Are antibiotics supposed to somehow prevent acne from coming back once you stop taking them (assuming it does help acne to clear up) and if so how would that work? If not, what would be the point of taking antibiotics if they only work while you are taking them and you can't take them long term.
From what my dermatologist has told me, antibiotics only have a dramatic effect while you take them. When you go off of them, your acne will not be treated, but it may be reduced. When my doctor put me on doxycycline, it was just for the month before I could begin accutane. There was some improvement in my skin, but nothing amazing.
