Isotrex Experiences?

Hi All,

I am 26 years old, mild-moderate acne sufferer (always have mild acne but break out quite badly once or twice a month). Have suffered since the age of 11 and it drives me crazy!!

I have tried the following:

Benzyl Peroxide

Dalacin T

Zineryt

Benzamycin Gel

Oral Clindamycin

Eyrthramycin

Lymecycline

Differin

The Pill (Yasmin, Dianette)

I finally got a referral to a dermatologist in September this year as my GP had to admit defeat and said roaccutane was probably now the last option. I waited 2 months for the appointment, saw the dermatologist last week and was told NO ROACCUTANE :wall: Instead I have been prescribed Isotrex (she tried to give me Differin until I informed her I have already tried it, twice) with instructions to see her again in 6 weeks. I have also been asked to keep a photo diary of my break outs over the next 6 weeks as 'evidence for my file'...

Can anyone tell me if Isotrex works?

Is the initial breakout period as bad as people say?

Is my dermatologist just fulfilling the protocol in order to be able to give me roaccutane at my next appointment??

All experiences/opinions/ideas welcome!

Rebecca x

Hiya

I know this is a good 2 weeks odd after your post but hopefully it'll be of some use! 😀

I was/am in a similar situation to you, and was prescribed both trimethoprim and isotrex whilst I wait for an appointment with a derm (if this doesn't work, I'm going to go for accutane- although I haven't been on quite as many meds as you I myself am gonna push hard to get put on accutane if needed).

Having said that, it might not be. I can only say what I've experienced which is limited as I've only been on these two for 10 days- so by this point you've porbably been on it longer than me! damn... kinda ruins the point of this post.

Ah well. I'm experiencing a bit of a breakout on my jawline but nothing major. Have SEVERE dryness on my neck, was very sore too- unsure if that's down to isotrex tho as my face is fine? Could be down to the trimethropim.

Anyways hope that's some help. Lemme know if it's working for you as i'm pretty interested too 😀

Hi Ben

Thanks for your post!

It's not great news I'm afraid... Now a few weeks in and my skin is worse than before (have attached latest photos below, taken this week).

Now also on Qlaira (not helping AT ALL) and counting down the days until I see the dermatologist again - it was supposed to be 6 weeks after the initial appointment in December but the first available appointment was 12 weeks after so not going until the end of February (don't you just love the NHS??!)

I am not leaving her consulting room without Roaccutane this time - I am more than fed up with prescriptions for medication that never works. The most frustrating thing is that all acne treatments have to taken/used for at least 3 months before you know if they're going to work or not, and while the years go by my acne leaves more and more scars...

Please keep me updated with your progress - I really hope you find something that works for you.

Hey

Hadn't heard of Qlaira! Was a bit worried that I'd missed a different type of antibiotic- but then google'd it and saw it was a birth control pill ):- probably best I leave that then!

Yeah I still haven't heard ANYTHING regarding the derm! Bit worried, as i wanted to get on accutane asap as I've got a very important month in march where I'm going to new york- HOPEFULLY to get a work placement as an illustrator. But seeing as I don't have nowt regarding the derm atm, doubt i'd see him before the end of feb- so I guess it's probably best to forget accutane for now ): . In a way this is good though, I might use the summer to 'endure' the bad (mostly) initial side effects of the drug- have a four month period before I'd go back to uni by which time i'd hope to be alot more clear 🙂 It's just a bloody long wait 🙁

Right, about three days after I started having a server reaction. Wasn't sure what it was at that time, so I carried on taking the trimethoprim. Bad move. Was shivering, nautious, had a rash over all my upper body, generally things weren't too groovy. Stopped taking it and all of that has died down now, so have booked another appointment with my gp tomorrow to give me a chance to throw the empty packet at his head.

The isotrex SEEMS to be going ok for me though! I also started taking supplements with the gel (zinc, b complex, fish oils (LOTS OF FISH OILS)) regularly so that might of helped, no idea. But my skin is feeling a tad smoother and it's got rid of most of the nasty cysts I had on my jawline. Fingers crossed it is working and I'll start seeing a massive difference in a month!

Yep I know exactly what you mean with the 3 month thing. I'm also prone to ALOT of red marks that makes my acne seem so much worse than it is. I probably only have around 10-15 spots then 2-3 cysts, but all the red marks make it seem alot worse :(. Your acne seems alright in the pics though :)- but if it's persistent and you've tried everything else, then accutane deffo seems the way to go.

Hope you manage to the accutane soon! Unless you're still trying with the isotrex, in which case hope that gets better!

Keep me updated 🙂

Hey,

I've been on Isotrex for around 8 months now and sadly it did nothing :(

I found that if you applied too much it would make your skin worse and if you apply to little it won't do anything anyway. I was prescribed Isotrex and Lymecycline and didn't see a difference.

I am now on week three of accutane and still using isotrex and it's having a really good effect now rather than using it on it's own.

Good luck
