One thing that I find interesting is that despite the amount of hair that I have shed, my hair still doesn't look too much thinner. Maybe this is due to the type of hair that I have (wavy when short but curly when long) or the fact that I haven't got it cut in a while. Maybe this also means I'm having good regrowth, although I don't see small hairs on my head sticking up, I seem to be losing a lot of small tapered hairs lately. I don't know if I should be happy that a lot of hair is growing back or upset because of the extremely short anagen cycle.
If you really do have a short anagen cycle, this should correct over time, assuming you don't have MPB.
You should be happy. In my (amateur) opinion, shedding short hairs means that the hair follicle is getting back to normal.
Andy- if it was mpb the short hairs would appear finer rather than normal thickness, correct?
If you're older than 22-years-old - like I am - then yes, MPB would involve short hairs that are finer than usual. But if you're younger than that, then you might still have MPB, regardless of the thickness of the hair.
Then again, if the hairs aren't fine, you are far away from showing showing MPB, if you have it at all. In short, thick short hairs are a good sign, in my opinion.
Im certain with the amount of hair im loosing/regrowing im not showing any signs of mpb, although i have been reading about what is known as a matureing hairline, which is probably what i now have lol, it isn't so much my temples have receeded in the typical mpb way, but my whole hairline has gone back slightly...i still see alot of hairs all along the hairline.

Do you mean look or feel mate? because mine still looks pretty normal, it just feels ultra thin compared to what it was...
lamarr- its hard to tell if my hair feels any thinner because I have never grown it out this long, but overall I would say it doesn't feel that much longer.
andy- why do you say that shedding these shorter tapered hairs is a sign of the follicle coming back to normal?
*i meant to say it doesn't feel that much thinner, not longer

Well, there are two scenarios:
1. The short hairs mean that you are in fact regrowing hair. Not for very long, but at least hair is growing. And as I said before, when affected follicles reactivate, they don't reactivate fully all at once. Shedding those short hairs means you're closer to a more normally functioning hair follicle.
2. The hair follicle is miniaturizing and producing hairs with a shorter anagen phase. Hence you're losing, not gaining, more hair.
But scenario 2 is unlikely, since you don't notice more lost hair. Your hair remains as thick as it was at least at the beginning of the telogen effluvium. So it must be scenario 1, which is good.
I hope that makes sense.
Well i have lost about 60% of my hair believe it or not, it has become ridiculous over the past month, i don't hold out much hope at all... the thinning is even throughout my scalp and i have alot of regrowth it just cannot keep up with the massive amounts of shedding... i just want my shedding to slow down consderably and that would allow it to grow back in a bit more (my hair did this at the 2 month mark) i have now been shedding for 5 months and im over 6 months post accutane, wonderfull, wonderfull...

Mark,
Are you only shedding short hairs now? Or both short and long?
hey guys, i've been reading all the stories, still we haven't gotten good enough results. Me either I've been off accutane for about 5-6 months, I know i've said longer before but i started to count from the 2 moth period accutane is out of your body well what i've heard was about 2 months so from then it would be april, i still lose hair in the shower my hair is thick in diameter and very black, i dont have those small hairs thin hairs everyone talks about. the good thing is that all around my hair has thined not just da mpb areas so i can push aside mpb right now, what i have heard and im lookin up on this extensively because it seems promising, is HGH(human growth hormone)
"is a protein hormone which stimulates growth and cell reproduction in humans"
I have read in a few places it helps with hair loss and helps rejuvinate cells.
I hope you guys can help me research this HGH more to find out if it can help us or not.
i'll post more info as soon as i am done researching.

Both, but some days it feels more predominently short hairs...

Yeah HGH is probably one of the safest options for us in reality, the pituitry gland doesn't become supressed from the use of it (at reasonable levels) i can get hold of it but it is costly, about A10 ($20) a day. The way body builders use it is for 5 days then take two days off. It does require daily injections though....
But yeah it could help with the damage done to our bodies and is pretty safe at reasonable doses...

You're going to want to punch me in the face after I say this, but, hey, join the club. I made a mistake on everyone's diagrams. I forgot to take into account the shedding of the first regrowth. Mark, see your new diagram here: [Edited link out]
If I'm right, you should have shed for about 4 months, then it would have slowed down for about a month, and now you will shed for an additional 2 months. For a total of 7 months of shedding. The second shed would be mostly short hairs.
lol i don't mind mate, i don't expect it to ever stop so if it has a chance of stopping after 7 months then great...
The only time it has really slowed down is after the first two months of shedding, it really slowed down and thickened up then. But as you know my doseing isn't 100% accurate. I have been shedding for 5 months now and am 6 months post...

I think you're going to make a full recovery.
I'd be very suprised mate, obviously very happy aswell, when i think back im really not surpised all of this is happening, i was under so much stress and it really messed with my system (accutane that is)!!
From reading many articles some people have a longer telogen length than 3 months, hence why the shedding can begin 1-6 months after the trigger...
If we go by that it is easy to understand why on a 6 month course for instance the shedding can go on for up to 12-13 months, and with a 4 month course 10-11 months....
The only positive thing i can look at is the fact that i really do believe im not going through mpb, my hairline has just gone back like jades due to the sheer mass of hair i have been loosing...

can you do mine again?
i'm at about 7 months at this point. i've noticed that my hair loss depends on the day i wash my hair. if i wash it after two days i get 20ish hairs, if i wait 4 i'll get 40ish and so on. (i still lose more in the comb, etc, though) i know my shedding slowed down after my 4th or 5th month, so it's possible that i'm not losing enough to make a difference at this point, but it'd still l ike to feel for sure it's stopped.

