Brad you are an idiot i'm sorry. The reason why we know we have something other than MPB is two fold. Most of us experience hairloss elsewhere on the body, and we have diffuse hairloss across the entire scalp. In mpb you rarely if ever get hairloss outside of the male pattern regions.
The hairloss is DIFFUSE ALOPECIA AREATA, AN IMMUNE DISORDER. Look at all of accutanes other side effects and do some deep scientific research, they are all related to the immune system.
And yes there are plenty of things that help this accutane hairloss, again you just need to use your brain and do some reading.
The grapeseed, jojoba, emu etc helps regrow hair without the topical steroids yes.
Okay I understand...but I'm far from an idiot...ya hair won't go back to how it was no matter whatt...that's not been an idiot...that's a fact
That is also not true, alopecia areata is a non scarring form of hairloss, unlike Male pattern hairloss. The follicles may be subjected to miniturization whilst the underlying process is still active, however due to the non scarring nature of diffuse AA, if the process switches off ALL hair can regrow.
I used to be an active reader on this thread because I too had severe hairloss from accutane.
But, guess what? The hairloss stopped, and slowly but surely my hair has gone back to pre-tane!
After reading this horror story of a thread, I thought I was screwed. Starting to look at the possible hairloss treatments, I seen most had a worsening side effect before things got better which scarred me away. I kept myself extremely busy for a few months, and I started forgetting about my hairloss, and slowly but surely, my hairloss of 150-200+ hairs a day, just all of a sudden stopped.
It was weird though, because it seemed like it just stopped over night and my hair instantly looked thicker. A big reason I think was the stress of thinking about it. I was constantly running my hands through my hair trying to pull hair out to see if it was getting better, and I was only making the problem worse pulling 3-4 hairs out at a time.
I may be one of the lucky ones, or it was just a matter of time before my hair went back to normal, but I couldn't be happier about it.
PS. It took about 5-6 months post tane for the hairloss to stop, and about 8 months for my hair to look close to what it did pre-tane.
For those interested, I took 40mg/day for 6 months and started seeing hairloss in my 5th month. I was supposed to be on 80mg/day but I said fuck that!
It sounds like you had TE not diffuse AA. TE will suddenly resolve, i am guessing you never had any scalp sensations such as burning or itching? this is a sure sign that you had TE and not the AA.

(to max...karma eh?) lol sorery cudnt help it
Hey guys,
So I'm another lurker here on this thread and finally decided to post...
First, a little background...I am 32 years old, 5'9", and weigh 155 pounds. I have had moderate acne since my college years. I had my ups and downs in terms of severity, but usually nothing that over-the-counter stuff couldn't help with. In the past couple years though, it had gotten to the point where nothing I used seem to help. I bought and tried pretty much every single OTC acne treatment you can think of. Soooo much money down the drain.
At my low point, in early December 2008, I took a trip to the dermatologist -- my first trip ever. He took one look at my face (including a big cyst near my left eye) and suggested Accutane. I had already done research on it and was very taken aback by all the side effects, which I voiced to him. He understood, but also told me he had treated thousands of patients in 17 years of practice with great results. Since I had some doubts, though, he told me to think about it over the weekend and make up my mind.
After my bloodwork was cleared the following Monday, I decided to pick up the prescription, which was 40 mg/day. About three weeks into my treatment, I decided to do one pill every other day. The side effects were getting almost to much to bear -- most notably the severe dry eyes and dry lips, as well as patches of eczema. I also noticed my hair thinning (mainly on the top portion of my scalp), but it wasn't anything too crazy, so I decided just to keep an eye on it.
On my follow-up visit to my derm this January, we talked about how well the drug was working...at least on my skin. My bloodwork continued to be fine, but after voicing my concerns, he decided to take my dosage down to 20 mg/day. He said since side effects were directly related to how high the dosage was, I thought everything would get better...including the hair loss. Plus, my derm told me that the hair would almost certainly grow back, after noticing I had no scarring on my scalp.
Well, three days into taking 20 mg/day, my eyes and lips got a little better, but my hair started shedding like crazy on the top of my head. I stopped taking the pills (1/12 was the last day I popped one) and talked to my derm, who instructed me to stop taking Accutane and also get some Rogaine to jump-start the hair follicles.
