Swimming And Accutane

Hello,

I started on accutane 10mg yesterday. I swim regularly. I just wondered if the chlorine is going to become a problem for me? I shower straight after and will moisturise throughly. My dose is to go up every month depending on how I react to it. Also, I have read about dry eyes. Do contact lense wearers experience problems? I only really wear them for swimming and the gym (with goggles on top for swimming) so could get prescription googles if it's going to be a problem.

Many thanks.

Dee

I swam a few times when I was on accutane (I finished my 5 1/2 month course a week ago) and it didn't worsen my side effects.

However even when I didn't swim I had the worst itchy and dry eyes even though I don't wear contacts. If this happens to you, buy eye drops especially for dry eyes, they helped me a lot if I applied the regularly enough :)

Thank you for your reply.

I've been swimming twice now since starting the roaccutane.

My eyes have, predictably, got incredibly dry so I can't wear contacts. I got some eye drops from my doctor today which make them much more comfortable though. I'm going to get some prescription googles as they are only 19 from SpecSavers. Tonight I swam with just regular googles and no contacts but it was a bit scary as my sight is not very good.

I also spoke to my GP about the chlorine, she said to moisturise a lot before and after. I have cetaphil moisturiser so I used that and it seemed to help. I'm guessing later in the treatment I may have to stop swimming though but I'll see how it goes.

I went to the opticians today. I'm trying a different type of contact lense that are moist and more eye drops. Also she looked at the under side of my eye lids and said that the glands are blocked so I have to put hot water on cotton wool or a flannel on the eyes for a couple of minutes each night and then massage the eye lids. She thought this was due to the roaccutane. Also she said to wear the lenses only for a few hours a week e.g. two hours twice a week, which is fine by me as I mainly use them for the gym. I also ordered the prescription googles. My skin on my body is probably the sofest it's ever been - probably due to the intense moisturising regime I have been adhering to. I expect it will dry up though soon enough.
