I have suffered from moderate / severe acne for 4 years since I was 15 and I have been trying different treatments (with absolutely no success) for the past two years (Oxytetracycline, Benzoyl peroxide, lymecycline, zineryt, differin, doxycycline, flucloxacillin and many over-the-counters). I was referred to a dermatologist on the NHS 5 months ago and they put me on differin/ doxycycline which I have been using since. I have my next appointment in the near future and I have decided that, considering all the side effects, that I would really like to try roaccutane. What are the chances that the dermatologist will suggest roaccutane, and if not, can I or would it be wise to tell them that is the route i wish to go down immediately? Thanks.

You need to let your dermatologist know just how much of an impact acne has on you, and that you want a solution once and for all. I'm sure you, like everyone else on this board, is truly effected by their acne. People who don't suffer from it will never know the real negative impact it has on our daily lives. Just tell your dermatologist that you feel accutane is the best solution for you and that clear skin is something you really want, and that you feel you're wasting your time with anything else.

If you haven't cleared up using differin + doxy for 5 months, I'm pretty sure your derm won't object to accutane. My derm told me that 3 months of antibiotic + a strong retinoid w/o significant improvement is a good indicator that you might want to try accutane. I was in the same boat... tazorac just happened on work literally on month 3.

I took my list of previous prescriptions and over counter products, home redies, diet changes and what have you and she literally just said.. I cant believe it took you this long to get on accutane. I start June 5th. If your derm is not a fan of accutane, try a different derm. I find women more willing to prescribe accutane than men but ask straight out, dont dance around it.

Yes this is what I did, She mentioned roaccutane and said, but you should try another topical first, but I insisted and she arranged a blood test which I had and if all is ok I will start in a month. Perhaps though to her reluctance, I got the impression.

Another piece of advice-- don't appear too emotional about the topic! Sounds crazy, but dermatologists are wary of prescribing Accutane to anyone who has been diagnosed with depression.

If you have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorder, have your psychiatrist/prescribing doctor write a letter or provide you with a "medical clearance" to start Accutane.

Also, you could phrase the question in a hypothetical sense: Do you think I will possibly ever need Accutane to help with my acne? It seems as if I've been on everything!

If you have a previous history with other dermatologists and have tried other treatments, try to transfer your records to your current dermatologist, or obtain them for yourself. That way, you can prove that you've "tried everything".