I was hoping all of these side effects would die after a week or two, but the progress has been slow. I've heard that it takes from 10 days to about a month for Accutane to completely leave your system. My lips are almost back to normal, but my eyes are still very dry and red; I have to constantly put in eye drops during the day for them to look normal. My hair shedding has been cut to about half of what it was at it's worst, but it is still significant. I am afraid to touch my head at all now, lest I lose any more. I recently buzzed my hair off with clippers because it was looking so bad, and since it's so short all around the thinning on top isn't as noticeable. But if this shedding keeps up, I'm going to have no hair left on top.
After reading this board (thanks so much to the OG's, like lamarr, andy, etc.), I've taken some own measures to try and help every day, including:
- B-complex
- 5000 mg of Biotin
- 400 mg of Saw Palmetto
- 800 mg of Vit E
- 1000 mg of Vit D
- 1200 mg of Flaxseed
(I had taken Biotin, B-complex, Vit E, and Flaxseed during my Accutane course from the beginning, as advised by a lot of folks.)
I shampoo with Nizoral 2-3x a week (very dry scalp & dandruff was another annoying side effect), and also use an emu oil shampoo and conditioner. The Rogaine has increased shedding, I believe, but I'm not sure if all my shedding now is due to the Rogaine or is still due to the Accutane. I still get hairs with the dry sebum attached to the end falling out (including those weird ones with two hairs attached to one bulb), which is pretty depressing. Every morning and night, I mix a little jojoba and emu oil in my hands and then apply the Rogaine to the top of my scalp, massaging gently. Every time I do this, I lose about 10-15 hairs. I know this doesn't seem like a lot, but that's because I've already lost so much and I lose more than that every time I shower.
I'm really scared and upset right now, just because I seemed to be on a relatively low dosage and for only one month...but still had crazy hair loss. What's worse is that I just got out of a 2-year (on-and-off) relationship that has added to me being upset. And on top of that, I feel like I'm going bald, which is a huge blow to my self-confidence. The ironic thing that a lot of you have mentioned, is that my face looks pretty darn good right now with little acne, but the tradeoff has been the psychological effects of losing my hair. It's just as bad, if not worse. I've always been a popular guy, that apparently lots of people find very attractive, and I feel like all of that is going down the drain.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for posting their experiences, and I will keep updating things (good and bad) in the coming months.
tp30, those of us who have suffered from numerous long term side effects can tell you that you need to drop the flaxseed asap. You have to trust me on this one. When you drop the flax you may notice some of your sides improve in a short time period.
Wait it out for a good few months yet before taking further action.
Thanks for the advice lamarr. Curious, but why should I stop the flaxseed? I thought Omega fatty acids would do nothing but good for you in terms of Accutane side effects & dryness?
I also forgot to mention I'm taking zinc, 40-80 mg/day.
Btw, do you think it's safe for me to start taking my multivitamin again? I was going to wait over a month before I did that because I wanted to my body to get rid of all that excess Vitamin A. My doc told me it was safe to go on it immediately after stopping my Accutane treatment, but with the hair loss I wanted to stop it/slow it down as soon as possible.
Just took a shower, and there were lots of hairs on my hands when I shampoo'd and conditioned. I try not to think about it, but how can you not? Ugh...this really, really, gives a blow to your ego. I never want to go out anymore...and to think I was the same way cuz of my acne previously! Craptastic.
Lamarr, I took your advice and stopped taking the flaxseed three days ago. I haven't seen any change in my hair loss/shedding, but interestingly enough, my eyes have improved quite a bit. I'm not sure if it's just the timing (because my eyes had been slowly getting better the past week or so), but even so I had to use eye drops/artificial tears every hour or so to avoid redness and irritation. The past two days, I've only used the drops 4-5 times during the day...and they continue to get better. So I'll keep my fingers crossed.
It's a shame though, cuz I think all of us have read that Omega 3, 6, and 9 oils help with hair loss. Emu oil, for example, has some Omega's in it, which I'm applying topically.
I also bought some Grape Seed Extract (95% polyphenols) and will be taking 600 mg daily (half in the morning, and half at night). Oh, and I got some 100% pure aloe vera gel to use on my scalp/hair as well.
Will keep you all updated...
