnoticed. The side effects are harsh but definitely liveable, in my case.
My worst side effects were initial headaches (which cleared in two weeks, huzzah), back pain (which is apparently normal), dry skin on face, almost constant rashes on hands, and the driest, sorest most vile lips you could envisage. When I saw this whole 'dry lips' thing mentioned constantly i really didnt realise how such a little thing can affect your life so massively. I'd say every few minutes i think about my lips in a given day, because they are so bad and i'm on a constant mission to reduce them. So here's what i've tried:
blistex lip cream: nah
Norwegian formula lip balm: nah
nivea lip butter: nah
blistex daily lip conditioner: nah
carmex: you having a laugh?
lush honey trap lip balm: aromatic as hell but fairly useless and a bit of a sensory overload when you have to apply every 15 mins
elizabeth arden 8 hour lip balm: better than some and not irritatingly sticky, but i still woke up chapped as f****
carmex plus pink tint: i actually like this, but it's only for the first few weeks or when you're having one of those rare adequate-ish lip moments. The colour is so lovely and it feels quite sealing. But when you're really peeling (almost always in the latter stages) it won't look right or be hydrating enough
lanolips and vaseline: Good. Best when applied over something that reduces swelling such as argan and tea tree oil together. If your lips are having a moment then there is just nothing that wil work. I had one week where i could have cried at the pain of my lips and nothing at all helped. But usuallym lanolips or vaseline does help somewhat with the pain and crispiness.
and the one i like the most: Blistex relief cream. It feels good. I hate the feeling of vaseline, it just freaks me and my lips feel like they're trapped in a lift. Blistex relief cream feels cool and soothing and does not have that awful sitting on the surface awkward feeling. Granted this is not gonna cure your lips, and i think vaseline is perhaps better as a nighttime salve in that lips are softer the next day, but for pure comfort (and being quite a good hydrator) i like this most.
For facial skin:
Lush ultrabland: Without a doubt the best product i have happened upion throughout my accutane trauma. I love this stuff. And never get tired of using it. It is ultra sensitive, ultra nourishing, easy, expensive for the amount (sadly) and leaves you glowing as much as one can when all the moisture has been sapped from one's skin and soul. Its an oil and beeswax formula that you take your makeup off with using a hot flannel. It's so expensive (7 pounds for about two or three weeks worth) that ihave made myself a dupe (creative i know) using evening primrose oil and raw honey as the base with a dash of argan oil and rose water. It's not as smooth to apply as ultrabland but will last longer so a bit cheaper for me this way. And skin still comes out looking quite radiant
argan oil: i've always loved it and while nothing seems to cure my dryness to the point that makeup applies flawlessly, argan oil is pretty good for hydration and radiance, as well as being very beneficial for anti ageing.
olay complete + radiant glow: a really good way of putting some life back in to the look of accutane treated skin. I was really impressed with the glow (and reasonable softness) i got from this moisturiser. There were days after my skin cleared mostly when i would go out wearing only this, so if your skin is so peely that you are unable to use foundation (we've all been there :/) this might help you to feel a bit more confident.
For hand rashes:
Nothing works
It used to be that i would have reactions to products, like sanitizers or even just new lotions. Now it is just a permanent state of being. I always have a rash of varying degrees.
All in all, every bit of discomfort is worth it. And I pray to God that my skin is cured forever good luck to you. If anyone wants any advice about any aspect of accutane i'm glad to try and give it x

ohh thankyou, did you use aqueous as a cleanser post Accutane?
p.s did it cure you for good, i'm nervous xxx
oh my god, I'm so glad I've found this, because I'm on 3rd month on accutane (still kind of getting worse not better lol), but I have experienced AWFUL back pain, I never knew it was normal omg? I literally couldn't walk today.... also, could I ask if your hand rashes ever sore? I'm worried I'm allergic to this drug, because other rashes on arms are not painful, but the ones on hands are sore... does this also happened to any of you??? thank you so much
your skin looks awesome! congrats!
I have pretty much the same side effects as you. The worst being dry lips, eczema (rash on my hands), and the rib/back pain (omg this has been so bad lately).
For lips I really love palmer's cocoa butter stick. Amazing and cheap. and Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. Great but really pricey for what it is. Aquaphor is good but tends to melt on my face and leave a halo of grease around my lips. Not attractive, but ok to wear on my lips overnight lol.
For the eczema... gold bond eczema relief is really good. Definitely helps the rash clear up. My doc also prescribed me a hydrocortisone cream for when it gets really annoying.
For the rib/back pain... if anyone has any tips other than advil please let me know. It has been brutal the past few weeks, especially after a long day at work on my feet.
Lips: I like Dr. Dan's Cortibalm and ChopSaver
Skin: Cetaphil gets rid of my dry ski and eczema

Back pain is very normal but a really rubbish side effect. I hope it gos away after treatment. Apparently omega pills help, as i've only got a month to go i'm just gonna wait it out xx