David,
See your updated diagram here: [Edited link out]
The new red lines extend your shedding. When the lines overlap, that should be heavier shedding than usual. So, now, the diagram predicts you'll shed for a total of 7 months after the first shed. But the additional sheds will be very light. And regrowth is on the way.
Hi guys,
Just an update regarding my blood test results. I've been doing a lot of research and I have a couple of theories that I'm going to try out.
Basically everything came back normal with a couple of exceptions which I feel my doctor is overlooking. My MCV/MCH levels in my blood count are always high, especially MCV which signals a b 12 deficiency. It is always just above the limit (80-97 normal mine was 104). And when I looked back at my blood work while on accutane it was always the same. The doc have never paid much attention. My doc did agree to test my folate and b12 levels which I'll get next week. I looked up b12 deficiency and it seems I have a lot of the symptoms - trouble sleeping, fatigue, frequent yeast infections, mild depression (which i thought was from the hair loss) and HAIR LOSS!
Another result was with my DHEA S being low (both men and women have this hormone). For my age it is supposed to be under 7.3, but mine is extremely low at 2.2. (it even said review result on the test but my doc ignored it). When I researched this it means that I could have adrenal fatigue (as I do have a lot of the symptoms including unexplained HAIR LOSS). We do lose dheas as we age but for my age mine should not be nearly as low. I will need to do a cortisol test to check for this which I'm going to have her check next week.
Basically, I think this is all happening due to accutane. Since before accutane, I never had any problems and have no history of hair loss in my family including the male side. As I eat a very balanced diet (meat, dairy etc) there is no reason at my age I should have low b12 stores in my body. I exercise and take ridiculous good care of myself (esp sice the hair loss started) and neither has there been severe stress in my life to account for adrenal fatigue. The rest of my hormones including thyroid were normal, so it doesn't make sense. Apparently, one's b12 stores take a long time develop and is stored in the liver and accutane does affect the liver. All this time, I've been thinking that the accutane just has to work itself out of my body, but my doc swears that it is out of our systems within a month- so why the continued hair loss?
I think that it is possible based on my results that accutane may cause a deficiency in our bodies that could lead to b12 deficiency as well as possible adrenal fatigue (since they really don't know what accutane does to our body). I think I'm going to get my doc to start me on weekly b12 shots (which can't hurt me anyway) and at the very least will lower my MCV level. And who knows, maybe it will slow or stop my hair loss?!
I know I'm the only girl posting on here, but it is possible that accutane has caused similar deficiencies in all of us. Perhaps the people who eventually have their hair grow back have been able to regain their b12 in their bodies. I was on accutane for a long time, so I'm thinking it could be a possibility in my case.
Still losing silly amounts of hair daily.
Jade
Just rang my Drs, ANA = Normal... the saga continues lol. My dad will be paying for an ANCA test, i feel this may hold the key for a number of us accutane victims...
Good to hear about the ANA test! I'm sure the ANCA one will be normal as well.
whenever i get normal blood results back it's more of a double edged sword. It's good that their normal, but at the same time no one has a clue as to what the hell is wrong with me. I agree with jade that I think the accutane propecia combo gave me adrenal fatigue, and i have some of the classic symptoms of it. As of right now I am still shedding constantly and my hair is looking worse and worse by the day. I am trying to see an endocrinologist asap so ill keep you guys posted.
I feel the same ithappens, no1 can give me any answers. I am seeing a vasculitus specialist (friend of my dads) soon hopefully. I have different symptoms from you guys but i feel me going on two strong antibiotics 5 weeks after accutane (my hairloss began whilst on those) didn't help my situation. My hairloss is definenelty not just your standard TE and i just hope my body can correct itself. I have been talking with a few drs and they think a course of oral steroids may help MY case...

lamarr i agree. It seems that alot of the symptoms that we all have are very similar to that of people with auto-immune diseases such as lupus and hypothyroidism. I'm going to a thyroid specialist soon and I hope he can give me some answers. I already had a standard test and it came back normal, but I know there's got to be something else wrong and other tests they can give me.
Yup and im not gonna stop until i get some answers. I have a very interesting bruise that has appeared from no where on my back, i shall post a pic but people will probably say ive just knocked myself, i can assure anyone who thinks that, that this bruise appeared over night and i did nothing to cause it... i am becoming more and more convinced i have some form of vasculitus.
Ithappens, there is a link between the adrenal glands and cortisone, as i'm sure your aware, maybe our bodies don't produce enough (atleast in my case) and in hairloss cases where inflamation is apparent.
"Corticosteroid medicines are derivatives of the natural corticosteroid hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands. These have many important functions in the body, including control of inflammatory responses."