The omegas won't help any of us with tane hairloss, it may help normal male pattern hairloss but 99.9% of tane victims aren't suffering from this....
You are doing the right thing with the emu, aloe etc. Grape seed can be the answer for some people.
You should notice improvement in things since stopping the omegas, hopefully we got you off them soon enough to prevent further damage!!
I think you should be ok.
I just went back for my 1 year follow up post tane. Looks like I am just balding which kinda sucks. My derm is understanding to the issue still giving me shots, and am gonna go back in 3 months to see if they help at all. I have one question to pose to anyone who reads this.
Has anyone ever taken Propecia and if you did what were your results. I would be happy if the pill simply stopped the thinning on the crown portion. But I am horrifically frightened of the side effects only 26 don't need to worry about impotence or anything else. Has anyone experienced these at all, or if you have taken the drug what were your results of regrowth or stopping shedding?
Any help will be appreciated, I am not married yet, and wanted my pictures to have me with hair in them.

Are you sure you are balding?Sounds to me like your derm is just trying to get the easy way out.Are you shedding any where else other then your head?If so then your definitely not balding.
Also I wouldn't take propecia in a million years after my experience with accutane.Seriously as bad as hairloss is, impotence kills it by a long shot.
The loss began when I was on tane, did a total of 6 months have been clear ever since. During course had normal shedding reported by users on this board, lost prolly around 20% of total density. Once my course had ended I noticed that I continued to lose from my crown area and my hairline has receded as well. Not extremely bad but enough that I could see a small scar which has always been covered by hair.
I just now passed 1 year without any accutane and even my derm mentions how much thinner I was in the crown area since my last visit. She has my best interests is sight, but the side effects of propecia are too scary even if they are rare. I will continue with the steroid shots and hope it improve or helps me hang on to some hair, but if it gets really bad I will have to pursue another option.
The only evidence I have that it is not mpb is that my brother is 30 has a full head of hair and my grandfather on my mothers side died with a full head of hair thick and black.

Hey everyone, I'm new here but it seems like this is the most active thread on this topic so I was hoping you guys might be able to help. A little background... I took the tane about 10 years ago and am only now making the connection to hair loss. I had a very full head of hair before my course of 40mg/80mg every other day for 6 months when I was 16, and didn't really become concerned about my hair for a couple years after. I do however remember a LOT of scalp itching and shedding in retrospect. My hairline and top were most affected. When I decided to grow my hair out in college, I noticed a difference in texture and I had curly hairs on the bottom half of my hair around the ears. Also, achieving length was very difficult as hairs just wouldn't make it that long before falling out. I do have some history of mpb in my family, but not very early or severe. I began obsessing over my hair and started really keeping track of it at this point. I was losing a lot of hair in the shower, and every time I ran my hand through my hair a couple would fall out. This was 6 years post tane, and I made no connection. My mom is a doctor, and prescribed me finasteride and I began using minox as well. The fin I have been on the last 3 years, but I have only used minox sporadically, with a bit more consistency in the last year, usually only at night though. These seem to have helped a bit, but not much. I think the minox when used more constantly helps.
So here is the deal. I have also had this intense itching anywhere I have hair, from time to time on my scalp, but most notably on my arms and legs. It seems to flare up in one or two spots at a time, and sometimes I can clearly see that my hair follicles turn bright red, while the surrounding area turns kinda pink. I read a little of the theory behind tane induced diffuse AA, and it finally clicked. My mom, though very understanding and receptive, is not just going to throw steroids at me, and is very concerned that they, like the tane, will lead to worse side effects.
My questions are these:
Given my situation and time post tane, is there any hope for regrowth with the use of steroids?
If so what are the different options? And what are the safest?
Would an oral steroid help with my intense chronic itching all over?
Are there any other things I should try?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I will continue with the steroid shots and hope it improve or helps me hang on to some hair, but if it gets really bad I will have to pursue another option.
I feel that there is a need for me to warn you regarding steriod injection. Steriod injection can thin out your scalp and make things worse so I feel that you should reconsider if you should continues this option. If you really want to (even though I don't agree with it) then maybe you would like to try out what lamarr has been doing, which is applying topical steriod solution once daily.

Max whats wrong with what lamaar is doing?I understand there are certain risk and dangers associated with steroid injections but what about the cream?
