went to see a naturpath he gave some kind of oils, to put on my hair at night, a natural soap to wash it out in the morning then i got to use coconut oil or mustard oil. in the day and wash it out at night. So I got to wash my hair twice a day. It's shedding a lot more, but he said that's the weak hair coming out it will grow back. urhh Risky! I have awesome wavy hair hate to lose it.
Anyways here's my theory on why accutane sheds your hair. Don't shoot me on it.
Accutane is a drug that drys out your system. So basically it disrupts the blood circulation that's suppose to go to the hair and give it the nutrients. Your hair drys out and starves of nutrients and then dies off because the blood aint flowing up their. So when you stop accutane your body starts recovering and it pushes out the dead dying hair and new hair if your lucky because the blood is flowing again. But for some people the hair is to damaged and can't grow back or if it does it's smaller and finer.
I'm also going to pray it out I know way to much people that have miracle healings of some sort or supernatural experience. I've also heard (don't know anyone personally) that people who were bald get back their hair through God glory. (CAN'T HURT TO PRAY)
Arc, your theory doesnt sound too bad, sounds it could be a factor, I dont know abotu that second one could've been those bald people were just suffering from TE and grew back. but either way, im using VITAMIN E because its a VITAMIN A regulator and it repairs wounds and other damages, so if accutane cause damages hopefully vitamin e would do its part also its good for your skin and i have a bit of acne now again so im tryin it, i tried b5and it works perfect but drys my hair and it starts to fall out alot. so i dont use it as much.
Arc, I don't agree with it. I believe that all severe side effects that are caused by accutane was because accutane alter our immune system and this lead our own immune system to attack us.
Of cos I hope that what you say is true, because if that is the case then there may be hope for people like us who are going through hell.
All those unnatural ways to grow hair with harsh chemicals and by plugging in hair transplants are earning huge corporations billions of dollars and doctors hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
Why would they be foolish enough to promote something that would cost you less than $15 in grocery store stuff that are able to naturally regrow your lost hair ?
Side Effects Of Common Drugs For Hair Loss Treatment :
Minoxidil : Cause a fall in blood pressure, an increase in the heart rate, and weight gain (fluid retention)
Propecia : May cause birth defects in male baby's sex organs if taken by women. Also, potentially irreversible side effects occurring in the group of people taking the drug are erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorder (decreased volume of ejaculate) and low libido.
How To Re-grow Your Lost Hair Safely :
A natural approach is consider a more safer way of re-growing lost hair compared to those unnatural ways that may involve harsh chemicals which may cause serious side effects.
If you are interested in re-growing your lost hair naturally, I would highly recommend this very informative and step and step guide from
If you want to keep your hair in a very decent condition for a long time and your suffering from tane hairloss after years. You need to use a topical steroid and combine this with minoxidil and laser therapy (not the combs).
The topical steroid will not thin your skin like blazed says. He had intradermal kenalog shots aswell as applying steroids at the same time.... He was also applying them twice per day.
Apply them just once. Use minoxidil if you can and lasers (you need a system with atleast 100 lasers.)

