Hey guys, I felt so frustrated today that I cried during work. I am glad that no one saw it. I had to keep myself busy the whole day to not think about the fact that my life is such a mess.
So, a little bit background information:
I am 21 years old female with PCOS. I have been getting cystic acne since grade 8. I have lots of permanent scarring..currently doing 40 mg/day.
My skin is way worse than before accutane. I am in month 5 and still breaking out...I have 3 huge cysts on my face right now. My dermatologist said that accutane does not affect PCOS in any means, but as a matter of fact, my PCOS symptoms have been getting a lot worse. I have grown lots of belly hair which is a nightmare for a woman...my period did not come for the last 2 month....and I lost almost 40% of my hair.
Derm said that if the hair loss is due to accutane, it will grow back. She didn't want me to come off the drug because she thinks that hair loss is not permanent but my scars are. However, I still feel desperate because no one will ever tell me whether my hair loss is caused by accutane or PCOS...and the amount of hair that I lost is a bit too crazy. Also, no one can guarantee that my hair will come back...
I might take the risk if accutane is improving my skin magically like it did for other people, but in reality I am still waiting for that 'magical moment' to come. I feel like it's never gonna happen .... I am battling everyday whether I should stop messing up my body with the drug or hang in there until I finish the course....
Thanks for reading ..
Hey, don't give up!
There's this guy I watch on youtube who does fitness, and he's been on accutane for 74 weeks!
That just goes to show that in severe cases, it may take longer than 3-6 months! Look at this dude, he's been on it for almost 1 1/2 years, and only recently has it become a ton better. Really wish the best for you, I know the feeling of having acne and it hurting your self esteem, even at my age when technically acne is "normal" as a teenager.
Hello kl1001.
I can totally understand you of how much acne can affect us, it makes us desesperate to the point to take dangerous drugs (accutane).
If you want my opinion you should still wait one or two months before you see improvements but I think accutane doesnt cure hormonal acne, unfourtenaly it will come back.
For me accutane destroyed my life I developed a extreme rare side effect of it even with a low dose in a period of 3 months. Now I cry everyday of how much I hate myself and this drug. (You can see my personal story of it in my post)
For the hair lose did you have this problem before taking accutane? If not its indeed the medication thats doing that. If you really scared of the damage of hair loss you should maybe stop it. As you say no one can guarantiee you
Have you heard of spironolactone? Alot of people take it for pcos problem and most of them swear by it! There's also birth control pills that can help wich I think I'm going to take it since I tried everything.

Hi Antonthegreat,
Thanks for replying! I watch this guy's videos a lot He is my hero... the main concern for me with the tane is my hair loss...apparently this dude has only minimum side effects
I would say stop. If it's hormonal it will come back. Have you tried SPIRO or other things geared towards hormonal acne?
I know how rough it can be. You are not alone

Hey Leelowe1,
Thanks for the hugs! My derm said accutane works better than spiro, but I might switch to spiro since it also prevents hair loss caused by excessive androgen ....
I don't know if I wanna be on spiro for years. It seems that once you are off spiro, all the symptoms will come back

Hi Porswis,
Even though I didn't experience the same situation, I can still feel you. I know how hard it is. I cry very easily as well.....and I don't cry in front of anyone, including my boyfriend. When I was joking like "I might be bald real soon." He just laughed at me and said that balding only happens to men. It is so hard to convince other people that women suffer from androgenic hair loss as well. No one pays attention to it....
I do have thinning hair problem over the past 3 or 4 years. It just speeded up a lot since I went on accutane..
I hope your symptoms get well soon. A pharmacist once said to me that...any drug could cause anything. I guess this is true.
You can always talk to me if you wish I guess it is more effective crying to me because I understand what you are going through, while others (including our derms
) can not relate to theses issues

The thing with accutane is that it will not keep your acne at bay if the issue is primarily hormonal. Which was what happened to me when I used it. It was devastating to go from clear to broken out....I haven't been back since.
Ugh
Why dr offer it than
Grrrrr
I'll be 42 in June
Derm rec accurate for 6 months rather than spiro
Said better take tane for 6 months rather tane indefinitely
Even though bw came back normal obviously there was/is hormonal issue
I'm days away from my 6 months anni and have never been completely clear for more than a handful of days
I'm already pissed and devastated ...
Never mind breaking out again
I would have liked some sort break

Thanks kl1001 your support helps me to face this hard situation. You can also talk to me when you're down I also can help you with some advice for acne too
Yeah people dont take us seriosly wich it can hurts us. You should explain to your boyfriend that this is a situation really difficult and you need support.
Hmmm I guess its the pcos that is making your thining. I think as leelowe1 said here you should take spironolactone it helps pcos problems. Of course this not a cure but you can take it in longterm. While with accutane your acne will propably come back too. But its a more serious drug.
Thanks I really hope too but I think the damage its chronic. I went to forums to read some stories of people who are still having the sides effects of accutane 10 or more years later. I'm so scared to live with this for the rest of my life!! I'm desesperate to find a way to treat it.
Hugs and stay strong
