How old were you when you took the accutane?suzanne
At the time of the injury I was 19, it was Jan., a couple months before my 20th b-day.
Just remember to STRETCH every time.
I always do; both before and after. The issue was that Accutane weakens bones, joints, and even muscles.
Best wishes.

What year did you take the accutane, I am trying to determine what was known in the warnings at the time...

Acctuane is known to degrade bones/joints/muscles.
This is taken directly from the inside packaging that accompanies Sotret, one of the many "Acctuanes":
*bone and muscle problems. Sotret may effect bones, muscles, and ligaments and cause pain in your joints or muscles. Tell your doctor if you get:
*back pain
*joint pain
*broken bone. Tell all healthcare providers that you take Sotret if you break a bone.
Yeah ibuprofen's fine, as is aspirin, as is paracetamol - none of which have known interactions with Accutane.

NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen) are probably best though as they reduce inflammation unlike paracetamol.
But if the joint pain is persistent or worrying you, tell your derm.
I've been off of accutane for 3 years now and all of my joints hurt (ankles, knees, back, especially neck, etc). I'm only 23 now and my 78 year old grandfather can move around better than I. I wonder how many other people are experiencing this.
More people then one would think! What have you tried to relieve your pain? Have you been to a Rheum?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I have been tested for Rheum specifically, different joint doctors, physical therapy, blood tests for heavy metal poisoning, blood tests for STD's, , literally dozens of x-rays, you name it. Although there has been no diagnosis, my doctor gave me "diclofenac" for the pain, which has not helped. The VA is sending me all over the place but no one can figure it out.
I finished taking roacutane (same thing as accutane just different name) more than 9 years ago!! I still have a few of the side effects, such as joint, muscle and back pain. Dry skin, extremely dry eyes and mucus membranes. I have also been seeing many different doctors doing loads of different tests and x-rays I've done tests for rheum even the very uncommon ones several times all negative. Going back to see a doctor to day and get a referral to a neurologist and see if they find anything.... I'm in pain every minute of every day and its wearing me down the only thing the doctors seem to want to do is give me stronger and stronger pain killers... but they don't work. I'm only 26 but feel like 190. I love doing sport but I'm in so much pain I have problems with just walking.
Sheefa,
Its been a long time since you stopped Accutane. Most board members here know you've been suffering from Accutane induced joint pain for a few years now. Just wondering how you are doing these days? Have the symptoms subsided? Do you have additional symptoms?
Suzanne - you still there? I am suffering one year post-tane and all my joints hurt. Would be interested to see if any others have come forward too regarding this.
Greg
I don't think Sheefa has updated in a while at least a little over a yr. You could try and pm him!

I used to work out a lot. At the best shape of my life when I was 24-28 years old. Started Accutane at 28 years old, after 1 month of finishing therapy, while doing military presses, my back tweaked and from then on I could not lift weights, run,.. and had a very "weak" back. Had to change my lifestyle for a bad back ever since. I am 36 today (8/20/2014) and now have a confirmed cervical disc herniation on MRI. I am really scared and don't know where my future lies...I blame it on this drug and regret using it. Coincidence... I think not. I hope the best for the rest of you.
i am recovering from post accutane problems, i did so by applying tons of grape seed oil (high in linoleic acid) to my upper arms and experienced muscle twitches shortly afterward. since then I've been recovering a little each day, i kid you not, nothing worked for years until i came across this shot in the dark. it took two years for it to come on and it will take two years to go away, I'm hallway through and recovering everyday. good luck to you all
Hi, I know this is a fairly old feed, but I've been of accutane for about 4 years and i still constantly suffer from joint pain. I'm currently 20 years old. I starting taking accutane when I was 15 and finished up when I was 16. I struggled when I was on it; I never imagined I'd feel like this 4 years after. I'm 5'7, 115lbs, extremely active (until my joint pain kicks in), I'm a vegetarian and take care of myself to the fullest extent. However, after my workday, my hands hurt and throb so badly, knees feel weak, back aches and feels stiff, my wrists are limp, my neck is tired, and I hardly have the strength to walk up the stairs. Suggestions?
Hi Sheryl. A lot of us are in the same boat with you. Umm, well, there's only a handful of options. You could see doctors and go the pharmacology route. Could delve deeper and see physical therapists...Most of us tane sider's do trial and error with natural supplements. I can recommend some that I take on a daily basis, and that I've heard many tane siders mention, although I would tamper expectations down for a quick fix since they work gradually if at all.
The good news is I have been able to work through a lot of things muscular and some things joint related. I was able to traverse through shin splints, lower back pain, and tendonitis in some areas. So who knows, maybe the supplements have helped. But of course, I've also been combining them with daily stretching, exercise, massage, hot tub + cold tub, like most athletes with the same type of pain would do.
Word on the street is Hyaluronic Acid. I've taken it daily for about two years. It works as an antioxidant as well, so its worth the price, even if you don't notice any major joint relief. I get my chondroitin sulfate through some Shark Liver oil, which also contains alkylglycerols(spelling?) so again, another bonus.
I try to stay away from the Glucosamine products because I've actually had pancreas flare ups when trying those out. There are some new studies linking Glucosamine in large doses as doing more damage than good. Gotta stress to anyone reading this to stay within the RDA of supplements. taking more will NOT heal you faster. If you want to take biotin for your hair, skin, nails (girls, mainly) please stay under 500mcg. The stories I read about people taking 2000+ mcg, jeez...Just because they make it and sell it doesn't mean you should buy it. Always look up the RDA. Same goes with Vitamin E. 100IU is plenty.
Anyways, back to joints. I'm still battling with tendon issues in a few areas, but I am exercising at a relatively high level again, and I feel good more often than not. So, I can confidently recommend Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin sulfate. Vit C is crucial (of course).
I basically try to stay within this list ( ) as my very expensive daily supplement intake (ignore the amounts listed). Obviously, you can get most of what you need on that list daily through a multi vitamin or even just proper nutrition (I usually do a flinstones multi vit gummy, or an Ensure drink, green tea for flavonoids, bananas for potassium). However, the stuff you can't get from a multi or nutrition, I buy. But yea, just take it day by day, trial and error method as long you stay within the RDA, and watch how your body responds to things. Those are my suggestions. Peace.
I know this is old but I took accutane when I was 14/15 for acne and about a month or two i ended up in hospital with osteomyelitis in my spine, days later accutane was on the news about causing joint pains and I stopped taking them immediately..
Since then ive been diagnosed with migratory osteoarthritis I'm now 28 and have had it since..
The longest I've ever worked is a month and I have not had a job since then with my pain moving from joint to joint, I can't even really play or chase my 2 year old nephew around..
I know I'm young but I feel as if I'm in my 60s.
