"I'm pretty certain this is how a typical TE from accutane will work. It also fits in with what Andys derm said, e.g. 6-8 months for shedding to stop in MOST cases"

I've been shedding for around 10 months so far. I pretty much shed throughout most of my treatment on accutane but it was minimal up until december when the massive shedding ensued. As of now it's been a total of 10 months, two shedding on the tane, and another 8 off of it. I know something is really wrong not so much even based anymore of the fact of how many hairs I shed but more because of the extreme wirery and crazy texture of my hair. In my opinion my hair follicles have been permanetly damaged and thus the shedding will never really subside. I am destined I think to be very much bald in the future i guess, i dunno depressing. every now and then for a period of a couple of weeks the shedding will calm down a bit, but always picks back up, it's weird. but yea 10 months here and still no real signs of slowing up. i've lost 50-60% of the hair i once had.

The texture thing is very strange mate i know that. All i am saying is that i hope for you that the shedding subsides even more in the next two months, as i believe up to 1 year off of tane is required to see whether permanent damage has been done... Even then i still think you have a chance of it subsideing even further!!

I don't think you should take the propecia. But would you be willing to look into topical Anti-Dhts and minox?

I know that in my case, my shedding is due either to typical telogen effluvium, and/or (and this is quoteing the top derm in this country) a Hypersensitivity reaction within my small/medium blood vessels. I think me and you are different cases though, but i do believe minox is a big help in many accutane hairloss victims... due to the vasodialation that minox causes, due to a release in nitric oxide.

he just laughed, he told me to go on rogaine to jump start the hair follicles back, my derm gave me minoxidyll which is the same thing, so that's that.

None blazed.... I am taking/using enough things to combat other side effects atm *sigh* I'm on clonidine for flushing, a topical anti biotics for foliculitus. But i take supplements e.g. brewers yeast...

I will leave it another few months then will probably hit the minoxidil, i feel it will probably help alot in my case...

One thing that I find interesting is that in the past there was never a thread longer than a page or two about hair loss. Now there is a bunch of us who took accutane at relatively the same time and all experienced hair loss issues and have combined to create a thread that is 57 pages and growing!

i am so glad that i found these message boards and this thread. I felt so alone and scared when i started losing my hair and it makes me feel so much better to know that i am not the only one going through this. this thread had helped to much to reduce my anxiety about the whole situation. i am so thankful!!

Saw Dr Chu again today, he told me he thinks my hairloss SHOULD resolve but doesn't say it will for certain. He said he has seen accutane trigger DIFFUSE alopecia arearta (SP)....Most of you need not worry about that though...

why must we not worry about alopecia arearta? is it rare in accutane?

Yes, i think one person so far in this whole thread has/is likely to have alopecia arearta and that is julius...

Alopecia arearta can often be improved with minoxidil btw...

This article is mainly for blaze... These pictures are of typical alopecia arearta. But i presume the treatement will be the same for diffused AA. Look at the treatement used.... You posted how one guy had full recovery from the use of xandrox (which containts 12.5-15% minox and azelic acid). Have a read of the article...

thanks for the link. is there anyway to tell the difference between diffuse alopeica areata and other diffuse thinning from tane?

I have been thinking the same, only thing i can think of is a biopsy performed by a derm or tricologist... I will probably be trying to get one done over the next few months. If inflamation is found (outside of MPB areas) then i would say alopecia arearta is a possibility...

Again for your blazed, as i know you have been suffering from and itchy inflammed scalp? if i remember correctly. i stumbled across this in my never ending quest to gain knowledge on the subject of hairloss...

"There is an article by Hoss in the March 1998 issue of Archives of Dermatology, which describes "Scalp Dysesthesia". Some individuals who develop a telogen effluvium report painful burning sensations in association with excessive shedding of the hair. Until recently this problem was not officially identified by dermatologists. The syndrome has been called "scalp dysesthesia" or "burning scalp syndrome". The cause of burning scalp syndrome is unknown. Some dermatologists have successfully treated it with antidepressants such as doxepin or amytryptaline.

Shedding of dead skins of the scalp, maybe ? I'm facing this problem too .. but my hair loss is not that big deal , but I notice that the quality of my hair has decreased all too greatly , it is now coarse and brittle , easily comes out and really coarse.

Yes i experience exactly the same, the white bulb on the end is supposedly dried out sebum, but i don't know about that.... Nizoral is known to induce an intense itch in some people, so please ensure you aren't over using it!! i now only use nizoral twice a week at the most... Althernate it with something like head and shoulders classic. The active ingredient in nizoral continues to work for a few days afterwards...
