Hi guys, I'm a 19 year old chinese male, 2 years ago I made the decision to go on Accutane, and I can say it was pretty much the worst decision I've made in my life.
I've had moderate acne since 14, and after trying antibitoics, the benzoyl peroxide regimen and stopping after I realized the harmful side of it, I did nothing for my face for a while and it became worse. So eventually I got fed up of my face's condition and decided to visit a dermatologist a friend recommended me. He prescribed Accutane, starting with a low dose of 20mg per 2 days, and as weeks passed to 20mg per 5 days, a week, and then once every 10 days. The only prominent side effect I experienced was dry lips, no big deal. I had clear skin during my prescription period, and I thought, damn, life is good!
It wasn't until July this year when I noticed strands of hair on my table, and on the toilet floor, and before this, I NEVER dropped hair, or like maybe one strand a month? This was after 1 year and eight months on this drug, so I immediately stopped taking it, went online to buy stuff like enzymes, gr8 dolphilus, fibre, liver detox, biotin, l-cystine, and all that good stuff that would promote a healthy digestive system, so to at least try to slow down my hair loss, and using something else to maintain my skin's clarity.
So 6 months since then, I'm still dropping 10-20 strands of hair per trip to the showers, and I could not be more depressed. My skin isn't clear, but it's at least better than before Accutane, due to the supplements I've been taking I suspect. If shit gets serious and my hair doesn't recover, I'm planning to just shave off my hair, though that would only be a last resort since I look a hundred times better with hair than no hair.
I've had ridiculously thick hair before Accutane, and now it's just slowly but surely going away. Not to mention I'm also experiencing other side effects such as my whole body being more sensitive to the sun, mainly my scalp, constant cracking of joints. Though I'm more fortunate than some others who experienced Crohn's disease, or erectile dysfunction.
So basically what I did with Acctuane was swap one problem for another, though my acne isn't anywhere near gone. For those of you considering Accutane, please don't try it! I once thought I would just #yolo and try it out, hoping I might be one of the lucky ones to not get any side effects. Turns out, I wasn't, so I'm screwed now.
From what I've found online, people are saying the hair loss is due to a overdose of Vitamin A from accutane that's causing the hair fall, and that loads of vitamin is still trapped in your system. Well I've been taking liver detox supplements for 2 months and I've not touched accutane for 6 months, you'd think all the accutane would have left my body by now.
Thanks for reading, and for those of you who have also experienced hair loss or other side effects due to Accutane, I'd be really glad to hear of your experiences or things you have done to improve your condition
For your joints I'd start on a calcium supplement like an all in one. Google youngevity osteo fx... My dad takes the stuff. It doesn't HAVE to be that exact suplement. It just gives you an example. Also helps hair. I hear Accutane can deplete vitmain D and stuff and things like that have it too. Next, get on some vitamins for hair, and maybe some biotin. Cut out junk and start juicing for a while and do this all faithfully for a couple of months. Can i guarantee anything? No probably not but i bet it will help until your hair striaghtens out.
And remember one thing.... You were on that drug for almost two years. That's a long time! So you may need some time to recover. I hope your acne at least improved some...your hair will likely recover in time. I mean i guess it makes sense that accutane woukd take a wack at the hair follicles too as well as sebaceous glands. And vitamin A overdose can cause hairloss. So yeah. I wish you well in your recovery.
What kind of hairloss are you experiencing? Is it in the typical male pattern baldness pattern, or is distributed all over the scalp? To confirm the hairloss yourself, do something called the "hair pull test" (you can Google it).
Have you been taking low-dose Accutane for the past 1.5 years? What is the cumulative dose of Accutane you've taken so far?
Random supplements you've thought of or have been recommended to you via broscience aren't going to do anything to stop the hairloss. The first thing you need to do is go to a dermatologist or doctor who specializes in hair and properly confirm you are getting hairloss and what type of loss it is (there are many different kinds).
I don't know the specific mechanism by which Accutane causes hairloss, but very generally speaking the hairloss has been caused by some kind of shock Accutane has given your body. People get hairloss all the time due to all kinds of shocks, e.g. childbirth, depression, etc. There's a pretty common occurrence of hairloss on this site from people who do long-term overdoses of vitamin B5. I doubt there is any solution but to wait for your body to correct the problem in its own time. Just don't take anymore Accutane.
hey man, im a 27 year old male. i started taking Roaccutane when i was 16, did like a month and a half then stopped because i found out it could stent muscle growth. it was in a time when i wanted to be an athlete so i stopped. the acne went away for like one year and then came back, though it was softer. i was so frustrated that it came back because for the first time in my teen life i had a clear face and could approach girls with confidence, and that stopped. so i decided to restart the treatment, this time consulting with an "expert" dermatologist.
i will forever hate this man. i told him i had half a treatment already and wanted my acne to be gone before i got drafted into the army. the guy gave me turbo dosage for 2 months, during and after which i started losing the whole front portion of my hair. this was one of the most unexpected suckerpunches i ever got in my life because i loved my hair so much. i went on to be treated for my hair in a clinic + propecia for 5 years (!!!) during my whole army service. it helped. i had a good run after my service where i travelled the world a little bit with my hair back but it was our last run. i stopped taking all those nasty pills because who knows what else they have planned for me (maybe erectile disfunction??). western medicine always tries to treat symptoms instead of having a hoillistic approach on health and going really to the root. thats why in most cases youre gonna take a pill to stop one symptom but that pill could cause a whole other problem entirely, and you would still be left with that first problem because you never took care of its root. which is usually diet and lifestyle.
so i got clear skin but i lost my beautifull long curly hair. oh well,
to be honest i couldnt tell you what id prefer... to have acne scars all over my face and have lush hair or to have clear skin and to be bald. that being said i still regret taking those damn pills. those fucking doctors fool all of us because they are biased and face no consequences over their actions. we are just an experiment for them. if i would suggest something to my old self about the acne i would say "dont take any drugs, change your diet and really tackle this the healthy way, dont look for the easy way out when it comes to health becuz thats what they count on"