I DEFINITELy started losing my hair immediately after taking the accutane treatment (which I took when I was 15) struggled with hair loss resulting from the accutane for 4 1/2 years after that tried Rogaine, which didn't do much.
FINALLY, when I was a freshman in college and my hairloss was getting EXCESSIVELY WORSE, I went and saw a Physician/doctor who specializes in diets. He put me on:
*SAW PALMETTO EXTRACT, a good multivitamin, grapenol extract, fish oil pills, and *ADRENAL SUPPLEMENTS phytisone (the * ones are the supplements that I think are most responsible for regrowth)
I have experienced results like NO OTHER! I have been on this combination of supplements for about 4 1/2 months and I am almost back to a normal looking hairline! And before this, my hairline had been about 40% lost
I know now FOR SURE that at least SOME Accutane hair-loss sufferers out there can regrow at LEAST SOME of their hair, so I'm just praying that it continues the way it has been.
So another option is to try talking to a physician about those two supplements in particular:
SAW PALMETTO extract, PHYTISONE Adrenal Supplements (Thorne is the company that makes mine)
in addition to:
Fish Oil extract pills, a good multivitamin, zinc vitamin, grapenol extract
Especially for those without MPB (which my family never gets until their late 50s), this might be a combination to at least try for 6 months.
Read this from another doctor forum. Anyone taken this supplement "phytisone"?
Hey guys -
I took accutane for 18 days @40mg and stopped when I noticed my hair shedding and reading some messageboards. It has now been 7 weeks since I stopped and my hair is still shedding the same amount (I'd say 150 - 200 hairs a day). I thought this would just subside but it hasn't. In the last few weeks I've also developed facial flushing and blushing below my eyes and random itching/burning all over my body, but especially on my scalp. It feels like its almost darting from one spot on my body to the next. It comes and goes but is rather persistent. I'm pretty sure I'm shedding body hair from the amount I find in my sheets, but I haven't seen any splotches or drastic enough effects on body hair to be sure. It seems like this is an immune response and not TE from the itching and burning and short timeframe. Dolph I know you told me you recovered after losing hair from only taking tane for less than two months - did you lose body hair? and did you have persistent itching and burning or scalp inflammation?
My derm has given me a blood test and doesn't really know what it is, he thinks I should just give it time for the effects to wear off. I just started taking Grape seed and have been on Vit E, B complex and Biotin for a few weeks now. I'm getting kind of desperate b/c I really don't have anymore hair to lose - Do you guys have any advice? Should I try and wait out the shedding before I use minoxidil? What would be the downside? This blows.
Thanks
Cavan
Hi cmerski,
You are going through what most of us in this thread are going through in terms of scalp inflammation like scalp itching and burning. I have been waiting for it to wear off for 9 months now but it still persist albeit it doesn't shed as much as before but the scalp itching has been very persistant even untill now. All I can say is, give it 2 years and see if it wear off, if not then we might have to accept that this is a permanent problem. By the way, I was on 20mg for 4 1/2 months.
I was thinking that this could be a result from accutane being an immunosuppressant that triggers an autoimmune response. Hence, when you stop taking it, you're immune system is no longer suppressed, so the autoimmune reaction is exacerbated. This would explain the drastic increase in hair loss and irritation AFTER suspension of treatment.
Phan, what do you recommend for the SAW PALMETTO extract, PHYTISONE Adrenal Supplements what dosages? im planning to go on this, after you said that you have such good results with it. And i googled it up and it doesnt look so expesnive. where do you get them from online? thanks.
Oh thanks for clearing that up for me. I am going to go on these supplements to see if it helps. I think everyone should try the aloe vera on their hair 1 or 2 times a week, it really does help alot. It helps with the regrowth. but imma give these a shot to see if it helps more.
Mikey,
Just want to give you a heads up on the PHYTISONE Adrenal Supplements by thorne.
I read the ingredients and it has some biotin in it.
I dunno if you have ever taken biotin supplements but last time I took some biotin supplements 5mg daily for 2 months. My face and back was breaking out after 4-6 weeks. The good thing was it went away after I stopped taking the biotin supplements.
So if you're going to try the phytisone I suggest you take very low dosage.
Just report back to us in a month and see how its working out. We're counting on you mikey =)
I am pretty sure that Andy and Rudolph hair loss had already recovered, else both of them will "Definitely " come back to this thread.
Anyway phan23, I would like to know if you still experience scalp itching after almost 3 years of hair loss and are there any sign that the hair loss is beginning to recover?
hey guys,
I am in the same boat of hair loss as you. This is my second round of Accutane. First being 3 yrs back, and that hit my temples & hair line badly. I started using Minoxidil since then and my hair loss is not so bad now. I generally have quite dense hair but because of my broad forehead my hair line isn't very good.
Temples are the toughest part to get your hair back. Although I ve been using Minoxidil for the past 2+ years now but I haven't seen much improvement on the temples area.
Now on my 2nd week of Accutane, my hair fall has increased all over again. I am taking zinc tablets 15mg/day + regular Minoxidil.
I am worried that by the time I finish with this course it might effect my hair quite severely.
What do you guys think? Should I add anything to my supplementary diet?
TC.
Max,
My scalp itches from time to time but it never really bothered me that much.
I just massage my head with my finger tips and most of the time it reliefs the itching.
Recently I've tried the Aloe Vera that mikey suggested and it really moisturized my scalp and stops the itching. You should definitely try it.
The only good news I have after 2-3 years =/ i stopped counting. Anyways my shedding has stopped. The only time I see hair is when I'm taking a shower and there's like 10-20 strands. The bad news is I don't think my hair is growing back. Seems like the reason I'm shedding less is because theres less hair to shed... if that makes sense.
Hey Pity,
Have you been taking Zinc fand Minoxidil for the last 3 years? Did it help maintain your hair?
Pity26,
I don't understand why you went on accutane again since you had already experience hair loss during your first course which has yet to recover. I feel that you are playing with fire and put yourself at risk of severe hair loss this time round. I hope you don't experience scalp inflammation because it can be very difficult to deal with.
Hi phan23,
Even though I definitely have some regrowth but I doubt we will have all our hair back like pre tane. I was wondering if your scalp oil is back like pre tane?
On the bright side, my eyebrows recover instantly (within 3 weeks) every time I experienced hair loss there.
Hi Max,
Yes I really don't think my hair will recover 100%. I'm just hoping to grow back to 70% of what I had before accutane. As of now I'm my hair is thin on top. from far away you can't tell but when I look into the mirror and look closely I could kinda see my scalp covered by very thin layer of hair. This summer I'm going to buzz cut my hair and take a picture to see how bad it is.
The oil on my scalp is pretty much back to normal. The only time my scalp is dry is right after I shampoo with baby shampoo.
Yeah the eyebrows might be one of the first thing that recover the quickiest.

Hi Max,
Thanks for your reply. Well this has made me a bit concerned. I am certainly experiencing some kind of scalp irritation for the last 3 days. Also my hair loss has increased as compared to pretane. Atleast Minoxidil is not letting it to cause too much of hair thinning, but everytime I shampoo I see around 100+ fall.
But the problem is there is no other drug which has worked for my acne. I have just completed my 2 weeks and skin is doing good already. But I defenetely don't want some kind of severe hair loss. Do you think if I bring down my dose to 20mg, it will help.
Suggestions!!
Thanks.

Hi Phan,
I have started Zinc only for the past 2 weeks with Accutane. But Minoxidil I've been using for the past 3 yrs. I've not used it very regularly, more ON and OFF kinds. But it does help in maintaining the hair. My hair problem is more towards temples and hair line area which is the most difficult to recover. But at least it is not letting it go worse.
BTW in which form you are using Aloe Vera, within the shampoo or what...?
TC.
Hi pity26,
It will definitely help if you lower your dose to 10mg, if not, then 20mg should be fine. Just don't go on those crazy dose like 60mg to 120mg. Even if those dose don't kill you, it can alter your immune system and cause you all kinds of auto immune disorders (if unlucky) which most of the time is for life.
Hi phan23, thanks for the replied. I totally appreciate it.
