Hello all. The name is thereisalwayshope. That is not my real name of course, but it is the name I try and live by.
My story: I started getting acne roughly 4 years ago and it has been a never ending roller-coaster. Here are just some of the things I have tried to get some control of my acne.
- Turmeric mask = did not help
- Aspirin mask = helped very minimally
- Tea Tree oil = did not help
- Sulfer treatments = minimal
- Benzoyl Peroxide, 2% 5% 10% = keeps me 85% clear
- Vitamins = moderately helps
- Dairy free = did not help
- Gluten free = did not help
- Birth control = unknown
Those are just off the top of my head. So after many trips to the Dermatologist and normal blood work I decided to go on Accutane. I am however, under doctor advice still using BP for my skin because it is helping keep additional scars and acne at bay. I will stop BP altogether at about month 3.5 or so. I will play it by ear!
My dose is 30mg twice a day. My first dose was yesterday evening. I hope to keep this log updated with my progress.
Hey sweetie! Did you not do Spiro. Accutane will definitely help. Good Luck and keep us posted. Is this going to be your log? Wishing you all the best in the world
Hi! Yes, this is going to be my log. And definitely think it will help. When you went on accutane did you go on it for 5 or 6 months? My insurance is currently approved for five months however, I do believe I might need to be on it for the 6. I will have to discuss this matter with my doctor soon.
Day 5
Yikes!
I did know Accutane would cause some uncomfortable side affects including, but not limited to dryness to the face and lips but I did not think it would hit me this quickly! My face and lips are peeling. I need to invest in some stronger moisturizers obviously. My hair also seems to be less greasy than normal, which I do not mind at all.
I also broke out. I know many individuals that have been on this drug have noted a nasty initial breakout and I am afraid this is just the beginning....it is only day 5 for goodness sake, I have months more to go lol.
In the meantime, I am going to drink extra water and keep my as skin moisturized as possible. This is important because dryness and irritation may cause further unwarranted breakouts that I am not willing to welcome onto my already scarred face.
Anyway, welcome to acne everyone. Let us just keep moving forward eh?
Goodluck!
This is my 4th day on accutane and still haven't noticed anything- no IB or side affects yet
Oh YAY! I am so glad that you are on Accutane too! We can help each other through this. I would just be prepared for the side affects. They are not kind to the skin!
😀 Today I'll be taking my 5th pill (20 mg every day)
Still haven't noticed ANY side affects whatsoever :S
Maybe my dose should be higher or something? not sure, I'll call my doc and ask him lol
When do u usually start to feel side affects?

Wait!...So you are only taking 20mg a day? I am taking 30mg twice a day. Maybe there is some kind of mistake. I think you should talk to your doctor and see if your dosing is correct.

Update
Oh my goodness. My lips are twice as dry since two days ago. They are peeling, cracking and so close to bleeding. These unsightly gross dry lips have to go. It is so uncomfortable. I did some research about various lip balms and chapsticks and I have found that the "Medicated" version of the Chapstick brand is perfect for incredibly dry, cracked lips. I purchased some this morning and I already feel the relief. So far, I would definitely recommend this chapstick. I will let you know in a couple days regarding how my lips are holding up.
Onto my skin...I have continued to break out. I broke out in another two cysts yesterday. I have not had this many pimples in roughly a year. I hate them, but I am fully aware the breakouts will continue :/
Anyway, cheers.

Yup, the breakouts suck! I'm on 20 mg and you would think a low dose would make me immune- nope. The sides of my mouth are a big, pimpy, red, inflamed mess and its dry to boot - sigh. Are you going to add pictures? You gave me such encouragement on The Regimen with your photo and log updates that i'm hoping you do the same here. Good Luck to you sweetie - it's time for you to have some clarity.

Im also taking 20mg.
I'm exactly 1 week in and haven't really seen any breakouts and I'm not too dry lol
My lips are kinda dry i guess, but not too much
Day 12 Update
So the two huge cysts that I had got earlier are about a day from dying. Thankfully! I have not gotten anything else since that first breakout. I am praying it will just stay this way. My lips are feeling great with my new chapstick and my face is not dry anymore thanks to my Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. So at least the uncomfortable side affects are at bay.
I do want to note again that I am still using BP 5% in the evenings only now, and not twice a day like I was doing a 1 week ago. I do plan on dropping BP altogether soon. Before Accutane if I skipped one application of BP, I kid you not I broke out in 2-3 pimples. It was like a sure thing. So Accutane is doing something, albiet it may not be a lot right now, I do know it is helping.
Bigjudy - I am glad you have not had dry lips or dry face! Are you taking 20mg a day, or 40mg a day?
leelowe1 - I know the side affects suck! Have you not found any relief for the dryness yet? I was going to post pictures but since I was using BP before Accutane and still on the drug there just is not much progress to show, you know? I have just the 2 active cysts that are a couple days from drying out. How much longer is your course of Accutane? Also which birth control are you on?

Good luck man 😀
Well now my lips are getting pretty dry.
I was going to up to 40mg but i decided to stay at 20mg for this month.
My face isn't too dry.
I've been getting dandruff or something? I think it has something to do with accutane making your skin dry or something because I don't usually get dandruff just like that, especially since I always use anti-dandruff shampoo lol
Also I've been getting quite a bit of back pain and it's only my 10th day :s
I haven't had much of a breakout either btw.
P.S im 15, turning 16 in less than 4 months
Day 15 Update
So its been a little over two weeks and I cannot wait to be done already lol. I got two more medium sized papsules since my last update and I have two that are drying up still. It seems my actives are taking twice as long to dry up and disappear than before Accutane. My lips are increasingly dry, to the point where the chapstick I thought was working is not anymore. I tried another yesterday and it was worse! Ugh... this lips dryness is the absolute worst part personally. I bought another chapstick from Burtsbees this evening and I hope it will actually work this time. My hair grease is also nonexistent which is the nicest part of Accutane!
Otherwise I am feeling good. No other complaints here.

Go buy some Aquaphor for your lips. Its definitely the best to use while on Accutane. Itll be a life saver!
Update Day 27
So it has been nearly one month starting Accutane! I am going to keep it short and sweet...I am breaking out ever couple days and currently have one active. My skin is no longer dry and my lips are no longer dry thanks to aquaphor lip repair balm (thanks CWR24!). I got my blood drawn again today to prepare for next months accutane prescription. I am totally ready to continue this journey!
