My first official post on here. I have been following the Accutane discussions for me on these forums.
Well long story short-Im 29 years old female. Battled normal teen acne like we all do. And then about 23 is when it started up slowly. Nothing major but about 24 is when it went hey there friend im bring all my friends over!!
I took basic approaches to it such as the cleanser/toner/moisturizers (all the different brands-proactive, Clinique, rodan&fields, burts bees etc). I even started to drink marigold tea (a Russian acne savor per my parents and grandparents words) Nothing. Ive done peels/masks and spa treatments short of acupuncture and laser light.nope that isnt coming near my faceeven though its already messed up.
Then I went to a dermatologist for about 3+ years. My husband was adamant on me never going on it since I do have depressive tendencies. So we started off with the basic causes and fixes to the more complex. Blood work was good, hormones were ok-I have a little bit higher testosterone then a lady should have but by a tiny amount that wont make a difference. Never had or been pregnant-so those hormones are automatically out. My birth control has no estrogen. We did different prescription face regiments morning day and night. No changes. We did antibiotics but after a few months they stop working. Then we started to slowly play around with my food with deducting or adding. We did this with one food at a time to document the changes or lack off. There were no major changes.
Then we had to move to Hawaii from Puerto Rico (military husband). Here I settled in and found a dermatologist. Set up an appointment and brought in my dermatologist (military base) the file from PR. We talked about concerns and she prescribed me a newer based medication. This was to help out in the mean time of her studying my case and all the documentations of 3 years of previous dermatologist.
Then my 2nd appointment came. She sat down and explained there are not many options to go through any more in the fact that i have patiently done so many different experiments that obviously didnt work.
~~~Theres 3 options. 1. Give it time and the topical prescriptions that worked use those and hope itll go away (we both were skeptical bc its been 5 years!!) 2. Go though one of two treatments that would touch my face.nope. nothing is coming near my face. 3. Accutane. The dreaded word..
After having the conversation with her about how my husband does not want me on it, that I do see a psychiatrist for depressive tendencies monthly and I have done research on it and it seems scary.
Then she sat and jotted a bunch of notes/words. And came up with a plan. It would take a couple months to go through before I would even register with the iPledge. I had to get psychiatrist approval as well as him being in contact monthly to the dermatologist, after each visit with him. They came up for a way to communicate but also be able to have everything on file to forward out. This is to get around/preapproved for the depressive tendencies by iPledge. After that is when she called to let me know that I got approved for the program and can start the registration process.so Im on it as of January 26th, 2015.
We are taking the "get it over with ASAP approach because 1. makes it easier bc i own my own business -deal with pets daily and not people, so that gives me confidence I can just hide and not have to show my face at its worst. 2. we live in hawaii and i want to be able to feel confident to go out in to town or to a military ball and not put on cakes and cakes worth of full coverage to cover up daily breakouts, even the scars and just my face. problem is that its hawaii and hot so that doesnt last long before starts melting. and yes i do have LOTS LOTSSSS of 50+SPF sunscreen!!
Hugs!
Congrats on Starting Accutane! So it sounds like you've been on it for a month how are things going skin wise?! Your story is similar to mine, I had mild, VERY mild acne in high school and my early 20's and around 24, 25 it went bat shit. I'm 27 almost 28 and obviously still dealing with it.
Also, I have a question for you. I will be starting my treatment in about two weeks, and the end of May will be going to Maui (can't WAIT!) What do you recommend as I will be in the heart of my treatment. Obviously lots of sunscreen but I was going to buy big brimmed hats, swim suit covers, what kind of sunscreen have you been using? Do you have any tips or advice for someone visiting on Accutane?
