Hi, I'm going to be starting accutane real quick here. My derm is placing me on 100mg " to start". A 40mg in the morning and a 40+20mg at night. I weigh 175, I can not find anything with people starting this high at this body weight. Any ideas what I can expect? I trust she knows what shes doing but this seems pretty high to start right off with from other posts I have read.
Hmm, your acne must be pretty severe to have such a high dosage. All I can say is good luck, and you've made your first step towards clear skin.
Thanks. With the use of topicals not the worst. Lots of red, oily dry skin, few active cysts and some other spots. However when I quit topicals I literally go almost full coverage rash like acne on my cheeks, forhead, nose. Nothing has worked to suppress stop that. Tried caveman regime once and 5 days in had 150+ spots and spreading. I'm really worried about stopping topicals for this. I'm going to look so awefull. Hope it kicks in quick.

wouldn't caveman with accutane. Also, accutane has a purging period where you will have initial breakouts. Go through it though, and you'll be golden
I did accutane and had very little side effects or problems. I took 40 mg to start with and after two or three months I got upped to 60 for the remainder. I think I took it 5 or 6 months. I also took vitamin a supplements from my dermatologist. I only washed my face with water after two weeks in.
Used good lip balm and kept my lips okay too. I only washed my chest, underarms and crotch everyday with mild cleaner. Washed my hair every two or three days and used a good conditioner. Covered a lot of my body in aveeno, which kept my skin healthy. I also used aveeno moisturizer on my face everyday. I remember I took the accutane every morning with a glass of milk. Most of the time I didn't even eat anything else, just the milk.
I had no side effects while on accutane, and really, pretty mild side effects after. Been 8 years and I have zero side effects from using accutane.
Thanks everyone. I am 7 days in! I may start a log so I no longer have to bump this one, just an update. My dose got lowered to 80mgs because my bloodtest were high. Everything else was good but my Biliruben was high. Normal levels are 0-1% mines was 1.2% so they are monitoring this. This is rough, 3 days in my skin became extremely red and irritated, started to peel like crazy. Feels like my face is melting. It is getting better now, moisterizing still feels like rubbing acid on my skin though. My derm said this is normal and ok. Feels terrible though
That was 3 days in, its getting better every day. I think it was such an extreme reaction due to the high dose. I'm already red to begin with but it made me extremely red. That redness is fading and the face pealing is mostly done. Still getting it on ear lobes and stuff. Hopefully that was the worst of it. Besides chapped lips, dry eyes and some soreness I feel ok! I went and saw her in person, she said its hitting me pretty hard but is still normal and should fade.
Gah! You guys are scaring me! I'm on day 2 of 40 mgs at 140lbs. I hope the peeling doesn't happen to me!

I watched a youtube video the other day (sorry, I can't remember which one) and the girl was 135 lbs on 60mg to start, and the doc upped it to 80mg on the second month! So 100mg isn't unheard of for your weight. Also, a high dosage makes it much more likely that your acne will stay away, so as long as your side-effects aren't too severe, push onward!
Yeah, I was just more concerned at the fact that i was starting so high. Seems most people worked up to that dose. I'm 3 weeks in now, going by really fast. First bloodtest and apointment next week. Feeling good.
Still really red but an even red. I look like I have raccoon eyes. My elbows and arms are dry and pealing. I got HUGE splits on the side of my mouth for 2 weeks which have just now gone away. I had a breakout on each side and opening my mouth kept tearing them open again. Main flakeyness is around my mouth and between my eyebrows. The flakes around my mouth are going away, was really bad like complete reptile status for a few weeks.
Moisterizer does not burn to put on anymore. Overally feeling really good.
I'm so happy to hear you're doing well! 100mg is a very very high dose to start with, but every derm has their own way of tackling accutane, and there really is no right or wrong!
Just think though, at 100mg you're going to reach your minimum dosage so quick and be over before you know it! Myself I was on 20mg for the first two months and have been on 40mg since
Also... Just want to say big props to you dude for dealing with such severe redness/side effects to begin with! I struggle to cope if I have a tiny breakout now or my PIH is particularly bad, so I find you really inspiring!