I would think that this is a future option for me considering its working for lamaar.I don't know about your friend but the reality of losing all my head and eyebrow hair is very real so I will have to look into that.
Edit-Just read some stuff on steroids.I got to agree with max, steroids is not to be a long term solution unless you know the full risk associated with its use considering it could turn out like another blessing in disguise(accutane).
Jp-How bad is the itching that you are descrbing?
Hi skylit,
There is no right or wrong here. Mark might be right at the end of the day, so who knows? As for me, I will stick to my belief.
I understand but the fact is using steroids for the rest of your life will eventually lead to something or another.I thought that snice it is a cream that the risk involved were miniscule at best....Apparently I was wrong considering all the possible side effects.
What an ultimatum some of us are left with, lose hair or steroids
Funny thing is my other accutane side effect is actually getting better(tinnitus) with each passing day it seems.
Jp-How bad is the itching that you are descrbing?
It comes and goes, but is very intense when active. I have scratched till raw on numerous occasions. The funny thing is that it usually pops up in several places at once, and affects basically every part of my body except my back, where I don't have hair? My scalp itches too, but hasn't been intense like the rest of my body for several years. It was definitely the worst in the beginning though.
Do you think that a hair transplant is an option for those whose hair stopped shedding excessively but never grew back? Three years ago I started losing hair from taking excessive amounts of Vitamin A in the same way that people lose hair from accutane. My hair line hasn't changed, just diffuse loss throughout the front of my head. My hair shedding was really bad in the first year or so and gradually slowed down and now I only notice 10-20 hairs lost in the shower. The hair that I did lose never grew back and I am seriously considering getting a hair transplant to fill in the hair and add density. The hair on the back and sides of my head is as thick as can be so I have a good donor area. I just lost hair on the top. I have spoken to a surgeon who said that I would make a good candidate for hair transplant. I explained the situation to the surgeon about the vitamin a, he agreed that too much vitamin a is toxic but hadn't done a transplant on someone who lost hair from it. He assured me that there would be no problems with the transplant because the donor hair is healthy and was unaffected. If all goes as planned, I would have scalp coverage throughout my head again with 1 surgery (I realize I will lose hair in the future and that will need to be dealt with). In all of the message board posts I have read about accutane hair loss, I haven't found any information on whether a hair transplant could repair some of the damage. Most of my hair is alright, but there is an area about the size of my hand running down the center of my head that is incredibly thin and you can clearly see my scalp. I am just wondering if anyone knows anything about the effectiveness of a hair transplant for this type of hair loss. It seems like after enough time, most people's hair loss stabilizes but the hair that was lost doesn't come back. Hair transplants seem like the only way to replace the hair that was lost. I know it seems extreme, but there are so many posts from people who report 10 years later that their hair never grew back and I would like to do something about it besides waiting and hoping for the best. It seems like most of you here know more than most doctors about this subject so any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Rotawee I don't think this is the best place for questions about hair transplant as I don't think any of us has had one but I'll try to answer with the best of my abilities.
For starters it seems like your hair loss is not as bad considering the hairline is still fine and stableafter such a long time so maybe you should look into other options before taking the surgical route.Have you tried rogaine or any other type of treatments yet?
I've heard many horrors stories about people having unsuccessful treatment leaving them with little results and a head full of scars and this is natural balding.Considering our hairloss is affected by accutane and who knows what other effects it could of caused, I would tell you to live with it.
Lastly I read alot of stories of people trying different methods for hairloss like propecia only to end up with even worst side effects.Alot of them wish that there life was normal and that they come to a point where hairloss is the last thing on their mind.
I got on propecia as soon as I noticed the hair loss. I took it for 6 months but it didn't really change anything and I was still shedding like crazy. Last spring I started using rogaine and used it till about November but that didn't help, I think it actually made it worse. From reading the posts on here and other message boards it just seems like there is a very small chance that the hair will grow back on its own. The surgery is expensive but I would gladly pay to repair the damage and stop stressing about the hair not growing back. I have searched every message board relating to both accutane hair loss and hair transplants and I couldn't find any examples of people who got a hair transplant after losing hair from accutane. All the messages from people 5,10,15 years later who never grow hair back are making me seriously consider getting the surgery.
