Should I Start Taking Birth Control?

Here's a little background. I've struggled with acne since I was in middle school, and I'm now in college and still deal with it. I've tried almost everything, but I have always been pretty reluctant to try any birth control because I just don't want to mess with my hormones, just to possibly help my skin. Fortunately, recently I've been able to get my skin under control. However, I am sexually active now and I really would like to take birth control pills mainly for the purpose of contraception, not for my skin. But I've read a lot about how birth control pills often make your skin worse for the first 3 months, and I don't want that, especially considering my skin is currently in the best condition that it's been in years. I just want my skin to remain the way it is now. My doctor prescribed me Ocella (the generic version of Yaz) about a month ago to help my skin out, but I have yet to take it yet, because I'm afraid it's just going to make my skin worse. So is the birth control benefit really worth the damage it potentially might do with my skin? Are there any birth control pills that don't have any positive or negative effect on your skin? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

I took Yaz for a very long time. It really helped my acne. But after long time use in no longer worked. I had moderate hormonal acne (mostly topical white heads). It worked fairly quickly for me and did not make my acne worse in the beginning. I got better fairly quickly. I no longer take yaz. I take spirolactone at 100mg and this keeps me very clear. I get an occasional pimple during hormonal flux, but nothing that a little TLC can't help.

There are a lot of pills that also help with acne, I think Diane 35 is the only one specifically designed to help with acne (and the birth control part is a side effect haha). I don't think the safest pills (1st and 2nd gen) have a good effect though, some even have a bad effect.

In any case, be sure to watch your mental health and thrombosis risk when messing with hormones! Also, I tried a lot of BC and quit taking one a couple months ago (after 5 years of use) and my libido is suddenly a lot better! So be sure to watch all side effects!
