Prescription Acne Medication Suggestions For Mild Acne

Hey all!

I started having moderate acne at 13 years old, and at 16 until now at 19 it has turned into mild but very persistent acne and bacne. I find a new pimple every day, get the occasional whitehead, have lots of small red bumps on my forehead, cheeks, and jawline, and have tons of acne scars. My face has been super oily and rough for the past couple years. I am also Asian, who are apparently very prone to hyper-pigmentation (just my luck).

For about 1.5 years I have been on Epiduo prescribed by my PCP as well as clindamycin phosphate for my bacne. Though I believe the medications have helped, they have come nowhere close to eliminating my acne for good, which was my intention. I also use a acne specific benzoyl peroxide facial wash twice a day, even on my back. I eat fairly healthy, with no sodas and rarely sugary foods in my diet. I primarily drink water and occasionally juice, as well as drinking homemade smoothies regularly. I am also an avid runner and exercise pretty frequently. I mostly did these things to rid myself of acne, but these seemed to help very minimally.

I was just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for acne treatments. I have an appointment with a dermatologist soon, but I am not sure what medications I should ask about. I'm also unsure of what medications I qualify for, though I'm sure my derm will let me know.

I feel like acne is affecting my college experience due to lack of confidence. It feels like everyone has clear skin...

General info: 19 years old, male

Thanks!

I'm thinking that my derm might try topical prescriptions like Retin-A or antibiotics Honestly, really hoping he puts me on isotretinoin, though. But I will definitely ask about topicals that aren't Epiduo, because Epiduo hasn't done much of anything. Very commercialized.

If u r scarring u should go on accutane.

If you do end up trying a retinoid take it very slow. They tell you to use it daily but if it were me I would start using it every third day for a few weeks then try every other day for a few weeks before trying everyday. This way you can monitor how your skin reacts and stop if things get a lot worse (don't believe that purging garbage if things get worse STOP USING IT). Also, you can give your skin a chance to adjust better so possibly reducing any negative side effects.

Inderm worked for me when I was in high school, got prescribed the only time I've visited a dermatologist for my acne. It's not on prescription in my country, so I've used it again since and was successful. It takes time though and it's not advised to keep using it so my acne came back after being clear for about half a year maximum. It is a topical antibiotic with added alcohols btw, very drying but I have never peeled or flaked from it like with benzoyl. In fact, I think that from all the things I've tried it probably was the easiest and most comfortable (no side-effects apart from dryness which is easily solved with a moisturizer). About 18 euro without prescription. If you use, use it for at least 6/8 weeks, as the manual advises (so that the bacteria actually be killed off completely and don't just grow resistant)
