What are the long term effects of skipping the placebo pills in birth control and taking only active pills? Does this mean that the flare-up after I stop taking birth control (probably several years from now) will be much worse than what it would be if I took each placebo? Are there any other hazards to skipping placebo pills besides having unexpected breakthrough bleeding?
No. Typically the placebo pill does not contain any hormones. The placebo pills are there to help you remember to take your pills. Specifically, if you skip your placebo pills, it may be harder to remember when you are supposed to start taking the non-placebo pills again. If you want to skip the placebo pills that's fine, just remember to start your cycle the day after you would normally take your last placebo pill.
In reality, it's all just so much easier if you take your pill (placebo and non-placebo) at the same time everyday in accordance with your prescription.
Thank you for your timely response! However, I meant skipping the week of placebo pills and taking active pills back to back on a daily basis rather than not taking any pills for a week and resuming active pills. Would you happen to know if this would intensify the break out that happens when you stop taking birth control in the future?
I don't know beyond my own experience, but doing this really screwed up my cycle and did cause a huge upset in my skin. I also had break-through bleeding for a month, which was no fun at all. I am positive this is not most people's experience, but when I called my OB/Gyn to tell her about my issue, she told me "You should have called me first". Not sure what that meant, but my miserable experience was enough to never do that again as long as I am on the pill supervised by a doctor or not! Periods suck, but not as much as bleeding all month and dealing with perpetual pms. :\
