Hi all,
I am after some advice please.
My partner has been on Roaccutane for several years now - think this is about his 6th or 7th course of the treatment.
His skin is hugely improved, gone from 40mg every day to 10mg twice a week. He no longer gets spots on his back, shoulders etc
However he is still getting the odd spot on his jaw line, this really depresses him (not sure if this is because of the medication side affects worsening it) and he will just go to bed and he feels like it is totally ruining his life still.
The spots on his face settle within a week or so but if you tweeze/pluck the hair out its covered in a thick serum type substance.
They seem to be cropping up a little bit more frequently which is totally depressing him as well as what look like heat bumps on his neck area which settle within a few hours of having a shower.
I am desperate for some advice to try and support him as I hate how he feels, I honestly don't think it is as bad as he thinks it is, but when he has been suffering for so long I don't blame him getting so upset.
He is constantly worrying about his skin which is stopping us doing day trips etc just in case it flares up
He is 31 this year
Please offer ANY advice, suggestions etc
Thankyou

Hi, sorry he still struggling after so long of using the treatment....I had a 6month course of roaccutane, 7years ago and it improved my acne greatly but my skin started to get very oily again about 12months later. I only have mild acne now but the oily skin(over active glands) has controlled my life for most of the past 22 years,...I know just how he feels about day trips out etc....I'm also male and always had these concerns, as worried my oily skin might cause a breakout while I'm out as not able to control the oil the same when I'm out in public..... its always in the back of your mind, so completely understand how he feels.......I've just started a low dose of roaccutane (20mg a day) to try and control the oil in my skin but still using a gel called Panoxyl 10% acnegel(Benzoyl Peroxide). I've used this for most of the last 20 years and it does an excellent job of controlling any acne breakouts but sadly doesnt help my oily skin.......so I'm hoping that together with roaccutane I can treat the inside(accutane) and the outside(Panoxyl)...if that makes sense? Both are very drying so as the Roaccutane starts to work(only on day 6 of the new treatment) I'll reduce the amount of Panoxyl I use. It might be worth your partner trying it to treat those individual spots .....Panoxyl isnt a cure but it does treat acne by removing any dead skin cells that might clog your pores and kills the bacteria that causes any spots and the good thing is it isnt an antibiotic so the body doesnt build up a resistance.......it might just help reduce the redness when that odd spot does appear...
Make sure he also drinks lots of water and maybe look at the products he is using....maybe a face wash or a moisturiser is making his skin sensitive...
Hope he finds something that works for him...
Best wishes
Thankyou so much for the reply
I cant begin to understand how he feels, just want to be there to support him.
Where would we look at getting the Panoxyl? Is it something to use on specific areas once it has flared or all over?
Thankyou again
Hi,
Anytime! I'm sure your support helps a great deal....It's really difficult because its always on your mind so can never truly relax and enjoy yourself or even be yourself so its great your being so supportive......After 20+ years of creams/gels etc I'm just trying to break the cycle which is why I'm trying a low dose of roaccutane myself but as mentioned I've used Panoxyl for over 20years and it works great on acne but you dont need to use much as its very drying... Its just an over-the-counter gel that you can buy from most chemists or you can order online....I'm not sure if you are in the UK or not but here in the UK you can pretty much buy it from any online chemist and get it delivered next day.....cost is around £4.00 Might be worth you google the product so you can see the postive reviews...
Not sure if I'm allowed to put a link but just wanted to show you a picture so you know what it looks like....and you can get it in different strengths (2.5% or 10%) I've just copied a link from a website so you can see a picture....
I normally use it in the areas where it has flared up or where it looks like it might flare up and find it can reduce the size or even stop the spot before it comes to the surface, at worse it will help to dry it up quicker....I think using it "all over" might be too drying if your partner is still using roaccutane at the moment..I use it after a wash once in morning and once in the evening as part of my routine...We are all different so might not be right for him but might be worth a try!
Hope it helps...
Kind regards
yup - live in the UK so ill nip to Boots tomorrow and see if they have some there
I was looking into Hypnotherapy and wondered if that might help - good ol' google seems to think it can but nothing like getting first hand recommendation
I checked on the boots site when looking for a picture for you but didnt seem to stock it now for some reason..I've ordered it from a few online UK chemists a number of times in the past and always been great with delivering on time...(links below if it helps)
Best wishes

Apparently he has tried that and it made no difference
just bleached the sheets...
OK, sorry not much help......Has he tried the different strengths? and using it with the accutane? It might not be enough for some people as a stand-alone treatment but as he's still taking roaccutane it still might have helped?......It so difficult because everyone is different and what works for someone doesnt for someone else......I dont know if what you eat has a big impact but could it be something in his diet? (too much dairy products) Does he drink alcohol?...Thats (sadly! one of the things we shouldnt do while taking accutane but dont know how much it effects results.... Just trying to think of a few options for him.....
Hope he finds a routine that works for him
Kind regards
